In patients with obstructive apnea, it was hypothesized that stimulation of the ventilatory system by hypercapnia during sleep would increase pharyngeal inspiratory muscle activity and thereby increase upper airway caliber. We predicted that this increase in caliber would decrease the number of apneas and sleep time spent apneic. A retrospective study of 50 patients with circulatory shock and serial hemodynamic and metabolic measurements was undertaken. The purpose of this study was to determine the consequence of intermittent mandatory ventilation (IMV) on gas exchange, cardiac function, and blood oxygenation immediately after cardiopulmonary bypass grafting. The incidence of hypoxemia in the immediate postoperative period was determined using a pulse oximeter for continuous monitoring of arterial oxygen saturation (SaO2) in 95 ASA class I or II adult patients breathing room air during their transfer from the operating room to the recovery room. Transcutaneous partial oxygen tension (tc pO2) and skin blood flow (via heat clearance) were measured noninvasively in 22 male subjects who performed stress-inducing tasks (i.e. hand-grip exercise, cold pressor test, breath holding, hyperventilation and mirror-tracing). We reviewed 22 patients with congenital diaphragmatic hernias in whom operative repair was undertaken within 24 hours of age, in the period between 1970 and 1981. Continuous intrapartum PO2 recordings were made in 25 fetuses, using a needle electrode that measures PO2 in the subcutaneous (sc) tissue of the scalp or the breech.
