Understanding barriers to influenza vaccination among parents is important to improve vaccine uptake among children.

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly altered public perceptions of vaccines, particularly among parents. In high-income countries like the United Kingdom (UK) and Australia, factors such as misinformation, the expedited approval process of COVID-19 vaccines and unique local challenges have contributed to vaccine hesitancy, resulting in uneven uptake across various vaccination programs. Despite efforts like school-based influenza vaccination programs in the UK and free influenza vaccines in Australia, vaccination rates continue to decline. This is especially concerning given the concurrent c

Caregiver Burden and Psychological Distress in Parents of Children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders: The Mediating Roles of Rumination and Hopelessness.

PURPOSE: Caregiver burden and psychological distress have been found to have well established links in caretaker literature; however, the underlying mechanisms between them have been less frequently studied. This study aims to examine one such pathway between caregiver burden and psychological distress, through the mediating roles of rumination and hopelessness. METHOD: A total of 143 parents of children with neurodevelopmental disorders in Pakistan were interviewed using the Zarit Burden interview, short version Ruminative Responses Scale, State-Trait Hopelessness Scale and the Kessler Psych

A Cross-Sectional Study Examining Vaccine Uptake and Attitudes Among Parents Compared to Other Adults.

Encouraging vaccine uptake among U.S. residents is an increasingly important public health issue that was magnified during the COVID-19 pandemic. Vaccine hesitancy, an important correlate of vaccine uptake, has been studied extensively in parents with respect to parental attitudes and decision-making toward vaccinating their children. Less work has examined parent attitudes and behaviors regarding personal vaccine uptake and how COVID-19-related vaccine attitudes and behaviors may differ from other types of vaccine attitudes and behaviors (e.g., influenza vaccination). We surveyed a probabilit

Beyond Speech: Parental perspectives on functional outcomes in Mandarin-speaking pediatric cochlear implant users.

PURPOSE: This study explored parental perceptions of real-world functional outcomes in Mandarin-speaking children with cochlear implants (CIs), focusing on domains often overlooked by standardized tests, such as communication, social participation, and academic independence. METHOD: Sixty-three Taiwanese parents completed a culturally adapted Mandarin version of a validated parent-report questionnaire, assessing outcomes across ten functional domains. Children's clinical data including age at implantation, CI duration, speech perception, IQ, and language scores were collected. Spearman correl

Health-promoting activities among Saudi Arabian parents of children with disabilities: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Engaging in health-promoting activities is crucial for maintaining overall well-being. However, parents of children with disabilities often face unique challenges that can impact their ability to engage in such activities. These challenges may include increased caregiving responsibilities, limited access to resources, and emotional and physical burdens, which may hinder their involvement in health-promoting behaviors. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess and compare health-promoting activities among parents of children with and without disabilities, with a focus on identifying ke

Socially Oriented Approaches To Working with Children of Parents with Severe and Enduring Mental Illness: Expert Perspectives.

Children Of Parents with severe and enduring Mental Illness (COPMI) face an elevated risk for inherited mental health issues and diminished quality of life across various domains. While social factors such as social networks (the set of active, valued social ties surrounding an individual) are recognised as protective, they are often inadequately conceptualised, preventing effective leverage to promote positive outcomes. This brief report provides information regarding common network related issues faced by families, opportunities for supportive intervention, barriers and facilitators to socia

Evaluation of the Effects of the Strengthening Families Program in Quebec Adolescents and Parents Living in Challenging Family Conditions.

The Strengthening Families Program (SFP) has recognized value in preventing criminality and drug use in adolescents from underprivileged backgrounds. The objective of this study was to measure the effects of a 14-week version of this program targeting adolescents 12-16 years old in two medium-sized Quebec municipalities, using a repeated-measure design. The study participants were: 1) an intervention group, consisting of 71 adolescents and 61 parents who participated in the SFP between January 2018 and December 2019; and 2) a comparison group, consisting of 57 adolescents and 56 parents. Parental major life events before or during pregnancy and autistic behaviors among preschool children.

In this study, we aimed to examine whether parental major life events before or during pregnancy were associated with autistic behaviors in preschoolers, and whether alcohol use or smoking modified these associations. This study included 18,664 children aged 3-6 years in southern China. Parents reported seven types of major life events before or during pregnancy. Autistic behaviors were assessed by the Clancy Autism Behavior Scale. Logistic regression was applied to evaluate the associations of parental major life events with the risk of autistic behaviors, along with the modifying effects of

Parental Alcohol Use as a Risk Factor for Increased Antisocial Behavior from Adolescence to Young Adulthood.

Background: Parental alcohol use has been associated with the development of antisocial behavior in children and adolescents. However, little is known about the mechanisms through which parental alcohol use may impact antisocial behavior development. In this study, we explored mechanisms through which parent alcohol use during adolescence may impact the development of antisocial behavior from adolescence into adulthood. Objectives: We investigated whether parental monitoring during adolescence (ages 16-17), observed family conflict during adolescence, or young adult alcohol use (ages 21-22), m

Parental smoking is associated with adolescent loneliness: evidence from 71 low- and middle-income countries.

