The role of the dynorphin/κ opioid receptor system in anxiety.

Anxiety disorders are the most common and prevalent forms of psychiatric disease, although the biological basis of anxiety is not well understood. The dynorphin/κ opioid receptor system is widely distributed in the central nervous system and has been shown to play a critical role in modulating mood and emotional behaviors. In the present review, we summarize current literature relating to the role played by the dynorphin/κ opioid receptor system in anxiety and κ opioid receptor antagonists as potential therapeutic agents for the treatment of anxiety disorders.

Atrial natriuretic peptide presence in parotid gland of human fetus at 13th week of development and in adult man.

Our immunohistochemical study shows that atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) is present in both human fetal and adult parotid gland. In the fetuses ANP is localized in cell clusters, while in adult parotid gland, the ANP is seen only in the wall of intra- and extralobular ducts. The results suggest that ANP might play a role in the differentiation of the parotid gland similarly as in brain and that during fetal growth ANP may play a role in the regulating the secretion of primitive salivary fluid, even if acini are still not developed.

Male endocrine dysfunction.

Evaluation for endocrine function is a pivotal part of the male infertility workup. Endocrine dysfunction may result from endogenous and exogenous sources. This article describes the traditional roles that the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal endocrine axis plays in spermatogenesis and testicular dysfunction, as well as other insults that may contribute to hypospermatogenesis. Recent research into the role alternative hormonal axes play in spermatogenesis and promising new technologies that may correct inborn or acquired endocrinopathies leading to impaired sperm growth and maturation are discus

Role of neutrophils in systemic autoimmune diseases.

Neutrophils have emerged as important regulators of innate and adaptive immune responses. Recent evidence indicates that neutrophils display marked abnormalities in phenotype and function in various systemic autoimmune diseases, and may play a central role in initiation and perpetuation of aberrant immune responses and organ damage in these conditions. This review discusses the putative roles that neutrophils and aberrant neutrophil cell death play in the pathogenesis of various systemic autoimmune diseases, including systemic lupus erythematosus, small vessel vasculitis and rheumatoid arthrit

The pathogenesis of the anaemia of chronic disorders.

Anemia of chronic disorders is a typical condition of infective, immunological and neoplastic diseases. Hepcidin and proinflammatory cytokines play a leading role in its pathogenesis. Hepcidin is a hormone produced by the liver that controls iron metabolism. It ensures that iron is retained by enterocytes (where the metal is absorbed) and by macrophages (that store the iron that results from the physiological breakdown of erythrocytes). Cytokines play a role in hepcidin synthesis, and in the proliferation and the maturation of the erythroid components within bone marrow. This paper discusses t

Biofilms.

Bacterial biofilms are 3-dimensional aggregates of bacteria that have been shown to play a major role in many chronic infections. Evidence is growing that bacterial biofilms may play a role in certain cases of recalcitrant chronic sinusitis that do not respond to traditional medical and surgical therapies. Novel therapies may have clinical applications to prevent and destabilize biofilms. Future research will determine if topical antimicrobials, surfactants, and other adjuvant therapies can be used to treat biofilm-associated chronic rhinosinusitis.

Anthrax: a primary care physician's perspective.

Anthrax is a disease caused by Bacillus anthracis, a gram-positive, aerobic, spore-forming rod. It is also used as a biological weapon. The primary care physician will be the public's first line of defense in the event of a widespread anthrax exposure and will play a crucial role providing postexposure prophylaxis. Understanding the disease process will allow the primary care physician to play an essential role in protecting and educating the public. Accurate diagnosis and quick treatment will save many lives and help calm the panic following a biological attack.

Transforming growth factor-beta-like activity in tumors of the central nervous system.

Transforming growth factor type beta (TGF-beta) is a ubiquitous peptide with wide-ranging regulatory functions. This paper reports the initial isolation of TGF-beta activity from human glial and mesenchymally derived tumors and a human glial tumor cell line. While its physiological function at the molecular level is not yet defined, it is believed that this peptide plays a central role in the control of growth and transformation, with the exact role it plays being a function of the entire set of growth factors present in a given cell.

Hormonal control of gastrointestinal motility.

The motor responses of the gastrointestinal tract to a meal are tuned to provide the optimal conditions for digestion and absorption of food. Hormones released from the mucosa of the intestinal tract play an important role in regulating and integrating the various motor events which occur. Complex feedbacks, both nervous and humoral, control the release of intestinal hormones and also modify their actions. Preliminary studies suggest that abnormalities in the secretion or action of various gastrointestinal hormones may play an important role in the production of motor disorders of the gastroin

Tetrahydrocannabinol and dopamine D1 receptor.

