Haemorrhagic radiation proctitis (HRP) is infrequently seen amongst the patients who are either undergoing or have undergone radiotherapy to the pelvis. We treated 16 documented cases of HRP, who did not respond to conventional steroid retention enemas, with 4% formalin application. It was observed that the rectal bleeding was controlled completely in 81% cases in median follow up of 11 months (range 6-17 months) and diversion colostomy could be avoided in all the cases. The effectiveness of local formalin application in severe HRP is described in this article.

The mortality pattern among 999 Danish patients who had been subjected to angiography of the carotid artery with the alpha-ray emitting X-ray contrast media Thorotrast during the period 1935-47 was assessed by record linkage with the National Death Registry through 1989. Micronucleated polychromatic (mn-PCE) and normochromatic erythrocytes (nm-NCE) were enumerated in the bone marrow and peripheral blood of Swiss male mice at different time intervals following whole-body (1.0 Gy) gamma-irradiation. Endocavitary rectal irradiation is a well established curative treatment for patients with selected early cases of adenocarcinoma of the rectum. At McGill we use a long source-skin distance (SSD) rectal irradiation technique as an alternative to the standard short SSD rectal irradiation technique originally described by Papillon. Eight patients, seven women and one man, were treated between April 1986 and November 1988. Median age was 72.5 years (range 46-86 years). A retrospective review is presented on 145 patients who underwent limb-sparing surgery and radiation therapy (with or without adjuvant chemotherapy) for their primary soft tissue sarcomas of the extremities on protocol between 1975 and 1986. Subclavian vein thrombosis is a relatively uncommon but potentially morbid disease entity. To determine the frequency, cause, and best mode of treatment of this problem, we performed a chart review of all patients with a diagnosis of subclavian vein thrombosis at two major metropolitan hospitals during a 6-year period.