INTRODUCTION: The association between parental smoking and adolescent mental health is not well understood. We aimed to examine the association between parental smoking and adolescent loneliness using global data collected from the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) between 2009 and 2019. METHODS: A total of 187,552 adolescents aged 12-15 years in 71 low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) from the GSHS with cross-sectional design were included in this study. Loneliness was defined as feeling lonely sometimes or more frequently in the past 12 months. Parental smoking, reported b

The Mediating Role of Emotional Intelligence in the Relationship Between Parental Overprotection and Offspring's Physical Health in Adulthood.

Parental overprotection before adulthood can have enduring consequences for offspring, yet the mechanisms underlying its association with adult physical health are not fully understood. This study proposes trait emotional intelligence (trait-EI) as a pivotal mediating factor in this relationship. A sample of 459 university students (mean age = 22.42 years, SD = 1.43; 50.3% female, 49.7% male) completed measures assessing their recalled parental overprotection, trait-EI and physical health. Results from regression and mediation analyses revealed that parental overprotection was significantly ne

Needs and Expectations of Nurse-Led Digital Support Among Parents of Children in Child Health Care.

INTRODUCTION: Sweden has an extensive national child health care programme (CHCP) implying that all parents are offered support to raise their children and support them for healthy development. The programme is today built on personal physical contacts and digital components unusual. Although the digital world could be frightening and insecure, it also has benefits, because it is not dependent on face-to face meetings and is accessible more hours. In order to develop a digital channel to complement the CHPC, for the support of parents of children within child health care (CHC), parents' perspe

Gender in old care: comparing sons' and daughters' role in parental functional and psychological well-being.

China’s rapidly aging population and evolving socio-economic landscape, particularly shifting gender roles, are reshaping traditional caregiving dynamics. However, limited research has examined the associations between caregiver gender and the functional and psychological health of older parents, particularly in the context of gender matching between caregivers and care recipients. This study addresses this gap by utilizing four waves of CLHLS data, employing a Logit model for estimation, and conducting robustness checks using the PSM method. The empirical results suggest that parents with son

"We Had No Better Choice": Early and Prolonged Parent-Child Separation in Chinese Immigrant Families.

The present study aimed to understand the reasons for early and prolonged parent-child separation and its impacts among separated-reunited Chinese immigrant families. Chinese dual-earner immigrant parents, especially low-income families, are likely to send their newborns back to China to be raised by their extended families. Prior research has not yet sufficiently investigated the reasons for separation and how affected families perceive the benefits and costs, especially among those who have reunited years after separation. Based on one-on-one qualitative interviews (N = 48 in 24 parent-child

"Slowly but Steadily, You're Running Out of Steam": Aging Parents' Caregiving Experiences Through Photovoice.

Aging parents caring for adult children with disabilities or other care needs face significant challenges and health-related issues over extended periods. The aim of this study was to explore the experiences of aging parents with caregiving responsibilities. This qualitative participatory study followed the research process of a photovoice study. Thirteen parents, aged 51 to 76 years, of adult children with care needs, aged 20 to 49 years, participated in this study. The parents captured photographs depicting their daily lives which were contextualized and coded during group discussions. The d

Exploring the Association of Time-After-Death on Psychological Distress in Parents Who Lost a Child to Cancer.

We conducted a cross-sectional survey of 101 bereaved parents in Switzerland to determine the association between time-after-death and psychological distress. Eligible deceased children were identified via the national registry and forwarded to former treating pediatric oncology centers, which then contacted the parents. Psychological distress was measured using the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI-18). Time-after-death ranged from 2 to 24 years (mean = 11.3, SD = 5.6). Linear regression and spline models showed no significant association between time-after-death and psychological distress. Our fi

Preferences and willingness to pay for palliative care among parents of children with cancer: a Discrete Choice Experiment.

PURPOSE: To quantify the preference of parents of children with cancer for palliative care (PC) in China to provide references for the development of service programs. METHODS: A discrete choice experiment (DCE) was used to explore preferences for PC among parents of children with cancer. The conditional logit and mixed logit models were employed to estimate the parents' preferences. Furthermore, we calculated the willingness to pay (WTP) and simulated how variations in attribute levels influenced the probability of parental service acceptance. Meanwhile, preference heterogeneity among parent

Memory making during bereavement care following the death of a child: A survey exploring parental experiences.

BACKGROUND: Grief experienced by parents following the death of their child is profound and places them at a higher risk of adverse health outcomes. Memory making practices intend to provide families the tools to meaningfully adjust and make sense of a child's death. Although memory making practices are established in end-of-life care, it remains uncertain how memory making interventions are experienced by families during bereavement. AIM: This study aims to provide evidence-based insights into the memory making experiences of parents during neonatal and paediatric bereavement care. DESIGN:
