Radiation-induced temporary hair loss as a radiation damage only occurring in patients who had the combination of MDCT and DSA.

As imaging technologies become increasingly advanced, it is possible to obtain detailed morphological information as well as functional imaging data. In some imaging technologies, the radiation dose increases with the ability to obtain better images or more detailed information. We encountered three cases of temporary bandage-shaped hair loss, which was caused by perfusion studies of the head by multi-detector row computed tomography (MDCT) for evaluation of cerebral blood flow in patients with vascular disorders. In all three patients with temporary hair loss, two angiographies of the head ha

Complications from radiographer-performed double contrast barium enemas.

AIM: To determine the types and rates of complications encountered by radiographers when performing double contrast barium enemas (DCBE). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Seven hundred and forty-one questionnaires were posted to radiographers who had in the last 5 years attended one of the biannual barium enema training courses. RESULTS: Of 741 questionnaires posted 407 (54.9%) were returned completed. Approximately 348,000 barium enema examinations had been performed. Fifty-nine radiographers reported 89 complications, including 13 intra-peritoneal and 11 extra-peritoneal perforations. There were fiv

Reproducibility of mammographic classifications for non-palpable suspect lesions with microcalcifications.

Observer variability in interpretation of mammograms is a well-known problem, especially for microcalcifications. The classification of the mammographic findings depends upon this interpretation. We performed an intraobserver study to evaluate a breast imaging reporting and data system (BI-RADS) based method for description and classification of non-palpable lesions with microcalcifications. A set of 100 non-palpable mammographic lesions mainly consisting of microcalcifications was described and classified on two occasions, by two radiologists at an interval of 6 months. The intraobserver vari

Complications of prostate cancer treatment: spectrum of imaging findings.

The imaging appearances of prostate cancer are well described in the radiology literature, but little has been written about the detection and appearance of the complications of therapy for this disease. The most frequently used treatments for prostate cancer are surgical therapy (eg, radical retropubic prostatectomy, radical perineal prostatectomy), radiation therapy (eg, brachytherapy, external-beam radiation therapy, three-dimensional conformal radiation therapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy), and cryoablative therapy, each of which may lead to complications with characteristic ima

[Contrast-enhanced MR angiography for differentiation between perigastric and submucosal gastric fundal varices].

PURPOSE: To evaluate contrast-enhanced MR angiography for the distinction between perigastric and submucosal fundal varices. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nineteen consecutive patients with clinically suspected fundal varices underwent contrast-enhanced MR angiography and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) within one week. Diagnostic confidence for the detection of perigastric and submucosal fundal varices was compared between MR angiography (two radiologists) and EUS (one gastroenterologist), and the agreement of size and location was evaluated. RESULTS: Both MR angiography and EUS detected perigastric v

MR imaging findings of bone marrow changes in patients with cystic fibrosis.

The purpose of this work was to evaluate bone marrow abnormalities in the lower limbs of patients with cystic fibrosis by means of MR imaging. Eight patients with cystic fibrosis ranging in age from 16 to 35 years (average age 25.1 years) were evaluated with MR imaging of the lower extremities. T1 weighted spin echo sequences were obtained in all patients. Pelvis, femora and tibia were imaged in the coronal plane whereas the feet were imaged in the sagittal plane. The studies were independently evaluated by two musculoskeletal radiologists. The images were not mixed with disease-free images, b

Involvement of the proximal tibiofibular joint in osteoarthritis of the knee.

This study was performed to evaluate the possible involvement of the proximal tibiofibular joint in primary osteoarthritis of the knee. A total of 40 patients with primary osteoarthritis of the knee who had magnetic resonance imaging scans were reexamined for proximal tibiofibular joint involvement. The patient was questioned if pain was present in the proximal tibiofibular joint while at rest, when walking and climbing stairs. Symptoms were evaluated by applying moderate compression over the proximal tibiofibular joint during active ankle and knee motions. Magnetic resonance imaging scans wer

Imaging techniques in the management of anorexia and bulimia nervosa.

