Viral infections are often associated with salivary gland pathology. Here we review the pathogenesis of HIV-associated salivary gland disease (HIV-SGD), a hallmark of diffuse infiltrative lymphocytosis syndrome. We investigate the presence and contributions of viral diseases to the pathogenesis of salivary gland diseases, particularly HIV-SGD. This report summarizes the spread of a raccoon rabies epizootic into New York in the 1990s, the species of animals affected, and human postexposure treatments (PET). A total of 57,008 specimens were submitted to the state laboratory from 1993 to 1998; 8,858 (16%) animals were confirmed rabid, with raccoons the most common species (75%). After exposure to 11,769 animals, 18,238 (45%) persons received PET, mostly because of contact with saliva or nervous tissue. METHODS: The SMGs of 19 patients with severe keratoconjunctivitis were transferred to their temporal region by microsurgery. In June 2000, a case of rabies was diagnosed in Stockholm. The patient, a 19-year-old woman, had been bitten by a dog in Thailand three months earlier. She was admitted with a 2-day history of pain and paresthesia at the exposure site (right arm), along with anxiety.
