A new gelatinous host for pelagic fishes: First in situ record of an association between driftfishes (Stromateiformes, Ariommatidae) and nudibranchs (Mollusca, Phylliroidae).

We describe the first recorded association between fishes and nudibranchs in epipelagic waters. In situ observations and photographs of a juvenile spotted driftfish Ariomma regulus (Stromateiformes; Ariommatidae) swimming alongside the planktonic nudibranch Phylliroe lichtensteinii (Gastropoda; Phylliroidae) were made during blackwater scuba dives off Palm Beach, Florida, United States of America. In this paper, we describe this behavior, highlighting a previously undocumented zooplanktonic host used by fishes. This finding also demonstrates the importance of community science in advancing our

Stimulus-induced narrow-band gamma oscillations in humans can be recorded using open-hardware low-cost EEG amplifier.

Stimulus-induced narrow-band gamma oscillations (30-70 Hz) in human electro-encephalograph (EEG) have been linked to attentional and memory mechanisms and are abnormal in mental health conditions such as autism, schizophrenia and Alzheimer's Disease. However, since the absolute power in EEG decreases rapidly with increasing frequency following a "1/f" power law, and the gamma band includes line noise frequency, these oscillations are highly susceptible to instrument noise. Previous studies that recorded stimulus-induced gamma oscillations used expensive research-grade EEG amplifiers to address

Effects of assessment method (real-time versus video-recorded) on a validated pain-altered behavior scale used in castrated piglets.

We aimed to compare two assessment methodologies (real-time vs. video-recorded) using the Unesp-Botucatu Pig Composite Acute Pain Scale (UPAPS) in piglets before and after castration. Twenty-nine male piglets were castrated. Four observers scored the UPAPS over three perioperative timepoints of castration following two assessment methodologies. In real-time assessments, the observers were in-person observing the piglets in front of the pen. After two weeks, the observers did video-recorded assessments randomizing piglets and timepoints. Modeling was conducted to compare the UPAPS and each pain

Leveraging electronic medical record-embedded standardised electroencephalogram reporting to develop neonatal seizure prediction models: a retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Accurate prediction of seizures can help to direct resource-intense continuous electroencephalogram (CEEG) monitoring to neonates at high risk of seizures. We aimed to use data from standardised EEG reports to generate seizure prediction models for vulnerable neonates. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study, we included neonates who underwent CEEG during the first 30 days of life at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (Philadelphia, PA, USA). The hypoxic ischaemic encephalopathy subgroup included only patients with CEEG data during the first 5 days of life, International

Analysis of autonomic function during natural defecation in patients with irritable bowel syndrome using real-time recording with a wearable device.

BACKGROUND: Autonomic dysfunction is a factor in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, there are no reports of autonomic nervous system (ANS) activity during natural defecation in patients with IBS. We aimed to clarify the relationship between ANS activity and life events, such as defecation and abdominal symptoms, using real-time recording. METHODS: Six patients with IBS and 14 healthy controls were enrolled in this prospective multicenter study. ANS activity was recorded for 24 h using a T-shirt wearable device, and life events were recorded simultaneously in real time using a smartphone

Use of an alternating current amplifier when recording the ERG c-wave to evaluate the function of retinal pigment epithelial cells in rats.

PURPOSE: We studied the conditions under which c-waves of the electroretinogram (ERG), that represent retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) function, were detectable using an alternating current (AC) amplifier and whether the c-wave recorded using an AC amplifier was useful for evaluating RPE function. METHODS: We recorded ERG responses in rats to 5 s stimuli under the conditions in which the low-cut frequency and the stimulus luminance were varied. In addition, changes in ERGs were studied after intravenous injection of sodium iodate (SI) to induce RPE degeneration. RESULTS: The c-wave was detec

Record high parainfluenza season in children after relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions in fall 2021-A nationwide register study in Finland.

