Interventions and Perinatal Outcomes Associated With Recipient Twin Cardiomyopathy in the Setting of Twin-To-Twin Transfusion Syndrome: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: To determine (1) Whether the presence and severity of recipient twin cardiomyopathy in the setting of twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome are associated with worse perinatal outcomes when compared to recipient twins without evidence of cardiomyopathy and (2) The optimal management strategy to reduce the likelihood of adverse perinatal outcomes when recipient twin cardiomyopathy is present. METHODS: We included observational studies and randomized controlled trials of monochorionic-diamniotic twin gestations affected by twin-to-twin transfusion syndrome, which reported the relationshi

Association Between Low Vitamin D Levels and Depression: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Depression is a globally prevalent, biologically heterogeneous condition for which standard pharmacotherapy fails approximately one-third of patients. Vitamin D receptors (VDRs) and the biosynthetic enzyme CYP27B1 are expressed in limbic cortical neurons, and calcitriol up-regulates tryptophan hydroxylase 2 (TPH2), the rate-limiting enzyme in central serotonin synthesis. These observations suggest a plausible biological mechanism linking serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] deficiency to depression risk. Prior meta-analyses have pooled cross-sectional and longitudinal designs indiscriminately,

GC content mismatch of transgene destabilizes RNA virus genomes.

GC content-the proportion of guanine and cytosine nucleotides-varies widely among organisms and viruses. Although GC content is recognized to have biological significance, its functional role in viruses remains poorly understood. Here, we examined the impact of GC-content bias using three positive-sense single-stranded RNA viruses with distinct GC profiles: severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV), and hepatitis C virus (HCV). Variants of the NanoLuc (Nluc) reporter gene, engineered with synonymous mutations to alter GC content, were inser

A comparative meta-analysis of seven types of exercise-based physical therapy for gait stabilization, fall risk, and postural control in Parkinson's disease patients.

BackgroundPatients with Parkinson's disease (PD) often experience impaired gait stabilization, increased risk of falls, and postural control disorders. Although drug and surgical treatments can partially alleviate symptoms, non-pharmacological interventions (such as physical therapy) have become a research focus due to their safety and multi-system benefits. This study used a network meta-analysis to compare the efficacy of seven types of physical therapy in improving motor dysfunction in PD patients.MethodsThe system searched databases such as PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, the Cochrane Libr

Hypofractionated vs. single-session Gamma Knife radiosurgery for orbital cavernous hemangiomas: A systematic review, meta-analysis, and institutional case series.

BACKGROUND: Orbital cavernous hemangiomas (OCH) are rare benign vascular tumors that pose therapeutic challenges due to their proximity to critical visual structures. While surgical resection remains the standard of care, Gamma Knife radiosurgery (GKRS) has emerged as a minimally invasive alternative. However, the optimal fractionation strategy, single-session versus hypofractionated treatment, remains unclear. This review aims to evaluate the clinical and radiological outcomes of single-session versus hypofractionated GKRS for OCH through a systematic review, meta-analysis, and a complementar

Association Between Ambient Air Pollution and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) in Children: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

The objective of this systematic review and meta-analysis was to assess the association between postnatal exposure to ambient air pollutants (particulate matter (PM)2.5, PM10, nitrogen dioxide (NO2)) and the risk of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in children. Observational studies, including cohort, case-control, and cross-sectional designs, that examined the relationship between postnatal exposure to ambient air pollution and ADHD in children were included, while studies focusing on prenatal exposure or unrelated neurodevelopmental outcomes were excluded. A comprehensive sear

Is hormonal manipulation after surgical treatment of catamenial pneumothorax effective in reducing the rate of recurrence? A systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVES: Catamenial pneumothorax CP is a rare form of spontaneous pneumothorax in females forming part of thoracic endometriosis syndrome. Studies have suggested possible benefit from postoperative hormonal administration. As this treatment is inconsistent, we aimed at performing the first meta-analysis to study the efficacy of adding hormonal treatment after surgery to reduce the chances of recurrent catamenial pneumothorax. METHODS: CENTRAL, MEDLINE/PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Scopus were systematically searched from inception up to December 15, 2021. Studies reporting five or more pat

Feasibility, Reproducibility, and Prognostic Value of Fully Automated Measurement of Right Ventricular Longitudinal Strain.

