Making waves: Intelligent phage cocktail design, a pathway to precise microbial control in water systems.

Current practices in water and wastewater treatment to control unwanted microbes have led to new problems, including health effects from disinfection byproducts, growth of opportunistic pathogens resistant to residual disinfectants (e.g., chlorine), and antibiotic resistance. These challenges are spurring interest in rethinking our practices of microbial control. Simultaneously, advances in molecular biology and computation power are driving renewed interest in using phages (viruses that infect bacteria) to precisely control microbial growth (aka, phage biocontrol). In this Making Waves articl

Better Healthcare Together: Co-Designing a Framework for Health Service Co-Design.

INTRODUCTION: Co-design in health services is increasingly recognised as essential for creating services and policies that address patient and community needs. However, genuine co-design can be challenging, with existing toolkits often catering to professionals, reinforcing power imbalances and limiting community leadership. This paper aims to present a novel co-design framework for health services and describe the co-design process taken in its development. METHODS: The co-design process involved a series of engagement activities (online forums, focus groups, discussions and workshops) with

A model for the design and implementation of a participant recruitment registry for clinical studies of older adults.

BACKGROUND: The identification and enlistment of suitable participants into clinical studies is often challenging, requiring a large commitment of time and staff resources. The recruitment and retention of populations typically underrepresented in research present additional challenges to enrollment of sufficient numbers of participants in clinical studies. Inadequate participation may undermine the pace and direction of new treatment discoveries. PURPOSE: Registries of potential research participants are powerful tools to support research by providing a framework to streamline screening and

Developing a peer-led approach to assess the oral health needs and experiences of people in prison and on release.

BACKGROUND: This study used a participatory research approach to develop population-specific oral health questionnaires and a peer-researcher model to explore the oral health needs and experiences of people in prison and after their release. METHODS: A two-phase co-design approach using the Double Diamond framework engaged people with lived experience of prison, dental professionals, and support workers. Phase one involved collaborative workshops to design two questionnaires: one for use in prison and one following release. A peer-researcher model was also co-designed. Phase two piloted the q

Research Priorities for Nursing and Allied Health: A Priority-Setting Project Using a Partnership Approach.

BACKGROUND: Research priorities guide research activities, funding and resources within health services. To ensure that research efforts are meaningful and impactful, it is vital that organisational research agendas reflect the priorities of both healthcare consumers and staff, alongside broader national and international research frameworks. This paper outlines a research priority-setting project conducted across two hospitals in Western Australia, aimed at identifying shared research priorities through a collaborative and inclusive approach. AIM: To identify the top ten nursing and allied h

Toward equity-oriented cancer care: a Strategy for Patient-Oriented Research (SPOR) protocol to promote equitable access to lung cancer screening.

BACKGROUND: Screening for lung cancer with low dose CT can facilitate the detection of early-stage lung cancers that are amenable to treatment, reducing mortality related to lung cancer. Individuals are considered eligible for lung cancer screening if they meet specific high-risk criteria, such as age and smoking history. Population groups that are at highest risk of lung cancer, and therefore, the target of lung cancer screening interventions, are also the least likely to participate in lung cancer screening. This can lead to a widening of health inequities. Deliberate effort is needed to bot

Fifty Years of Research on Prenatal Substances: Lessons Learned for the Opioid Epidemic.

Current efforts to design research on developmental effects of prenatal opioid exposure can benefit from knowledge gained from 50 years of studies of fetal alcohol and prenatal drug exposures such as cocaine. Scientific advances in neurobiology, developmental psychopathology, infant assessments, genetics, and imaging support the principles of developmental neurotoxicology that guide research in prenatal exposures. Important to research design is accurate assessment of amount, frequency, and timing of exposure which benefits from accurate self-report and biomarkers of exposure. Identifying and

End-user involvement in rehabilitation virtual reality implementation research.

PURPOSE: Despite increasing evidence for the effectiveness of off-the-shelf and rehabilitation-specific active video games (AVGs) and virtual reality (VR) systems for rehabilitation, clinical uptake remains poor. A better match between VR/AVG system capabilities and client/therapist needs, through improved end-user involvement (UI) in VR/AVG implementation research, may increase uptake of this technology. The purpose of this paper is to review four case examples from the authors' collective experience of including end users in VR/AVG research to identify common benefits, challenges and lessons

Mixed schwannoma with meningioma - report on 2 cases of unusual tumor with review of literature.

