Cocaine Increases Sensorimotor Gating and is Related to Psychopathy.

OBJECTIVE: Prepulse inhibition regulates sensorimotor gating and is a marker of vulnerability to certain disorders. We compared prepulse inhibition, psychopathy, and sensitivity to punishment and reward in patients with cocaine-related disorder without psychiatric comorbidities and a control group. METHODS: This was an observational study of a sample of 22 male cases with cocaine-related disorder and 22 healthy male controls. We used the Psychiatric Research Interview for Substance and Mental Disorders and Mini International Neuropsychiatric Interview; the Sensitivity to Punishment and Sensit

Head circumference in infants undergoing Foker process for long-gap esophageal atresia repair: Call for attention.

INTRODUCTION: We extended our pilot study in infants following long-gap esophageal atresia (LGEA) repair to report head circumference, an easily obtainable indirect measure of brain size. Data are presented in the context of previously reported body weight and T2-weighted MRI measures of intracranial and brain volumes. METHODS: Clinical information and head circumference were obtained for term-born (n = 13) and premature (n = 13) infants following LGEA repair with Foker process, as well as healthy term-born controls (n = 20) <1-year corrected age who underwent non-sedated research MRI. Singleton-Merten syndrome: A rare cause of femoral head necrosis.

Singleton-Merten syndrome (SMS) is a type I interferonopathy. In this report, we disclose the first-to the best of our knowledge-direct association of SMS with femoral head necrosis (FHN). The following case report presents the condition of a 38-year-old male suffering from SMS with FHN, characterized by acute symptoms and rapid disease progression. As per the recommendations of the Association Research Circulation Osseous (ARCO) and the S3-guidelines, we successfully treated the FHN with core decompression. Our histological results correlate with the changes described in medical literature in

Duct of Luschka Bile Leak Following Deceased Donor Liver Transplant.

BACKGROUND Biliary leak is a relatively uncommon but potentially severe complication of liver transplantation. Duct of Luschka (also known as subvesical bile ducts) is a term that refers to a number of accessory biliary ducts. While leaks from Ducts of Luschka are well-described in the field of hepatobiliary surgery, only 2 case reports of such leaks exist in the setting of liver transplant. CASE REPORT We report the first case of a Duct of Luschka biliary leak seen after DCD liver transplant in a 41-year-old woman with cirrhosis secondary to primary sclerosing cholangitis. The patient underwe

The moderating effect of age on the associations of cognitive and metacognitive beliefs with pediatric OCD symptoms.

Although considerable research has highlighted the importance of cognitive and metacognitive beliefs in adult obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), there has been limited investigation of these beliefs in pediatric OCD. The present study investigated the clinical correlates of cognitive and metacognitive beliefs in pediatric OCD. Previous studies found positive relations between OCD symptoms and these beliefs in pediatric patients, and we hypothesized these beliefs would also be positively related to pediatric OCD symptom severity. We additionally hypothesized age would moderate these relations

Self-Reported Lifetime Concussion Among Adults: Comparison of 3 Different Survey Questions.

OBJECTIVE: Because of limitations in current national data sets, respondent self-report may be critical to obtaining concussion prevalence estimates. We examined whether self-report of lifetime concussion among adults varies with the provision of a concussion definition and by the content of that definition. SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: A convenience sample of 6427 American adults who participated in the 2018 Porter Novelli SpringStyles survey. DESIGN: Cross-sectional. MAIN MEASURES: Frequency of self-reported concussion by variation in concussion definition. RESULTS: A quarter of respondents

Weight Gain and Growth After Fundoplication in the Pediatric Patient: A Case Report in the Pediatric Patient With Cystic Fibrosis and Literature Review.