BACKGROUND: Right ventricular free wall longitudinal strain (RVFWLS) carries important diagnostic and prognostic significance in a variety of clinical settings, but its measurement is time consuming and operator dependent, limiting its value in routine clinical practice. Automated RVFWLS measurements can overcome these limitations. The purpose of this study was to determine the feasibility, reproducibility, and prognostic implications of automated RVFWLS compared with manual assessment of RVFWLS. METHODS: A total of 206 patients with a wide range of right ventricular (RV) function were retros

Percutaneous Versus Surgical Insertion of Peritoneal Dialysis Catheters: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Home-based peritoneal dialysis (PD) is an alternative to facility-based hemodialysis and has lower costs and greater freedom for patients with kidney failure. For a patient to undergo PD, a safe and reliable method of accessing the peritoneum is needed. However, different catheter insertion techniques may affect patient health outcomes. OBJECTIVE: To compare the risk of infectious and mechanical complications between surgical (open and laparoscopic) PD catheter insertion and percutaneous catheter insertion. DESIGN: Systematic review and meta-analysis. SETTING: We searched for ob

Evaluating feasibility of ferritin assay harmonisation with commutable proof-of-concept reference materials and EQA-based monitoring.

OBJECTIVES: Clinical interpretation of ferritin is hindered by between-assay differences, persisting despite the introduction of different generations of WHO standard. To aid harmonisation efforts, this study investigates the commutability of External Quality Assessment (EQA) materials, proof-of-concept reference materials (cRMs), and the newest generation of WHO standard (19/118). METHODS: Four multi-level serum-based cRMs, 50 clinical samples, four EQA materials, and WHO 19/118 were measured with Abbott Alinity, Beckman Coulter Access DxI, Roche Cobas and Siemens Atellica. Commutability was

Trigeminal Neuralgia in Multiple Sclerosis: A Critical Review of the Therapeutic Evidence and the Role of Cerebellopontine Angle Surgical Exploration.

BACKGROUND: Trigeminal neuralgia associated with multiple sclerosis (TN-MS) is a secondary facial pain syndrome whose clinical and therapeutic features differ substantially from those of classical TN. Although the literature comparing treatment outcomes between TN-MS and classical TN is relatively abundant, evidence on the impact of treatment on quality of life in TN-MS is scarce. In patients with MS-already vulnerable owing to the course of their disease and the burden of its treatments-therapeutic success cannot be defined by pain scales alone, because even modest analgesic improvement and,

Ethical issues in conducting health research with people in prison: Results of a deliberative research project conducted with people in Australian prisons.

Planning research involving people in prison raises concerns based on past abuses of incarcerated people amongst other factors. Despite the development of guidelines for the ethical conduct of research in prisons, researchers and advocates have questioned whether current approaches aimed at protecting incarcerated persons from unethical research unfairly exclude this group from participating in and benefitting from research. Discussion of these issues comes mostly from expert opinion. An absent voice is that of people in prison. This study identifies the key ethical issues according to people

More help than harm: surgery for metastatic spinal cord compression is associated with more favorable overall survival within a propensity score analysis.

PURPOSE: Indication for surgical decompression in metastatic spinal cord compression (MSCC) is often based on prognostic scores such as the modified Bauer score (mBs), with favorable prognosis suggestive of surgery and poor prognosis of non-surgical management. This study aimed to clarify if (1) surgery may directly affect overall survival (OS) aside from short-term neurologic outcome, (2) explore whether selected patient subgroups with poor mBs might still benefit from surgery, and (3) gauge putative adverse effects of surgery on short-term oncologic outcomes. METHODS: Single-center propensi
