Pain, dynamic postural control, mental health and impact of oral health in individuals with temporomandibular disorder: A cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Some studies claim that functional changes in TMD affect the stomatognathic system (SS) and could contribute to the emergence of pain and changes in postural control. PURPOSE: To characterize and to compare pain, dynamic postural control (DPC), mental health and impact of oral health (QoL) in different types of temporomandibular disorders (TMD). METHOD: Cross-sectional study with 116 participants evaluated by a validated TMD protocol and divided into three groups, muscle TMD (TMD-M, n = 32), joint TMD (TMD-J, n = 30) and muscle-joint TMD (TMD-MJ, n = 54).Chewing pain, DPC, anxi

The Effects of Electrical Stimulation of Lower Extremity Muscles on Balance in Stroke Patients: A Systematic Review of Literatures.

OBJECTIVE: Stroke is one of the main causes of disability and the second common cause of mortality in the world. Stroke causes relatively permanent motor defects, including balance disorder, and thus affects an individual's functional capacity and independence. Many clinical types of research have been conducted to evaluate the effect of functional electrical stimulation (FES) on balance in post-stroke patients. The objective of this study was to systematically review the effect of functional electrical stimulation (FES) on balance as compared to conventional therapy alone in post-stroke. MET

The safety and feasibility of a Halliwick style of aquatic physiotherapy for falls and balance dysfunction in people with Parkinson's Disease: A single blind pilot trial.

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence that aquatic physiotherapy may be effective for people with Parkinson's Disease (PD) but most studies have investigated land based type exercises in the aquatic environment. Few studies have examined customised aquatic therapies such as the Halliwick concept which focuses on trunk rotation and core stabilisation. OBJECTIVE: The primary aim was to determine the feasibility of a Halliwick style aquatic physiotherapy intervention for people with PD. The secondary aim was to compare the Halliwick intervention with traditional aquatic and land based physiother

Longitudinal assessments of balance and jump-landing performance before and after anterior cruciate ligament injuries in collegiate athletes.

The purpose was to quantify the effect of an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury on balance and jump-landing performance and bilateral asymmetries. Among 500 collegiate athletes who performed a reaching test and a double-leg counter-movement jump-landing test at baseline, 8 male and 6 female athletes suffered ACL injuries. In the follow-up, they performed the reaching test 3 and 6 months after ACL reconstruction (ACLR) and the jump-landing test 6 months after ACLR. Less reaching distances for the injured leg and increased reaching distance asymmetries were observed 3 and 6 months after ACL

High parathyroid hormone levels are associated with poor balance in older persons: A cross-sectional study.

OBJECTIVES: A high level of parathyroid hormone (PTH) was recently identified as a risk factor for falling. As balance instability is one of the major risk factors for falls, we aimed to investigate whether high PTH concentrations are associated with poor balance in older persons. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study with 127 community-dwelling older adults (75% female), aged 65-96 years, at the Falls and Fracture Clinic, Western Health-Sunshine Hospital, Melbourne, Australia. Patients with clinical conditions that could affect balance (e.g. Meniere's disease), denosumab users, and those with

Wheelchair Neuroprosthesis for Improving Dynamic Trunk Stability.

Trunk instability is a major problem for individuals with thoracic and cervical spinal cord injury. Functional electrical stimulation (FES) neuroprosthesis, a technology that uses small electrical currents to artificially contract muscles, has previously been utilized to improve trunk stability during quasi-static and dynamic sitting. The aim of this paper was to develop the first powered wheelchair-based neuroprosthesis and to test its feasibility for improving trunk stability. Eleven male, able-bodied individuals participated in the feasibility study. While participants were seated, the whee

[Spinal orthoses in the treatment of vertebral fractures with osteoporosis : A systematic review article].

This literature search concerning the potential role of spinal orthoses for rehabilitation and treatment of atraumatic vertebral fractures between Th4 and L5 with osteoporosis and without any evidence for a secondary cause, provided no evidence for the benefits of traditional rigid thoracolumbar corsets, which only had a poor compliance. In addition, there are indications that these rigid corsets may even worsen the disease condition especially in the long-term. Wearing these corsets can result in further loss of muscle mass and strength followed by loss of bone and bone mass. Both together ca
