OBJECTIVE: To compare the efficacy, safety and morbidity of surgical versus percutaneous atrial septal defect (ASD) closure.
POPULATION AND METHODS: We studied all cases of ASD closure (surgical or percutaneous) performed in our hospital during the last 5 years. BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: The Ravitch repair of pectus excavatum removes segments of abnormal costal cartilages after which the sternum is elevated and stabilized. Some investigators have found a worsening in total lung capacity postoperatively. Recently, a technique has been used in which the costal cartilages are preserved, and the sternum is elevated with an internal steel bar (Nuss repair). The authors hypothesized that placement of a substernal bar in the first stage of the Nuss repair will not adversely affect pulmonary and exercise function.

BACKGROUND: Atrial fibrillation is associated with a high risk for cardioembolic stroke. The left atrial appendage (LAA) is the source of the vast majority of these thromboemboli. A novel implanted device for percutaneous LAA transcatheter occlusion (PLAATO) has been designed to seal the LAA. Pulmonary arteriovenous malformation (PAVM), as a part of Osler-Weber-Rendu Syndrome, in the neonate, is a rare hereditary vascular malformation. Large intrapulmonary right-to-left shunting, causing hypoxaemia and cyanosis, can be a life-threatening condition. Repeated transcatheter coil embolization procedures proved to be a favorable strategy to improve systemic arterial oxygen saturation, with a good outcome in a newborn child. Both secundum atrial septal defect (ASD) and patent foramen ovale (PFO) have been closed interventionally using several different occluding devices. At a single institution we strived for interventional occlusion of interatrial communications using the Amplatzer device exclusively. We studied the results of 140 STA-peg arthroereisis procedures performed for the treatment of planovalgus foot deformity in 78 ambulatory children with neuromuscular disease. BACKGROUND: Supravalvular mitral ring is exceedingly uncommon.
METHODS: We report a 4-year-old girl with supravalvular stenotic mitral ring and ventricular septal defect (VSD). The VSD was closed by a Dacron patch and the supravalvular ring was excised. For treatment of supravalvular mitral ring with obstruction, surgical resection is commonly performed.
RESULTS: There are no reports of long-term follow-up after resecting the supravalvular mitral ring.
CONCLUSION: In our case, no mitral stenosis was evident on postoperative echocardiogram performed 3 years after surgery.

PURPOSE: We studied the efficacy and durability of injection of glutaraldehyde cross-linked bovine collagen for treating urinary incontinence in children.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: From April 1994 to July 1995, 12 boys and 8 girls 4 to 18 years old (mean age 9.5) underwent endoscopically directed collagen injections into the bladder neck. Followup ranged from 9 to 23 months (mean 15.2). The etiology of incontinence included myelodysplasia in 12 patients, exstrophy/epispadias in 4, and epidural abscess, sacral agenesis, imperforate anus and posterior urethral valves in 1 each.

Short periods of strain have effects on tissue differentiation in a skeletal defect. Little is known about the importance of the duration of such periods.
