Effects of trunk muscle strength training on lung function in healthy runners.

BACKGROUND: Abdominal pressure is important for athlete performance and conditioning, and lung function is implicated in running performance and economy. We aimed to determine the synergistic effects of trunk muscle strength training on abdominal pressure and lung function in university student runners. METHODS: A total of 18 healthy male runners participated in the study. Abdominal pressure was measured against air pressure applied by a cuff belt wrapped around the trunk. Forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) and FEV in 6 seconds (FEV6) were measured. Trunk muscle strength training was

No evidence for top-down expertise effects on action perception in sprinters using static images.

Athletes have been found to demonstrate a superior ability to detect subtle variations in dynamic displays (e.g., point-light displays and videos) depicting expert actions compared to non-athletes. The current study aimed to determine whether this advantage also exists when dynamic information is unavailable (i.e., using static images). Using a staircase procedure, two frames from a video depicting an athlete either walking (everyday action) or performing a sprint start (expert action) were presented, and athletes (sprinters) and non-athletes were asked to indicate whether the images were iden

The effects of ambient air pollution exposure on Thoroughbred racehorse performance.

BACKGROUND: Limited research exists on impacts of air pollution on non-human mammals, particularly animal athletes such as Thoroughbred racehorses. Athletes have a greater risk of exposure as heightened exertion and increased airflow carry more pollutants deeper into the respiratory tract. OBJECTIVES: To provide insights into the impact of ambient air pollution, particularly fine particulate matter (PM2.5), on race speed. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective observational study. METHODS: Data were obtained from The Jockey Club Information Systems, covering 31 407 winning races by Thoroughbred horses

Exceptional exercise capacity in a late bloomer octogenarian triathlete.

Maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O<inf>2max</inf>) gradually declines across the lifespan. However, little is known about the octogenarians. This is a knowledge gap given that individuals living >80 years old is the fastest expanding age-group world-wide. The increase in the elderly population has generated greater awareness in healthy ageing including psychosocial, physical, and cognitive domains, all of which benefit from engagement in physical activity or sport. In the present article are reported characteristics of an octogenarian man (GM), starting training for triathlon when he was 75 years old.

Warm-Up in Triathlon: Do Triathletes Follow the Scientific Guidelines?

PURPOSE: Warming up before competition is universally recognized as an effective way to enhance performance. However, only a few articles have directly investigated different warm-up strategies adopted by triathletes and suggested by coaches. The Olympic-distance triathlon is an endurance competition characterized, at least for the elite, by a fast start with a strong correlation to the final position in the race. Thus, executing a proper warm-up protocol would be beneficial in optimizing performance. The present study aimed to provide an overview of the warm-up protocol adopted/suggested by n

Development of a questionnaire to assess dietary restrictions runners use to mitigate gastrointestinal symptoms.

BACKGROUND: Exercise induced gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms can plague athletes, especially runners. Sport nutrition recommendations are nutrient rather than foods focused and do not adequately address strategies to reduce GI symptoms. The objective was to develop a valid and reliable questionnaire to evaluate pre-training and pre-racing voluntary food restrictions/choices, reasons for avoiding foods, and gastrointestinal symptoms in endurance runners. METHODS: Validity testing occurred through four Registered Dietitians, three of whom possess Master's degrees, and a dietetic trainee who prov

Cold-Water Immersion Cooling Rates in Football Linemen and Cross-Country Runners With Exercise-Induced Hyperthermia.

CONTEXT: Ideal and acceptable cooling rates in hyperthermic athletes have been established in average-sized participants. Football linemen (FBs) have a small body surface area (BSA)-to-mass ratio compared with smaller athletes, which hinders heat dissipation. OBJECTIVE: To determine cooling rates using cold-water immersion in hyperthermic FBs and cross-country runners (CCs). DESIGN: Cohort study. SETTING: Controlled university laboratory. PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS: Nine FBs (age = 21.7 ± 1.7 years, height = 188.7 ± 4 cm, mass = 128.1 ± 18 kg, body fat = 28.9% ± 7.1%, lean body mass [L

The association between eccentric hip abduction strength and hip and knee angular movements in recreational male runners: An explorative study.

Weak hip abductors may be related with increased hip adduction and knee abduction angular movement, which may be risk factors of lower extremity injuries. As the role of eccentric hip abduction strength (EHAS) on hip adduction angular movement and knee abduction angular movement (KABD) remains unclear, the purpose of this study was to explore the association between EHAS and hip and knee angular movement. In 100 healthy male recreational runners, EHAS was quantified using an isokinetic dynamometer, while hip and knee angular movements were collected using pressure-sensitive treadmill and Codam

A curious case of stress fracture in a transsexual athlete.

Femoral neck stress fractures in young healthy individuals are rare and occur in those who take part in physical training with repetitive loading and those with osteoporosis. Bone density is related to sex hormone status, which is artificially manipulated during gender reassignment. Conflicting evidence currently exists on the effect of cross sex hormone treatment on bone density, with no literature suggesting a link between hormone treatment in gender reassignment and stress fractures. Our aim is to highlight the potential risk of stress fractures amongst transsexual patients receiving cross

PBMCs express a transcriptome signature predictor of oxygen uptake responsiveness to endurance exercise training in men.

Peripheral blood cells are an accessible environment in which to visualize exercise-induced alterations in global gene expression patterns. We aimed to identify a peripheral blood mononuclear cell (PBMC) signature represented by alterations in gene expression, in response to a standardized endurance exercise training protocol. In addition, we searched for molecular classifiers of the variability in oxygen uptake (V̇o2). Healthy untrained policemen recruits (n = 13, 25 ± 3 yr) were selected. Peak V̇o2 (measured by cardiopulmonary exercise testing) and total RNA from PBMCs were obtained before a
