Ethosuximide improves chronic pain-induced anxiety- and depression-like behaviors.

Chronic pain is a heavy burden disease. Current treatments are generally weakly effective or associated with adverse effects. New therapeutic approaches are therefore needed. Recent studies have suggested T-type calcium channels as an attractive target for the treatment of chronic pain. In this perspective, it was decided to perform a preclinical evaluation of the efficacy of ethosuximide, a T-type channel blocker used clinically as an antiepileptic, as a novel pharmacological treatment for chronic pain. Assessment of the effect of ethosuximide was thus made in both nociception and pain-relate

Blueberries Improve Pain, Gait Performance, and Inflammation in Individuals with Symptomatic Knee Osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint disorder in the world and is the most frequent cause of walking related disability among older adults in the US, which brings a significant economic burden and reduces quality of life. The initiation and development of OA typically involves degeneration or progressive loss of the structure and function of articular cartilage. Inflammation is one of the major drives of the progression of OA. Dietary polyphenols have been studied for their anti-inflammatory properties and potential anabolic effects on the cartilage cells. Blueberries are widely consum

[Minimally invasive, extrapleural-anterolateral approach to the spine].

In spine surgery, minimally invasive approaches (MIS) are getting accepted and more popular worldwide during the last decades. It is due to the reduced intraoperative blood loss, decreased infection rate, less postoperative pain and earlier discharge from hospital compared to traditional approaches. The present paper puts forward a minimally invasive extrapleural approach to the thoracic spine that is not applied in Hungary. This new approach, in contrast to the standard costotransversectomy, provides direct visual control over the ventral surface of the dural sac. Furthermore, contrary to the

Evaluation of Pain Syndromes, Headache, and Temporomandibular Joint Disorders in Children.

After a thorough review of the history and presentation of a child's facial pain, a targeted head and neck examination is critical to the appropriate diagnosis of facial pain and temporomandibular joint disorders. It is critical to distinguish between the structural (trauma, degenerative disease, and tumor) and nonstructural (neurogenic, myogenic, and psychological) causes of pain, which will allow for incorporation of appropriate strategies of medical, psychological, dental, and surgical therapies.

Effect of a single dose of meloxicam prior to band or knife castration in 1-wk-old beef calves: I. Acute pain.

In Western Canada, approximately half of the calves produced are castrated before 1 wk of age. Therefore, it is important to identify effective analgesic drugs to mitigate pain associated with castration and consequently improve animal welfare. The aim of this study was to assess the efficacy of a single s.c. dose of meloxicam at mitigating pain associated with knife and band castration in 1-wk-old calves. Seventy-two Angus crossbred bull calves (47.3 ± 6.70 kg of body weight (BW), 1 wk old) were used in a 3 × 2 factorial design where main factors included castration method-sham (CT), band (BA

Use of hyaluronidase as an adjunct to local anaesthetic eye blocks to reduce intraoperative pain in adults.

BACKGROUND: Hyaluronidase has been used over many decades as an adjunct to local anaesthetic solution to improve the speed of onset of eye blocks and to provide better akinesia and analgesia. With the evolution of modern eye surgery techniques, fast onset and akinesia are not essential requirements anymore. The assumption that the addition of hyaluronidase to local anaesthetic injections confers better analgesia for the patient needs to be examined. There has been no recent systematic review to provide evidence that hyaluronidase actually improves analgesia. OBJECTIVES: To ascertain if adding

Pre- and postoperative predictors of phantom limb pain.

Phantom limb (PLP) as well as residual limb pain (RLP) are still a very significant problem after amputation and their causes are only partially known. Here we tested whether the predisposition for the frequency, duration and intensity of PLP and RLP is shared with other prior chronic pains and/or the presence of postamputation subacute pain. A week preoperatively we collected data using validated questionnaires, a pain diary and interviews on past chronic pain conditions, acute pain, depression, anxiety, pain interference, life control, social support and affective distress and pain ratings o

The impact of intravenous acetaminophen on pain after abdominal surgery: a meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Pain after surgery is commonly controlled with opioid pain medications. A multi-modal pain strategy that involves acetaminophen may help minimize the negative consequences of opioids, such as ileus, respiratory depression, and addictive potential. There are limited data on the effectiveness of intravenous (IV) acetaminophen in comparison with other nonopioid pain medications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four databases were queried for the keywords "acetaminophen," "intravenous," and "postoperative". Prospective studies of adult patients receiving at least 24 h of IV acetaminophen after

Evaluation of the therapeutic effects of led (λ627 ± 10 nm) on the initial phase of ankle sprain treatment: a randomised placebo-controlled clinical trial.

Various therapies for the treatment of sprains have emerged as advances occur in biomedical engineering and photobiology. Therapy with coherent and non-coherent light is a treatment modality for various musculoskeletal injuries. The main certified phototherapy benefits are the reduction of nociceptive processes and the modulation of the inflammatory process, among others. The objective of this study was to analyse the changes caused by the use of light-emitting diodes (LED) (λ627 ± 10 nm) with an energy density of 10 J/cm2 in 40 subjects divided into two groups (20 placebo and 20 LED). Effects of laying on of hands with and without a spiritual context on pain and functionality of older women with knee osteoarthritis: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Laying on of hands (LooH) is a culturally-accepted therapy in several traditions. In Brazil, "Spiritism" (third-largest religious tradition in number of followers) uses LooH with the name of "Spiritist Passe" (SP). However, there are few studies assessing SP's role in medical outcomes. The present study aims to investigate the effects of LooH, with and without a spiritual context, on pain, joint stiffness, and functional capacity of older women (≥60 years old) with knee osteoarthritis (KOA). METHODS/DESIGN: In this triple-blind, prospective randomized controlled trial, older women

Trajectories of pain severity in juvenile idiopathic arthritis: results from the Research in Arthritis in Canadian Children Emphasizing Outcomes cohort.

We studied children enrolled within 90 days of juvenile idiopathic arthritis diagnosis in the Research in Arthritis in Canadian Children Emphasizing Outcomes (ReACCh-Out) prospective inception cohort to identify longitudinal trajectories of pain severity and features that may predict pain trajectory at diagnosis. A total of 1062 participants were followed a median of 24.3 months (interquartile range = 16.0-37.1 months). Latent trajectory analysis of pain severity, measured in a 100-mm visual analogue scale, identified 5 distinct trajectories: (1) mild-decreasing pain (56.2% of the cohort); (2)
