Spicy food and self-reported fractures.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Population-based evidence that suggests health effects of spicy consumptions on fracture was scant. The study aimed to explore the association of spicy food intake with self-reported history of fractures in the Chinese populations. METHODS: Data was drawn from the baseline survey of a large cohort study conducted in China between 2004 and 2008. A total of 512,891 adults (including 302,632 females) were included. Frequency, strength and duration of spicy food consumption were assessed using a survey questionnaire. Fracture history was self-reported based on physician's diagn

Efficacy of cinnamon in patients with type II diabetes mellitus: A randomized controlled clinical trial.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Multiple studies have evaluated the hypoglycemic effect of cinnamon in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) type II, with conflicting results. Differences in Baseline Body Mass Index (BMI) of patients may be able to explain the observed differences in the results. This study was designed to evaluate the effect of cinnamon supplementation on anthropometric, glycemic and lipid outcomes of patients with DM type II based on their baseline BMI. METHODS: The study was designed as a triple-blind placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial, using a parallel design. One hundred and

Effectiveness of nutritional interventions in older adults at risk of malnutrition across different health care settings: Pooled analyses of individual participant data from nine randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Protein-energy malnutrition is a health concern among older adults. Improving nutritional status by increasing energy and protein intake likely benefits health. We therefore aimed to investigate effects of nutritional interventions in older adults (at risk of malnutrition) on change in energy intake and body weight, and explore if the intervention effect was modified by study or participants' characteristics, analysing pooled individual participant data. METHODS: We searched for RCTs investigating the effect of dietary counseling, oral nutritional supplements (ONS) or both

A food-based score and incidence of overweight/obesity: The Dietary Obesity-Prevention Score (DOS).

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Given the enormous health, economic and societal consequences of the obesity pandemic, identifying effective primary prevention strategies represents a global priority. The aim of this study was to provide evidence on the association between adherence to a food-based score reflecting a set of targeted, well-informed, simple dietary recommendations and the incidence of overweight/obesity. METHODS: A total of 11,349 initially free of overweight/obesity young adults (mean [SD] age: 34.7 y [10.7]), were followed up biennially during a median of 9.3 years. The Dietary Obesity-Pr

Liver lipid metabolism disruption in cancer cachexia is aggravated by cla supplementation -induced inflammation.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: The liver is the main organ regulating metabolism. In spite of that, few studies examine liver metabolism in cachexia, a wasting syndrome associated with increased morbidity and mortality in cancer. Cachexia induces major metabolic disruption, inflammation and fat and lean mass loss. We have previously shown impairment of hepatic lipid metabolism in cancer cachexia that contributes to the aggravation of the symptoms. The present study addresses the effects of Conjugated Linoleic Acid supplementation upon liver lipid metabolism in cachectic rats. METHODS: Male Wistar rats we

Cross sectional imaging of truncal and quadriceps muscles relates to different functional outcomes in cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Following the consensus definition of cancer cachexia, more studies are using CT scan analysis of truncal muscles as a marker of muscle wasting. However, how CT-derived body composition relates to function, strength and power in patients with cancer is largely unknown. AIMS: We aimed to describe the relationship between CT truncal (L3) skeletal muscle index (SMI) and MRI quadriceps cross sectional area with lower limb strength, power and measures of complex function. METHODS: Patients undergoing assessment for potentially curative surgery for oesophagogastric or pancreatic canc

Poor nutritional status but not cognitive or functional impairment per se independently predict 1 year mortality in elderly patients with hip-fracture.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Hip fractures are strongly associated with mortality in the elderly. Studies investigating predisposing factors have suggested a negative impact of poor nutritional, cognitive and functional status on patient survival, however their independent prognostic impact as well as their interactions remain undefined. This study aimed to determine whether poor nutritional status independently predicts 1 year post-fracture mortality after adjusting for cognitive and functional status and for other clinically relevant covariates. METHODS: 1211 surgically treated hip fracture elderly (

The fat mass index, not the fat-free mass index, is associated with impaired physical performance in older adult subjects: Evidence from a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Impaired physical performance (IPP) and physical disability (PD) are two serious public health problems in older adult populations worldwide. While studies show that changes in body composition are important risk factors for developing these conditions, there is little evidence that the fat-free mass (FFM) and fat mass (FM) indices (FFMI and FMI, respectively) are associated with IPP in older men and women. This study assessed the association among FFMI, FMI, and IPP using Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) in Mexican men and women aged over 60 years. METHODS: This cross-se

Temporal changes of major protein concentrations in preterm and term human milk. A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Proteins are major contributors to the beneficial effects of human milk (HM) on preterm infant health and development. Alpha-lactalbumin, lactoferrin, serum albumin and caseins represent approximately 85% of the total HM protein. The temporal changes of these proteins in preterm (PT) HM and its comparison with term (T) HM is poorly characterized. AIMS: To quantify and compare the temporal changes of the major proteins in PT HM and T HM. METHODS: HM was collected for 4 months postpartum at 12 time points for PT HM (gestational age 28 0/7-32 6/7 weeks; 280 samples) and for 2 months

Clinical approach to the management of Intestinal Failure Associated Liver Disease (IFALD) in adults: A position paper from the Home Artificial Nutrition and Chronic Intestinal Failure Special Interest Group of ESPEN.

We recommend that intestinal failure associated liver disease (IFALD) should be diagnosed by the presence of abnormal liver function tests and/or evidence of radiological and/or histological liver abnormalities occurring in an individual with IF, in the absence of another primary parenchymal liver pathology (e.g. viral or autoimmune hepatitis), other hepatotoxic factors (e.g. alcohol/medication) or biliary obstruction. The presence or absence of sepsis should be noted, along with the duration of PN administration. Abnormal liver histology is not mandatory for a diagnosis of IFALD and the decis

Drug use is associated with lower plasma magnesium levels in geriatric outpatients; possible clinical relevance.

BACKGROUND: Hypomagnesemia has been associated with diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and other disorders. Drug use has been suggested as one of the risk factors for low magnesium (Mg) levels. In the elderly population, prone to polypharmacy and inadequate Mg intake, hypomagnesemia might be relevant. Therefore, we aimed to investigate associations between drug use and plasma Mg. METHODS: Cross-sectional data of 343 Dutch geriatric outpatients were analysed by Cox and linear regression, while adjusting for covariates. Drug groups were coded according to the Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical clas

Does intravenous fish oil affect the growth of extremely low birth weight preterm infants on parenteral nutrition?

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Long chain n-3 fatty acids (n-3 LCPUFA) play a pivotal role during central nervous system development and the provision of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is recommended for the preterm infant. However, there are concerns that oral fish oil, which is a good source of DHA, may adversely affect growth of preterm infants, as it decreases arachidonic acid (ARA). It has been about ten years since fish oil was added to the fat blend of intravenous (IV) lipid emulsions (LE) but information on growth and other clinical outcomes of preterm infants is still scarce. We studied the effect of