Social restrictions interrupted the circulation of common respiratory viruses among children in spring 2020. In the winter season 2020-2021, only rhinovirus spread in Finland. As the restrictions were ended in September 2021, we saw record high epidemic peak of parainfluenza. Typically, the epidemic peak is in springtime, but now, it started in the early fall 2021. The monthly incidence among children aged 0-4 years (120 per 100,000 children) was six times higher than the second highest reported monthly incidence (21 per 100,000 children) during the last 10 years. Our finding highlights the im

Combining chest X-rays and electronic health record (EHR) data using machine learning to diagnose acute respiratory failure.

OBJECTIVE: When patients develop acute respiratory failure (ARF), accurately identifying the underlying etiology is essential for determining the best treatment. However, differentiating between common medical diagnoses can be challenging in clinical practice. Machine learning models could improve medical diagnosis by aiding in the diagnostic evaluation of these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Machine learning models were trained to predict the common causes of ARF (pneumonia, heart failure, and/or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [COPD]). Models were trained using chest radiographs and

Using Administrative Health Care Databases to Identify Patients With End-Stage Kidney Disease With No Recorded Contraindication to Receiving a Kidney Transplant.

BackgroundAdministrative health care databases can be efficiently analyzed to describe the degree to which patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) have access to kidney transplantation. Measures of access to transplantation are better represented when restricting to only those patients eligible to receive a kidney transplant. The way administrative data can be used to assess kidney transplant eligibility in the absence of clinical data has not been well described.ObjectiveTo demonstrate a method that uses administrative health care databases to identify patients with ESKD who have no rec

Assessing Engagement With Patient-Generated Health Data Recording and Its Impact on Health Behavior Changes in Multicomponent Interventions: Supplementary Analysis.

BACKGROUND: The use and sharing of patient-generated health data (PGHD) by clinicians or researchers is expected to enhance the remote monitoring of specific behaviors that affect patient health. In addition, PGHD use could support patients' decision-making on preventive care management, resulting in reduced medical expenses. However, sufficient evidence on the use and sharing of PGHD is lacking, and the impact of PGHD recording on patients' health behavior changes remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess patients' engagement with PGHD recording and to examine the impact of PGHD

Automated Computer Software Assessment of 5-Hydroxytryptamine 2A Receptor-Mediated Head Twitch Responses from Video Recordings of Mice.

Psychedelics are a class of drugs that produce unique subjective effects via agonist actions at the 5-hydroxytryptamine 2A receptor (5-HT2A). The 5-HT2A-mediated head twitch response (HTR) in rodents is used as a reliable proxy for psychedelic drug activity in humans, but existing methods for measuring HTRs require surgery or time-consuming visual scoring. In the present work, we validated a simple noninvasive method for quantitating HTRs using computer-based analysis of experimental video recordings. Male C57BL/6J mice received injections of the 5-HT2 receptor agonist (±)2,5-dimethoxy-4-iodoa

Classification-guided Neural Network-based Correction of Magnetic Resonance-related Gradient Artifact Residuals in Simultaneously Recorded Surface Electromyography.

Spontaneous muscular activities can be studied by simultaneous recordings of surface electromyography (sEMG) and diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DW-MRI). For reliable assessment of the spontaneous activity rate in sEMG data during active MR imaging, it is necessary to have a decent gradient artifact (GA) correction algorithm enabling the detection of small spontaneous activities with an amplitude of few microvolts. In this work, a neural network with weak label annotations during the training process is utilized for enhanced correction of GA residuals in the sEMG recordings. Bas

Timing of antipsychotics and benzodiazepine initiation during a first episode of psychosis impacts clinical outcomes: Electronic health record cohort study.

The impact of timing of antipsychotics and benzodiazepine treatment during a first episode of psychosis on clinical outcomes is unknown. We present a RECORD-compliant electronic health record cohort study including patients (n = 4,483, aged 14-35) with a primary diagnosis of any non-organic ICD-10 first episode of psychosis at SLAM-NHS between 2007 and 2017. The impact of antipsychotic timing (prescription > 1 week after a first episode of psychosis) was assessed on the primary outcome (risk of any psychiatric inpatient admission over 6 years), and secondary outcomes (cumulative duration of an