Gastroesophageal reflux (GER) is common among infants, but when symptoms become troublesome, that is defined as gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Making a diagnosis of GERD is difficult because there is no gold standard. GERD can be especially problematic for infants with cystic fibrosis (CF). There are signs and symptoms (ie, malnutrition, recurring aspiration pneumonias, refusal to eat, wheezing, coughing, and asthma) in addition to invasive and noninvasive methods used to determine a diagnosis. The treatments for GERD span from nonpharmacological to surgical, with a laparoscopic Nisse

Mosaic Neurofibromatosis Type 1 With Multiple Cutaneous Diffuse and Plexiform Neurofibromas of the Lower Leg.

BACKGROUND: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant hereditary disease with complete penetrance and a very variable phenotype. Recent research has shown that postzygotic NF1 gene mutations occur to a far greater extent than previously thought. The phenotype of affected individuals reflects the time of somatic mutation and the phenotype is correspondingly diverse. This report describes histological and genetic findings in a case of mosaic NF1, the clinical control of which documents almost stationary skin findings over a period of 9 years. CASE REPORT: The 55-year-old female fi

The History of Carbohydrates in Type I Allergy.

Although first described decades ago, the relevance of carbohydrate specific antibodies as mediators of type I allergy had not been recognized until recently. Previously, allergen specific IgE antibodies binding to carbohydrate epitopes were considered to demonstrate a clinically irrelevant cross-reactivity. However, this changed following the discovery of type I allergies specifically mediated by oligosaccharide structures. Especially the emerging understanding of red meat allergy characterized by IgE directed to the oligosaccharide alpha-gal showed that carbohydrate-mediated reactions can re

Cognitive-behavioral therapy booster treatment in pediatric obsessive-compulsive disorder: A utilization assessment pilot study.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) for pediatric obsessivecompulsive disorder (OCD) is effective, although many individuals report they need continued support after completing treatment. METHODS: Six monthly drop-in booster sessions were offered to 94 youth with OCD and their parents who previously had completed a 12-week group family-based CBT program (GF-CBT). This report describes program utilization rates and participant satisfaction levels. RESULTS: Twenty-three percent (n = 22) of invited youths with OCD attended ≥1 booster session; 63% of attendees participated in >1 sessi

Family functioning in pediatric trichotillomania, obsessive compulsive disorder, and healthy comparison youth.

Pediatric trichotillomania (TTM) is an understudied condition that can be highly impairing; little is known about family environmental features that shape its development and course. We examined family functioning among age and gender-matched groups of youth with primary TTM (n = 30; mean age = 12.87), obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD; n = 30; mean age = 12.70), and no psychiatric history (healthy controls; HC; n = 30; mean age = 12.46). An additional group of n = 25 TTM cases was employed to examine relationships between TTM severity and family functioning. All youth completed standardized

Assessing beliefs and attitudes towards antipsychotic medication from a recovery-based perspective: Psychometric properties of a new scale.

Antipsychotic medication non-adherence is a complex and multifaceted problem that may hinder recovery in psychosis-spectrum disorders. Therefore, it warrants an early and comprehensive assessment. Current self-report measures focus entirely on behavioral and attitudinal barriers to adherence, failing to provide insight about key psychosocial drivers such as shame and stigma that may also account for non-adherence. This study's main goals were to develop a brief scale for measuring antipsychotic (non)-adherence and associated intra and interpersonal barriers (Antipsychotic Medication Beliefs an

Ultrasound-Guided Corticosteroid Injection in a Patient With Tietze Syndrome Combined With Costochondral Joint Swelling.

