In 1997, 18 influenza patients were detected who were infected with influenza A(H5N1) virus. Six patients died. Presumably most of the patients had acquired the infection directly from chickens with the fowl plague prevalent in China in 1997. These are the first reported cases of isolation of influenza viruses belonging to one of the H4-H15 subtypes from human influenza patients. Man-to-man transmission of the virus has not been demonstrated but cannot be excluded in every case. Genetic analyses of seven of these virus isolates showed that no reassortment with a human or porcine influenza viru

INTRODUCTION: Avian salmonellosis is a major bacterial disease affecting the poultry industry. With increasing restrictions on antibiotic use in animal husbandry, alternative strategies for disease prevention are urgently required. Traditional Chinese medicine, characterized by a low risk of antimicrobial resistance, represents a promising alternative for sustainable livestock production.
METHODS: First of all, Pulsatillae radix and six additional medicinal herbs were combined to formulate Wengxian granules, and their protective effects against avian salmonellosis were assessed. Then a syste

(1) Background: Aspects of the Mongolian food supply, including high availability of animal-source foods and few plant foods, are plausibly associated with disease in the population. Data on Mongolian diets are lacking, and these risks are poorly quantified. The purpose of this study was to provide a multifaceted nutritional analysis of the modern Mongolian diet. (2) Methods: The study population consisted of 167 male and 167 female healthy non-pregnant urban and nomadic adults (22-55 years) randomly selected from lists of residents in 8 regions. From 2011-2016, 3-day weighed diet records and

BACKGROUND: Newcastle disease virus (NDV) is a threat to poultry production worldwide. A better understanding of mechanisms of resistance and susceptibility to this virus will improve measures for NDV prevention and control. Males and females from resistant Fayoumi and susceptible Leghorn lines were either challenged with a lentogenic strain of the virus or given a mock infection at 3 weeks of age. The lung transcriptomes generated by RNA-seq were studied using contrasts across the challenged and nonchallenged birds, the two lines, and three time points post-infection, and by using Weighted Ge

Avian necrotic enteritis (NE), caused by Clostridium perfringens, poses a significant threat to the global poultry industry, exacerbated by rising antibiotic resistance. In this study, we applied a pangenome-guided reverse vaccinology approach to design a multi-epitope chimeric vaccine candidate. From the analysis of 45 genomes, our filtering pipeline identified three conserved and functionally synergistic target proteins: the type IV pilus assembly protein PilO and the prepilin peptidase-dependent protein A, both necessary for bacterial adhesion, and the regulatory protein MsrR, which is cruc

Goose astrovirus genotype 2 (GAstV-2) is an emerging pathogen responsible for gout in goslings, posing a serious threat to the goose breeding industry in China. Although the disease has caused significant economic losses, the mechanisms underlying GAstV-2-induced pathogenesis, particularly gout formation, remain poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the effect of GAstV-2 infection on autophagy in primary goose renal tubular epithelial (GRTE) cells and explored the associated signaling pathways. Our results demonstrated that GAstV-2 infection induced autophagic flux in GRTE cells, a

To assess the potential threat of the novel H3 subtype Avian Influenza Virus (AIV) to the poultry industry and human health, whole-genome sequencing and phylogenetic tree and homology analysis were conducted on four H3N3 viruses and one H3N8 virus isolated from three different regions. Representative strains were selected for the study of pathogenicity and transmissibility in Specific Pathogen Free (SPF) chickens, BALB/c mice, and Hartley guinea pigs. Phylogenetic tree and homology analyses indicate that the eight gene segments of the four H3N3 viruses are derived from reassortments involving

Riemerella anatipestifer (R. anatipestifer) is a Gram-negative bacterial pathogen for ducks and other birds, the clinical isolates of this bacterium are commonly multidrug-resistant. In the previous study, it was showed that intracellular excess iron increased the sensitivity of R. anatipestifer to aztreonam and this process depended on the respiratory complex subunits nuoB and sdhC. However, the underlying mechanisms of respiratory complex involvement in antibiotic resistance was not to be fully understood. In this study, it was shown that under iron-limited conditions, R. anatipestifer exhib

Broiler ascites syndrome (BAS), a non-infectious group disease caused by relative hypoxia in broilers, is one of the three most serious nutritional metabolic diseases that jeopardize the chicken industry. At present, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is widely used to treat BAS, however, its mechanism of action remains unclear. Therefore, this study aimed to screen a new traditional Chinese medicine compound (NCMC) for the treatment of BAS and to elucidate its therapeutic mechanism through an integrated strategy of data mining, network pharmacology, molecular docking, and animal experiments.

Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) is a major respiratory pathogen of poultry, and rapid point of care tests for routine on farm surveillance are currently unavailable. This study describes a user-friendly Loop Mediated Isothermal Amplification (LAMP) assay for detecting MG, used together with a rapid DNA extraction method that supports field deployment. The performance of the LAMP assay was compared with a conventional PCR assay using three sample sets, including MG cultures, tracheal swabs from vaccinated and unvaccinated chickens, and cloacal swabs from turkeys. DNA was extracted using a commerc

Heat stress (HS) causes organ damage and has detrimental impacts on the welfare and production in broilers. As a crucial immune organ, the spleen exerts a key role in immune homeostasis of broilers. Fucoidan (FUC) is a marine functional substance and extracted from seaweeds with multiple biological activities, such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects. This experiment attempted to investigate the protective effect of fucoidan on HS-induced spleen injury in broilers. A total of 240 male Arbor Acres (AA) broilers at 21 d of age were randomly assigned to five groups: control (CON) group,

Avian coccidiosis compromises growth performance and gut health in broiler chickens. We investigated whether the dietary fat source (soybean oil vs. canola oil) and curcumin supplementation (0.02%) could enhance resilience to a mixed Eimeria challenge. In a 42-day trial, 660 one-day-old male Ross 308 broiler chicks were allocated to five treatments, with six replicates of 22 birds each: an unchallenged control group fed a soybean oil-based diet and four challenged groups fed soybean oil, soybean oil plus curcumin, canola oil, or canola oil plus curcumin. Challenged birds received an oral gavag

Hepatitis-hydropericardium syndrome (HHS) caused by fowl adenovirus serotype 4 (FAdV-4) has led to substantial economic losses in the poultry industry. Subunit vaccines based on the knob domains of Fiber1 and Fiber2 (F1F2K) are safe but exhibit limited immunogenicity. To address this, we sought to enhance the immune response by presenting F1F2K on self-assembling Mi3 nanoparticles (F1F2K:Mi3) and to compare its efficacy with the F1F2K monomer. F1F2K was conjugated to Mi3 via the SpyTag/SpyCatcher system. Chickens were immunized twice with F1F2K:Mi3 nanoparticles, F1F2K monomer, Mi3, or PBS, an

Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma coactivator 1-alpha (PGC-1α) is a key regulator of lipid metabolism, particularly in fatty acid oxidation and energy homeostasis. A recent study revealed that PGC-1α exhibits differential expression in mammalian and goose fatty liver, but its function in lipid accumulation in goose fatty liver remains unclear. In this study, thirty 63-day-old male Landes geese were randomly assigned to control and overfeeding groups. Histological analysis was performed using Hematoxylin and Eosin staining and Sirius Red staining after feeding. In vitro, primary

Organic acids are readily absorbed in the upper gastrointestinal tract, which hinders their optimal delivery to segments where gut health issues mostly occur. Glycerol esters of butyric and valeric acid (BVg) are known for their capacity to release acids within the small intestine. This study evaluated the impact of BVg on the performance and gut health of broilers under a sub-clinical necrotic enteritis (NE) challenge. A total of 1200 Cobb 500 chicks were assigned to four treatments: 1) UC- unchallenged control, 2) CC- NE challenged control, 3) BVg- CC plus BVg (1000, 500, 250 g/ton in starte

We investigated the effects of arginine and methionine supplementation in reduced protein diets on performance of broilers under concurrent heat stress (HS) and coccidia challenge. From d9 to 28, the experimental grower diets: positive control (PC) with 20.0 % crude protein (CP); negative control (NC) with 17.5 % CP; NC + 50 % arginine or methionine (ARG/MET) were fed to the chickens. From d14, chickens in the thermoneutral (NT) groups were raised under recommended temperature, and chickens in HS group were exposed to cyclic HS at 35°C for 8h/day. All chickens were oral-challenged with mixed E

Nontyphoidal Salmonella (NTS) are major foodborne pathogens primarily transmitted to humans through contaminated poultry products. Increased antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in NTS, including Salmonella Heidelberg (SH), has recently become a public health issue. Current control measures are inadequate, emphasizing the need for novel approaches to mitigate NTS colonization in poultry and contamination of poultry products. We hypothesized that commensal Escherichia coli can reduce antibiotic-resistant NTS colonization in the chicken intestines by modulating the fitness, virulence, and AMR potentia

Salmonella is a leading cause of gastrointestinal illness and foodborne outbreaks worldwide, with poultry products such as eggs as the primary source of infection. In this context, live attenuated vaccines play a critical role in reducing the risk of infection in poultry flocks. However, their impact on the gut microbiota remains poorly understood. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of a live attenuated combined vaccine against Salmonella Enteritidis and Salmonella Typhimurium on the gut microbiota of chicks challenged with S. Typhimurium, including the study of microbial
