Sap-sucking insects often transmit plant viruses but also carry insect viruses, which infect insects but not plants. The impact of such insect viruses on insect host biology and ecology is largely unknown. Here, we identified a novel insect-specific virus carried by brown citrus aphid (Aphis citricidus), which we tentatively named Aphis citricidus picornavirus (AcPV). Phylogenetic analysis discovered a monophyletic cluster with AcPV and other unassigned viruses, suggesting that these viruses represent a new family in order Picornavirales. Systemic infection with AcPV triggered aphid antiviral

In the search for mollicutes in wild birds, six Mycoplasma strains were isolated from tracheal swabs taken from four different species of seabirds. Four strains originated from three Yellow-legged gulls (Larus michahellis) and a Cory's shearwater (Calonectris borealis) from Spain, one from a South African Kelp gull (Larus dominicanus), and one from an Italian Black-headed gull (Chroicocephalus ridibundus). These Mycoplasma strains presented 99 % 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity values with Mycoplasma (M.) gallisepticum. Phylogenetic analyses of marker genes (16S rRNA gene and rpoB) confirmed

The current pandemic of COVID-19 caused by a novel coronavirus, severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), threatens human health around the world. Of particular concern is that bats are recognized as one of the most potential natural hosts of SARS-CoV-2; however, coronavirus ecology in bats is still nascent. Here, we performed a degenerate primer screening and next-generation sequencing analysis of 112 bats, collected from Hainan Province, China. Three coronaviruses, namely bat betacoronavirus (Bat CoV) CD35, Bat CoV CD36 and bat alphacoronavirus CD30 were identified. Bat C

BACKGROUND: The Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic influences all around the world. The SARS-CoV-2 ORF8 accessory gene represents multiple functions in virus-host interaction. The current study aimed to compare the ORF8 substitutions and epitope features of these substitutions in the various SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks including delta, alpha, and wild type variants in Iran from 2020 to 2022. In addition, we evaluate B cell, HLA I and II epitopes, by in-silico approach to ORF8 binding site prediction.
METHODS: The samples were collected from patients diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 infection via

Parasitic flatworms infect diverse vertebrates and are major threats to animal and even human health; however, little is known about the virome of these lower life forms. Using viral metagenomic sequencing, we characterized the virome of the parasitic flatworms collected from major domestic animals, including Dicrocoelium lanceatum and Taenia hydatigena, Echinococcus granulosus sensu stricto and Echinococcus multilocularis. Seven and three different viruses were discovered from D. lanceatum and T. hydatigena, respectively, and no viral sequences were found in adult tapeworms and protoscoleces

The zoonotic spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and the associated infections are becoming a major threat to the human population worldwide. Strategies to identify the potential pathogen dissemination by seemingly healthy livestock are at a nascent stage and it is of significant importance to monitor environmental evolution of AMR. In this study, a multidrug resistant strain (MDR) of Enterobacter hormaechei MS2 isolated from the feces of healthy broiler chicken has been characterized by whole-genome sequencing-based method. Here, the isolate was primarily subjected to antimicrobial susce

From a farming family of 13 children in New Zealand, I graduated with a Master of Science degree in microbiology from the University of Otago (Dunedin, Otago, New Zealand). I established the first veterinary virology laboratory at Wallaceville Animal Research Station. I subsequently completed my PhD degree at Australian National University (Canberra, Australia) and a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Michigan (Ann Arbor, Michigan). While in New South Wales, Australia, a walk on a beach littered with dead mutton birds (shearwaters) with Dr. Graeme Laver led to the surveillance of inf

Until recently, members of the classical Bordetella species comprised only pathogenic bacteria that were thought to live exclusively in warm-blooded animals. The close phylogenetic relationship of Bordetella with Achromobacter and Alcaligenes, which include primarily environmental bacteria, suggests that the ancestral Bordetellae were probably free-living. Eventually, the Bordetella species evolved to infect and live within warm-blooded animals. The modern history of pathogens related to the genus Bordetella started towards the end of the 19th century when it was discovered in the infected res

Rotavirus A infects many mammalian species, including humans and causes diarrhea and gastrointestinal diseases. The virus also infects various bird species, including chickens, although information of avian rotavirus A (ARVA) infection in chicken populations in Japan is scarce. In this study, we report for the first time the whole-genome sequences of ARVA strains from Japanese chicken populations. The virus strains were inoculated to MA104 cells and cultured viruses were used to obtain the sequences with the MiSeq system, and genetic analysis demonstrated the genotype constellation of G19-P[30

Infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) causes respiratory diseases in chickens, incurring great losses to the poultry industry worldwide. In this study, we isolated an IBV strain, designated as AH-2020, from the chickens vaccinated with H120 and 4/91 in Anhui, China. The sequence homology analysis based on the S1 gene revealed that AH-2020 shares low similarities with the 3 vaccine strains, namely, H120, LDT3-A, and 4/91 (78.19, 80.84, and 81.6%, respectively). Phylogenetic analysis based on the S1 gene revealed that AH-2020 clustered with the GI-19 type. Furthermore, protein modeling revealed that

Solute binding proteins (SBPs) are of central physiological relevance for prokaryotes. These proteins present substrates to transporters, but they also stimulate different signal transduction receptors. SBPs form a superfamily of at least 33 protein Pfam families. To assess possible links between SBP sequence and the ligand recognized, we have inspected manually all SBP three-dimensional structures deposited in the protein data bank and retrieved 748 prokaryotic structures that have been solved in complex with bound ligand. These structures were classified into 26 SBP Pfam families. The analys
