Acetylcholinesterase Inhibition Reverses Age-Related Pulmonary Decline and Increases Bronchus-Associated Lymphoid Tissue Formation in Aged Mice.

Age-related chronic, low-grade inflammation, known as inflammaging, contributes to tissue damage and disease. In the lungs, inflammaging leads to abnormal tissue remodeling, reduced function, and decreased immunity. A key factor in inflammaging is declining acetylcholine signaling, which normally suppresses inflammation and promotes tissue repair. We tested whether increasing acetylcholine responsiveness could reverse age-related lung damage. Aged mice were treated with donepezil to increase acetylcholine availability. After six months, blood oxygen saturation and voluntary activity were signi

Photoacoustic/Ultrasonic Dual-Modality Imaging in the Differential Diagnosis of Subungual Tumors.

BACKGROUND: Subungual tumors present diagnostic challenges due to their concealed location and overlapping clinical features. Accurate non-invasive differentiation between benign and malignant lesions is crucial for treatment planning. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy of photoacoustic/ultrasound (PA/US) dual-modality imaging in distinguishing benign from malignant subungual tumors. METHODS: A total of 29 patients with subungual lesions (22 benign, 7 malignant) were prospectively enrolled. All underwent PA/US imaging using the Resona Y·PanGu system. Parameters including oxygen saturation (

Enhanced OSA Detection via Multi-Scale Modeling of EEG and ECG Signals.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a prevalent sleep disorder that has been linked to various serious health conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, metabolic disorders, and cognitive impairments. Early detection of OSA is crucial for preventing these associated health risks. Although significant progress has been made in the automatic detection of OSA, existing methods predominantly rely on single signals, such as electrocardiogram (ECG), blood oxygen saturation, Airflow, and mainly use one-dimensional networks for feature extraction, which fail to fully leverage the time-frequency chara

Daratumumab desensitization: Novel approaches in POEMS syndrome experience.

Daratumumab is a human IgG1κ monoclonal antibody targeting CD38, with infusion-related reactions occurring in 45-48% of patients. Among these, 5-10% are severe, requiring treatment discontinuation in 1% of cases. The incidence of hypersensitivity reactions (HSRs) to daratumumab is unknown. We describe a 37-year-old male diagnosed with POEMS syndrome and treated with autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation and chemotherapy. Presenting a relapse of the disease, intravenous daratumumab was initiated. Ten minutes after starting the first infusion, he presented with generalized rash, abd

Case report and literature review: Management of acute progressive hemothorax in pregnancy complicated by maternal pulmonary sequestration.

Pulmonary sequestration is a rare pulmonary malformation, typically characterized by asymptomatic presentation or recurrent pulmonary infections, with chest pain and hemothorax being exceedingly rare occurrences. The rupture and hemorrhage of maternal pulmonary sequestration during pregnancy pose a life-threatening condition that is challenging to diagnose. We present a case of a 37-year-old pregnant woman in her third trimester who presented with acute progressive hemothorax, a complication arising from maternal pulmonary sequestration. The patient experienced chest pain, which was followed b

Examining the association between sleep apnea and total hippocampal volumes in cognitive impairment.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of dementia is rising due to an aging population. Given the known risks of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) on cerebrovascular health, we hypothesized that markers of OSA would correlate with reduced hippocampal volumes in individuals with cognitive impairment due to neurodegenerative, vascular, or mixed (NVM) etiologies. METHODS: Data from 166 patients were retrospectively analyzed. Participants underwent polysomnography or home sleep apnea tests, alongside structural brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). They were categorized into cognitive impairment due to NVM

Mitochondrial mechanism of florfenicol-induced nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in zebrafish using multi-omics technology.

Florfenicol (FF), a third-generation chloramphenicol antibiotic widely used in food-producing animals, has become a "pseudopersistent" environmental contaminant, raising concerns about its potential ecological and human health impacts. However, its bioaccumulation behavior and hepatotoxic mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study aims to address these gaps with a 28-day exposure experiment in adult zebrafish at 0.05 and 0.5 mg/L FF. Multiomic analyses (metabolomics, lipidomics, and transcriptomics), combined with histological and mitochondrial function assessments, were employed. Higher

Bilateral Diaphragmatic Paresis Due to an Iatrogenic Injury of the Phrenic Nerve: A Case Report.

Bilateral diaphragmatic paresis is a rare entity with unknown incidence and is associated with severe respiratory dysfunction. In this case report we present a 69-year-old patient who sought emergency services due to dyspnea, orthopnea, and paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea. The patient denied other complaints and mentioned that these symptoms began after being discharged from a hospitalisation for emphysematous acute cholecystitis, where he underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy, which was complicated by extensive hemorrhage of the abdominal wall. On the physical examination, paradoxical breathing

Resuscitating the macro- vs. microcirculation in septic shock.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review summarizes current literature about the relationships between macro and microcirculation and their practical clinical implications in children with septic shock. RECENT FINDINGS: Current evidence from experimental and clinical observational studies in children and adults with septic shock reveals that the response to treatment and resuscitation is widely variable. Furthermore, there is a loss of hemodynamic coherence, as resuscitation-induced improvement in macrocirculation (systemic hemodynamic parameters) does not necessarily result in a parallel improvement i

[Tissue perfusion monitoring in children with acute circulatory dysfunction: narrative review].

Sepsis is one of the main causes of admission to Intensive Care Units (ICU). The hemodynamic objectives usually sought during the resuscitation of the patient in septic shock correspond to macrohemodynamic parameters (heart rate, blood pressure, central venous pressure). However, persistent alterations in microcirculation, despite the restoration of macrohemodynamic parameters, can cause organ failure. This dissociation between the macrocirculation and microcirculation originates the need to evaluate organ tissue perfusion, the most commonly used being urinary output, lactatemia, central venou

Deep learning and remote photoplethysmography powered advancements in contactless physiological measurement.

In recent decades, there has been ongoing development in the application of computer vision (CV) in the medical field. As conventional contact-based physiological measurement techniques often restrict a patient's mobility in the clinical environment, the ability to achieve continuous, comfortable and convenient monitoring is thus a topic of interest to researchers. One type of CV application is remote imaging photoplethysmography (rPPG), which can predict vital signs using a video or image. While contactless physiological measurement techniques have an excellent application prospect, the lack

Alteration of functional connectivity despite preserved cerebral oxygenation during acute hypoxia.

Resting state networks (RSN), which show the connectivity in the brain in the absence of any stimuli, are increasingly important to assess brain function. Here, we investigate the changes in RSN as well as the hemodynamic changes during acute, global hypoxia. Mice were imaged at different levels of oxygen (21, 12, 10 and 8%) over the course of 10 weeks, with hypoxia and normoxia acquisitions interspersed. Simultaneous GCaMP and intrinsic optical imaging allowed tracking of both neuronal and hemodynamic changes. During hypoxic conditions, we found a global increase of both HbO and HbR in the br
