Counteractive Effects of Copper Nanoparticles and Betacellulin on Ovarian Cells.

Copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) are known to affect many ovarian cell functions. CuNPs, prepared using a chemical reduction method, were fully characterized by different means (TEM, DLS, XRD, Z potential, XPS, and AES). The resulting colloidal suspension contained needle-like CuNPs aggregates made of a core of metallic copper and an oxidized surface of Cu2O and CuO. The separate and coupled effects of CuNPs and the growth factor betacellulin (BTC) were analyzed on the control of some basic functions of ovarian cells. With this purpose, porcine ovarian granulosa cells, together with CuNPs, BTC, an

Homotopic functional connectivity disruptions in schizophrenia and their associated gene expression.

It has been revealed that abnormal voxel-mirrored homotopic connectivity (VMHC) is present in patients with schizophrenia, yet there are inconsistencies in the relevant findings. Moreover, little is known about their association with brain gene expression profiles. In this study, transcription-neuroimaging association analyses using gene expression data from Allen Human Brain Atlas and case-control VMHC differences from both the discovery (meta-analysis, including 9 studies with a total of 386 patients and 357 controls) and replication (separate group-level comparisons within two datasets, inc

Assessing the Feasibility of a Two-Cohort Design to Assess the Potential of Homeopathic Medicinal Products to Reduce Antimicrobial Resistance in Turkeys (The HOMAMR Project)-Study Protocol.

BACKGROUND: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a serious public health concern worldwide. The European Union requires a reduction in the use of antibiotics by 50% by 2030, with separate regulations on organic production that give preference to homeopathy and phytotherapy in organic farms before the use of conventional medicines (including antibiotics). We have therefore designed a two-phased project whose overarching aim is to investigate the potential role of homeopathic medicinal products (HMPs) in combating AMR in turkeys (the HOMAMR project): a two-cohort feasibility study using turkey-farm

Retention mechanisms of dipeptides on superficially porous particle vancomycin- and teicoplanin-based chiral stationary phases.

Chromatographic behavior of new chiral stationary phases (CSPs) Chiral-T and Chiral-V with teicoplanin and vancomycin antibiotics grafted onto superficially porous silica particles was studied in relation to dipeptide (DP) stereoisomers. The unbuffered water-methanol solutions were used as mobile phases (MPs). The effects of physical properties and molecular structure of analytes and selectors on retention and separation of DP stereoisomers are discussed herein. Chiral-T was evinced to exhibit high enantioselectivity, with highest α values attaining 16.5, 18.8 and 20.4 for Gly-Leu, dd/ll-Phe-L

Lifecycle model-based evaluation of infant 4CMenB vaccination in the UK.

OBJECTIVES: Invasive meningococcal disease, an uncommon but severe disease, imposes catastrophic health and economic burdens. Cost-utility analysis (CUA) assumes separability in lifetime health and economic variables and cannot capture the full value of preventing such burdens. We overcome these limitations with a retrospective societal perspective cost-benefit analysis (CBA) of meningococcal serogroup B vaccination (4CMenB) of one infant cohort in the United Kingdom using a health-augmented lifecycle model (HALM) incorporating health's interactions with consumption, earnings, non-market time

The dynamics of emotional behaviors in rapid eye movement sleep.

Dream's emotions could exert a major role in desensitizing negative emotions. Studying emotional dynamics (how emotions fluctuate across time) during rapid eye movement (REM) sleep could provide some insight into this function. However, studies so far have been limited to dream reports. To bypass this limit, REM sleep behavior disorder (RBD), in which participants enact their dreams, enables direct access to overt emotional dream behaviors (such as facial expressions and speeches). In total, 17 participants with RBD, and 39.7 h of REM sleep video were analyzed. The frequency of emotional behav

Individually tuned theta HD-tACS improves spatial performance.

BACKGROUND: Using transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) to improve visuospatial working memory (vsWM) has received considerable attention over the past few years. However, fundamental issues remain, such as the optimal frequency, the generality of behavioral effects, and the anatomical specificity of stimulation. OBJECTIVES: Here we examined the effects of two theory-driven tACS protocols for improving vsWM on behavioral and electroencephalogram (EEG) measures. METHODS: Twenty adults each completed 3 HD-tACS conditions (Tuned, Slow, and Sham) on two separate days. The Tuned con

Development and Validation of a Novel Radiomics-Based Nomogram With Machine Learning to Preoperatively Predict Histologic Grade in Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors.

BACKGROUD: Tumor grade is the determinant of the biological aggressiveness of pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) and the best current tool to help establish individualized therapeutic strategies. A noninvasive way to accurately predict the histology grade of PNETs preoperatively is urgently needed and extremely limited. METHODS: The models training and the construction of the radiomic signature were carried out separately in three-phase (plain, arterial, and venous) CT. Mann-Whitney U test and least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) were applied for feature preselection

Analysis of the skin conductance and pupil signals for evaluation of emotional elicitation by images and sounds.

Many studies in the literature attempt recognition of emotions through the use of videos or images, but very few have explored the role that sounds have in evoking emotions. In this study we have devised an experimental protocol for elicitation of emotions by using, separately and jointly, images and sounds from the widely used International Affective Pictures System and International Affective Digital Sounds databases. During the experiments we have recorded the skin conductance and pupillary signals and processed them with the goal of extracting indices linked to the autonomic nervous system

Landmark Series: A Review of Landmark Studies in the Treatment of Primary Localized Retroperitoneal Sarcoma.