This paper discusses the contribution offered by radiological techniques to the diagnosis of the medical and surgical complications of anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia (BN) with the aim of providing general indications as to their use and suggesting the best-suited techniques. In the broad field of the complications of malnourishment, the use of magnetic resonance (MR) instead of computed tomography (CT) in the assessment of brain atrophy provides much more information at a better cost-benefit ratio. Like brain atrophy, other complications may be chance radiographic findings, such as catharti

Progress report from the American College of Radiology Breast MR Imaging Lexicon Committee.

Given the wide variety of terms for abnormal findings on contrast-enhanced breast MR imaging studies, the United States Public Health Services' Office on Women's Health, the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer Research, and the American College of Radiology, funded a committee (or "working group") of international experts to develop a standard language for breast MR imaging reporting. During the last three years, the group members have developed a preliminary Breast MR Imaging Lexicon to describe abnormal contrast-enhancing findings in the breast on MR imaging studies, with a special f

Imaging in the preoperative assessment of conjoined twins.

Conjoined twins are rare and present a unique challenge to pediatric surgeons and radiologists. Planning of surgical separation is aided by accurate preoperative imaging. Such twins are classified according to the most prominent site of connection: the thorax (thoracopagus), abdomen (omphalopagus), sacrum (pygopagus), pelvis (ischiopagus), skull (craniopagus), face (cephalopagus), or back (rachipagus). The area of fusion largely determines the imaging modalities used. Thoracic conjunction is most common and requires cardiac assessment. Magnetic resonance imaging and computed tomography provide

The abdominal compartment syndrome: CT findings.

OBJECTIVE: The abdominal compartment syndrome is a potentially fatal condition resulting from pathologic elevation of intraabdominal pressure. We evaluated preoperative abdominal CT scans of four patients with proven abdominal compartment syndrome to identify signs of increased intraabdominal pressure. CONCLUSION: CT findings common to all four patients included tense infiltration of the retroperitoneum out of proportion to peritoneal disease, extrinsic compression of the inferior vena cava by retroperitoneal hemorrhage or exudate, and massive abdominal distention with an increased ratio of a

Monitoring patients with left ventricular failure by electrical impedance tomography.

Acute left ventricular failure (LVF) is a common medical emergency but detection and monitoring of pulmonary oedema remains problematic. Fluid is an important determinant of tissue impedance. Electrical impedance tomography (EIT) is a non-invasive technique allowing localisation of impedance changes within tissue. We have investigated the relationship between LVF and the electrical impedance of lung tissue. Twenty patients with a clinical diagnosis of acute left ventricular failure were compared with 30 normal subjects. Patients were monitored using serial chest radiographs and electrical impe

Evaluation of canine lumbosacral stenosis using intravenous contrast-enhanced computed tomography.

The objective of this study was to evaluate intravenous contrast-enhanced computed tomography as a technique for predicting the within-level location(s) of compressive soft tissues in the canine lumbosacral spine. Pre-operative intravenous contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the L5-S3 vertebral levels was performed in 12 consecutive large breed dogs with lumbosacral stenosis. The images were evaluated for enhancement of soft tissues by two radiologists who were unaware of the surgical findings. For each within-level location (dorsal canal, ventral canal, right lateral recess, left lateral

Use of fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) pulse sequences in perinatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the usefulness of fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR) techniques in patients with perinatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy. 13 patients with a history of perinatal hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (age range 1 month to 3.6 years) underwent T1 and T2 weighted spin echo and FLAIR imaging with a 1.5 T superconducting unit. FLAIR images were qualitatively evaluated in comparison with T1 and T2 weighted images by three experienced radiologists. Quantitative analysis (contrast and contrast-to-noise ratio) was also performed. FLAIR images were prefe

Patient dose reduction by audit of grid usage in barium enemas.

Patient dose reduction may be achieved by removal of the antiscatter grid during fluoroscopy when fine detail is not required, such as during the filling phase of barium enemas. A questionnaire revealed that none of 22 trainee radiologists routinely removed the grid for the filling phase of adult barium enemas. Following this, 100 consecutive barium enemas were observed, with assessment of patient radiation dose by means of a dose-area product meter. The grid was removed in only six examinations. Phantom measurements implied a possible 46% reduction in dose for the filling phase by correct gri