Dopamine is a hormone that is released by the adrenal gland and influences motor control and motivation. Dopamine is known to have 5 receptors which are D1, D2, D3, D4 and D5, which are further categorized into 2 families: D1 family and D2 family. The D1 family is known to play a role in motivation and motor control whereas the D2 family is known to affect attention and sleep. THC, a type of cannabinoid, can lead to feelings of euphoria, anxiety, fear, distrust, or panic. THC is known to affect dopamine in regions such as the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), and plays a role in fundamental cog

The Role of Short-Chain Fatty Acids in Myocardial Ischemia-Reperfusion Injury.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This study aims to review the effects of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) in regulating the myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury (MIRI). RECENT FINDINGS: Coronary heart disease (CHD) is a well-known leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Cardiac substrate metabolism plays the determinant role in assessing the severity of heart injury due to the abruptly shifted energy production during the MIRI. Fatty acids are the main energy fuels for the heart, which are classified into long-, medium- and short chain fatty acids by the length of carbon chain. SCFAs are the mai

(Pro)renin receptor signaling in hypothalamic tyrosine hydroxylase neurons is required for obesity-associated glucose metabolic impairment.

Glucose homeostasis is achieved via complex interactions between the endocrine pancreas and other peripheral tissues and glucoregulatory neurocircuits in the brain that remain incompletely defined. Within the brain, neurons in the hypothalamus appear to play a particularly important role. Consistent with this notion, we report evidence that (pro)renin receptor (PRR) signaling within a subset of tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) neurons located in the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVNTH neurons) is a physiological determinant of the defended blood glucose level. Specifically, we demonstrate tha

Ubiquitin-conjugating enzyme E2 for regulating autophagy in diabetic cardiomyopathy: A mini-review.

The prevalence of diabetic cardiomyopathy (DCM) increases year by year with the increase in the prevalence of diabetes mellitus (DM), which is one of the most serious cardiovascular complications of DM and a major cause of death in diabetic patients. Although the pathological molecular features of DCM have not been fully elucidated, increasing evidence suggests that impaired autophagy in cardiomyocytes plays a nonnegligible role in the development of DCM. It has been shown that SUMOylation [SUMO = small ubiquitin-like modifier], a post-translational modification of proteins, and its associated

Circadian-Coupled Genes Expression and Regulation in HIV-Associated Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Lung Comorbidities.

People living with HIV (PLWH) have an elevated risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and are at a higher risk of asthma and worse outcomes. Even though the combination of antiretroviral therapy (cART) has significantly improved the life expectancy of HIV-infected patients, it still shows a higher incidence of COPD in patients as young as 40 years old. Circadian rhythms are endogenous 24 h oscillations that regulate physiological processes, including immune responses. Additionally, they play a significant role in health and diseases by regulating viral replication and its corresp

Intolerance to occlusion during carotid artery stenting with proximal protection: causes, mechanisms, treatment and prevention.

Periprocedural cerebral microembolization is the most important complication of carotid artery stenting. Among several variables that play a role to reduce this risk, brain protection (proximal vs. distal) plays a pivot role. Data are accumulating in favor of a better performance of proximal vs. distal especially in symptomatic patients and high-risk carotid plaques. A prerequisite for the technique to be safe and effective is the presence of a valid intracranial collateral circulation to compensate for the target vessel hemisphere avoiding patient intolerance. This complication may occur eith

Soluble guanylyl cyclase: Molecular basis for ligand selectivity and action in vitro and in vivo.

Nitric oxide (NO), carbon monoxide (CO), oxygen (O2), hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are gaseous molecules that play important roles in the physiology and pathophysiology of eukaryotes. Tissue concentrations of these physiologically relevant gases vary remarkable from nM range for NO to high μM range of O2. Various hemoproteins play a significant role in sensing and transducing cellular signals encoded by gaseous molecules or in transporting them. Soluble guanylyl cyclase (sGC) is a hemoprotein that plays vital roles in a wide range of physiological functions and combines the functions of gaseous sens

Association of cervicovaginal dysbiosis mediated HPV infection with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia.

Cellular transformation to malignancy is a multifactorial process strongly linked with microbiome dysbiosis. The female reproductive tract (FRT) is inhabited by specific Lactobacillus spp which play a significant role in maintaining a homeostatic balance and providing resistance to perturbation. Any imbalance in the resident microbiota of the FRT results in cervicovaginal dysbiosis and increased predisposition to viral and bacterial infections. In the present review, we discuss the critical role played by the cervicovaginal microbiome in maintaining cervicovaginal homeostasis. Loss of the mutu

Mitochondrial bioenergetics and cardiolipin alterations in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury: implications for pharmacological cardioprotection.

Mitochondrial dysfunction plays a central role in myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury. Increased reactive oxygen species production, impaired electron transport chain activity, aberrant mitochondrial dynamics, Ca2+ overload, and opening of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore have been proposed as major contributory factors to mitochondrial dysfunction during myocardial I/R injury. Cardiolipin (CL), a mitochondria-specific phospholipid, plays a pivotal role in multiple mitochondrial bioenergetic processes, including respiration and energy conversion, in mitochondrial morphol

Maxillary fungus ball: zinc-oxide endodontic materials as a risk factor.

The objective of this study was to demonstrate the correlation between endodontic treatment on maxillary teeth and fungus ball with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry measurement of zinc and other metals (barium, lead and copper) in fungus ball samples. Samples of normal maxillary mucosa were used as comparison. Metal concentration was also measured in several endodontic materials. A significant difference was found between the concentration of zinc and copper in fungus ball compared to normal mucosa. Metal distribution was more similar in fungus ball and in the endodontic materials