Primary localized retroperitoneal soft tissue sarcomas (RPS) have shorter survival than other soft tissue sarcoma sites owing to higher local recurrence rates associated with histologic types most commonly found in this location, large tumor size at diagnosis (median 20 cm), and anatomical constraints of surgery in the retroperitoneum. The only curative treatment for RPS has traditionally been complete macroscopic en bloc resection with adjacent structures that cannot be surgically separated from the tumor. Compartmental resection, incorporating adjacent organs and soft tissues en bloc, even w

ACR Appropriateness Criteria® Head Trauma: 2021 Update.

Head trauma (ie, head injury) is a significant public health concern and is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children and young adults. Neuroimaging plays an important role in the management of head and brain injury, which can be separated into acute (0-7 days), subacute (<3 months), then chronic (>3 months) phases. Over 75% of acute head trauma is classified as mild, of which over 75% have a normal Glasgow Coma Scale score of 15, therefore clinical practice guidelines universally recommend selective CT scanning in this patient population, which is often based on clinical decision

Clinical Feasibility of Combining Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation with Standard Aphasia Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) is a safe, portable, and inexpensive form of noninvasive brain stimulation that appears to augment the effects of concurrent therapy. However, several methodological issues in existing studies distance tDCS from current clinical practice. In this study, we offered (and administered) tDCS to individuals seeking typical behavioral aphasia therapy on an outpatient basis. METHODS: We approached clients (n = 10) planning to receive standard aphasia therapy at a university clinic. Following a brief description of tDCS, we offered to provide

Thin-layer chromatographic quantification of magnolol and honokiol in dietary supplements and selected biological properties of these preparations.

Two isomeric biphenyl neolignans, magnolol and honokiol, are considered as constituents responsible for the healing effect of magnolia bark, a traditional Oriental medicine. To survey the increasing number of dietary supplements that contain magnolia bark or its extract, an affordable quantitative thin-layer chromatography (TLC) - densitometry method was developed. The methanol extracts were analyzed on the silica gel plates after manual sample application using n-hexane - ethyl acetate - ethanol (16:3:1, v/v/v) as a mobile phase. For quantitation, the chromatograms were scanned in the absorba

Free-running circadian breathing rhythms are eliminated by suprachiasmatic nucleus lesion.

It is widely agreed that breathing is subject to circadian regulation. Circadian differences in respiratory physiology significantly impact a number of diseases including sleep apnea, asthma, and seizure-induced death. The effect of time of day on breathing has been previously characterized; however, an endogenous free-running respiratory rhythm in mammals has not previously been described. Furthermore, it is assumed that circadian rhythms in breathing are dependent on the hypothalamic suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN), the home of the mammalian central circadian oscillator, but this has not been

The early, long-term inhibition of brain-derived neurotrophic factor improves voiding, and storage dysfunctions in mice with spinal cord injury.

AIMS: We examined the time course of urodynamic changes and the effect of the short or long-term inhibition of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) from the early phase after spinal cord injury (SCI) in mice. METHODS: The spinal cord of female C57BL/6N mice was completely transected. We examined filling cystometry and bladder BDNF levels at 10, 20, and 30 days after SCI, with an additional day-5 measurement of BDNF. In a separate group of mice, anti-BDNF antibody (Ab) (10 µg/kg/h) was subcutaneously administered using osmotic pumps from day 3 after SCI, and single-filling cystometry was p

High prevalence of exercise-induced stridor during Parkrun: a cross-sectional field-based evaluation.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The differential diagnosis for exercise-associated breathlessness is broad, however, when a young athletic individual presents with respiratory symptoms, they are most often prescribed inhaler therapy for presumed exercise-induced asthma (EIA). The purpose of this study was therefore to use a novel sound-based approach to assessment to evaluate the prevalence of exertional respiratory symptoms and characterise abnormal breathing sounds in a large cohort of recreationally active individuals. METHODS: Cross-sectional field-based evaluation of individuals completing Par

Hospitalists' Needs Assessment and Perceived Barriers in Wound Care Management: A Quality Improvement Project.

The purpose of this quality improvement project was to determine hospitalists' knowledge, practices, and perspectives related to management of pressure injuries and neuropathic/diabetic foot complications (having a foot ulcer or subsequent development of a foot infection because of a foot ulcer). We also sought to identify resources for and knowledge-based barriers to management of these wounds. This quality improvement effort targeted an interdisciplinary group of 55 hospitalists in internal medicine that consisted of 8 nurse practitioners, 10 physician assistants, and 38 physicians. Both Val158Met Polymorphism of Catechol-O-Methyltransferase Gene and Menstrual Cycle Affect Prepulse Inhibition but Not Attentional Modulation of Prepulse Inhibition in Younger-Adult Females.

Prepulse inhibition (PPI) can be modulated by both the Val158Met (rs4680) polymorphism of the Catechol-O-Methyltransferase (COMT) gene and the menstrual-cycle-related hormone fluctuations, each of which affects the subcortical/cortical dopamine metabolism. PPI can also be modulated by attention. The attentional modulation of PPI (AMPPI) is sensitive to psychoses. Whether the Val158Met polymorphism affects the AMPPI in female adults at different menstrual-cycle phases is unknown. This study examined whether AMPPI and/or PPI are affected by the Val158Met polymorphism in 177 younger-adult females

Implementation of the FLORET UTE sequence for lung imaging.

PURPOSE: Magnetic resonance imaging of lungs is inherently challenging, but it has become more common with the use of UTE sequences and their relative insensitivity to motion. Spiral UTE sequences have been touted recently as having greater k-space sampling efficiencies than radial UTE, but few are designed for the shorter T2 * of the lung. In this study, FLORET (Fermat looped, orthogonally encoded trajectories), a recently developed spiral 3D-UTE sequence designed for the short T2 * species, was implemented in human lungs for the first time and the images were compared with traditional radial