In order to design learning environments that foster students' research skills, one can draw on instructional design models for complex learning, such as the 4C/ID model (in: van Merriënboer and Kirschner, Ten steps to complex learning, Routledge, London, 2018). However, few attempts have been undertaken to foster students' motivation towards learning complex skills in environments based on the 4C/ID model. This study explores the effects of providing autonomy, competence and relatedness support (in Deci and Ryan, Psychol Inquiry 11(4): 227-268, https://doi.org/10.1207/S15327965PLI1104_01, 200

Emotional appraisal in gameful work design: a conceptual framework for divergent employee reactions.

Gameful work design is increasingly used to make tasks, feedback, performance systems, and workplace interaction more engaging, yet its consequences remain double-edged. Existing research has largely explained these differences in terms of motivation, technology acceptance, or performance outcomes, offering limited insight into why similar features are interpreted differently across employees and contexts. Drawing on cognitive appraisal theory and a bounded integrative evidence base of 52 publications, this conceptual analysis develops an emotional appraisal framework of gameful work design. T

Migraine heritability and beyond: A scoping review of twin studies.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review aimed to summarize current knowledge from twin studies on migraine. Migraine heritability, genetic correlations with migraine comorbid disorders, and the use of discordant twin pairs in migraine research are described. Further, the review considers the unused potential of twin studies in migraine research and reflects on future directions. BACKGROUND: Twin studies can be used to understand how heritable and environmental factors influence human traits and disorders. The classical twin design compares the resemblance of a trait in monozygotic twins to that in diz

Customizable artificial simulator for developing, planning, and training personnel on neurophysiology and surgical procedures in non-human primates.

BACKGROUND: Neuroscience researchers often surgically implant hardware into model organisms to measure and manipulate neural activity. Designing and optimizing these procedures in non-human primates often requires sedated or euthanized animals. Artificial tissue technologies can reduce animal use in this process, but existing simulators do not include all relevant tissues and do not facilitate iterative design processes. NEW METHOD: We created a comprehensive, customizable, and modular surgical simulator for neuroscience research. Our simulator incorporates artificial skull, brain, and soft t

Right versus left atrial pacing in patients with sick sinus syndrome and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (Riverleft study): study protocol for randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of sick sinus syndrome will increase due to population ageing. Consequently, this will result in an increase in the number of pacemaker implantations. The atrial lead is usually implanted in the right atrial appendage, but this position may be ineffective for prevention of atrial fibrillation. It has been suggested that pacing distally in the coronary sinus might be more successful in preventing atrial fibrillation episodes. The aim of this trial is to study the efficacy of distal coronary sinus versus right atrial appendage pacing in preventing atrial fibrillation ep

The treatment of distal radius articular fractures through lcp system.

We analysed LCP efficiency in type B and type C wrist fractures (according to the AO Classification). We treated 58 wrist fractures (19 B-type fractures and 39 C-type fractures) in 35 male and 23 female patients, aged 19 to 87 years. Forty-one cases were followed up for an average period of 13 months. We performed a volar approach on 32 patients, a dorsal approach on five, and a double approach on four (both volar and dorsal). Twenty-six cases were pre-operatively examined with CT. All patients were evaluated using the "Mayo modified wrist score", with an excellent/good result in 76% of patien

Public involvement and co-design of longitudinal studies of sleep health alongside young people with rare genetic conditions.

BACKGROUND: The mechanisms underpinning associations between sleep and psychiatric conditions are poorly understood, partly due to challenges with longitudinal sleep studies outside the laboratory. Children and young people with rare genetic conditions caused by micro-deletions or -duplications (Copy Number Variants or CNVs) have increased risk of disrupted sleep and poorer neurodevelopmental (ND) outcomes. The 'Sleep Detectives' study aims to investigate this by tracking behavioural and neurophysiological signatures of sleep health in young people with ND risk or ND-CNVs. To optimally achieve