Tietze syndrome is an uncommon disease of unknown etiology that manifests as pain and tenderness of the parasternal joints. To date, however, there has been no report on ultrasonographic findings concerning swelling of the costochondral joint in Tietze syndrome. Moreover, there has been no research investigating images of ultrasound-guided corticosteroid injection, although corticosteroid injection is one of the most important treatments for Tietze syndrome. Therefore, we report a case of Tietze syndrome where ultrasound images were used in the diagnostic and therapeutic process. A 70-yr-old m

GWAS on family history of Alzheimer's disease.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a public health priority for the 21st century. Risk reduction currently revolves around lifestyle changes with much research trying to elucidate the biological underpinnings. We show that self-report of parental history of Alzheimer's dementia for case ascertainment in a genome-wide association study of 314,278 participants from UK Biobank (27,696 maternal cases, 14,338 paternal cases) is a valid proxy for an AD genetic study. After meta-analysing with published consortium data (n = 74,046 with 25,580 cases across the discovery and replication analyses), three new A

Testing the cognitive catalyst model of rumination with explicit and implicit cognitive content.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The cognitive catalyst model posits that rumination and negative cognitive content, such as negative schema, interact to predict depressive affect. Past research has found support for this model using explicit measures of negative cognitive content such as self-report measures of trait self-esteem and dysfunctional attitudes. The present study tested whether these findings would extend to implicit measures of negative cognitive content such as implicit self-esteem, and whether effects would depend on initial mood state and history of depression. METHOD: Sixty-one un

Characterizing HIV risk among cisgender men in Latin America who report transgender women as sexual partners: HIV risk in Latin America men.

Cisgender men (CM) who report transgender women (TW) as sexual partners are an understudied population in the HIV epidemic in Latin America. The current study sought to characterize this group in a 2012 cross-sectional online survey of Latin American CM who were members of a sexual networking website for men who have sex with men (N = 11,847). Multivariable logistic regression models were fit to estimate demographic, behavioral, and psychosocial correlates of having a TW sexual partner and engaging in condomless sex. Overall, 0.9% (n = 106) reported a TW sexual partner in the last 12 months; o

Sleep disruption among cancer patients following autologous hematopoietic cell transplantation.

Despite a high prevalence of sleep disruption among hematopoietic cell transplant (HCT) recipients, relatively little research has investigated its relationships with modifiable cognitive or behavioral factors or used actigraphy to characterize sleep disruption in this population. Autologous HCT recipients who were 6-18 months post transplant completed self-report measures of cancer-related distress, fear of cancer recurrence, dysfunctional sleep cognitions, and inhibitory sleep behaviors upon enrollment. Patients then wore an actigraph for 7 days and completed a self-report measure of sleep d

Implications of thyroid autoimmunity in infertile women with subclinical hypothyroidism in the absence of both goiter and anti-thyroid antibodies: lessons from three cases.

There is a great deal of research interest regarding the underlying causes of slightly elevated TSH values in patients with subclinical hypothyroidism (SH) without abnormal findings on ultrasonography or anti-thyroid antibodies. Twelve infertile women with thyroglobulin antibody (TGAb) and thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb)-negative nongoitrous SH were referred to our department of endocrinology between September 2007 and September 2015. None had been diagnosed with autoimmune thyroid disease or had any possible causes of SH. In all cases, LT4 was prescribed to bring TSH value below 2.5 mIU/L

Unveiling Human Cardiac Fibroblast Membrane Proteome.

Cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) are one of the main cell populations in the heart and play important roles in tissue homeostasis and myocardial fibrosis. The study of these cells has been hampered by the lack of reliable membrane markers: none of the antigens currently used for characterization and isolation of CFs is unique for this cell type. This issue has also raised doubts regarding a distinct identity of cardiac fibroblasts when compared to other myocardium cell populations with similar morphologies. In this work, we report a comprehensive description and functional analysis of human CFs (hCFs

The Colombian Spanish version of the Juvenile Arthritis Multidimensional Assessment Report (JAMAR).

The Juvenile Arthritis Multidimensional Assessment Report (JAMAR) is a new parent/patient-reported outcome measure that enables a thorough assessment of the disease status in children with juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA). We report the results of the cross-cultural adaptation and validation of the parent and patient versions of the JAMAR in the Colombian Spanish language. The reading comprehension of the questionnaire was tested in ten JIA parents and patients. Each participating centre was asked to collect demographic, clinical data and the JAMAR in 100 consecutive JIA patients or all con
