The association and contribution of gender-related characteristics to prevalent chronic kidney disease in women and men in a multi-ethnic population - The HELIUS study.

In chronic kidney disease (CKD), prevalence differences between sexes have been reported. While biological factors have been investigated, research on sociocultural factors is scarce. We explore the extent gender-related characteristics associate with, and contribute to, CKD prevalence in women and men in a multi-ethnic population. Cross-sectional analyses were performed on data of 12,221 women and 8,930 men aged 18-70 years across six ethnic groups from the HELIUS Study. Using age-, education-, and ethnicity adjusted Poisson regression, we determined associations between time spent on housewo

Time-space analysis of gastrointestinal cancers among the working-age individuals in Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa (BRICS)-plus countries (1990-2021): a comprehensive analysis from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2021.

BACKGROUND: Gastrointestinal (GI) cancers remain a major public health concern worldwide. However, limited evidence exists on the burden and trends of these cancers among the economically active population in BRICS-plus countries, including Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. This study aimed to assess the long-term patterns and current status of 6 major GI cancers among working-age adults (20-64 years) across these countries between 1990 and 2021. METHODS: This study used data from the Global Burden of Disease Study 2

Determining the influential factors of postnatal care in Bangladesh using multilevel logistic regression.

BACKGROUND: Postnatal care (PNC) is the care of a newborn and mother for up to six weeks from one hour of placenta birth. The postnatal period is one of the most hazardous stages for mothers and their baby's health. The PNC is influenced by several maternal, family, biological, and socio-economic factors and it is necessary to identify the most significant factors of PNC. Therefore, the authors focus on determining the significant determinants of postnatal care in Bangladesh. METHODS AND MATERIALS: This study is based on a secondary dataset extracted from the Bangladesh Demographic and Health

Contraceptive use and pregnancy outcomes among opioid drug-using women: a retrospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: The contraceptive needs of illicit opioid users differ from non-drug users but are poorly understood. The aim of this study was to describe contraceptive use and pregnancy outcomes in opioid-using women, and to examine their association with a range of risk factors. METHOD: This retrospective cohort study used UK general practice records, Treatment Outcomes Profile and National Drug Treatment Monitoring System data, and a nested data validation exercise. A cohort of 376 women aged 20-61 years were in active treatment for opioid addiction in October 2010 at two specialised primary c

Sexuality in spondyloarthritis--the impact of the disease.

INTRODUCTION: The impact of rheumatic diseases on patients' sexual life has been gathering the attention of the scientific community over the last decade. The existing studies are scarce, especially related to spondyloarthritis, and particularly to psoriatic arthritis. Several factors associated with the disease may condition sexual function: pain, stiffness, decreased range of motion, joint swelling and extraarticular features such as fatigue, enthesopathy and cutaneous lesions in psoriatic arthritis. OBJECTIVES: To assess sexual satisfaction and limitations in sexual activity in a cohort of

Low blood long chain omega-3 fatty acids in UK children are associated with poor cognitive performance and behavior: a cross-sectional analysis from the DOLAB study.

BACKGROUND: Omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA), especially DHA (docosahexaenonic acid) are essential for brain development and physical health. Low blood Omega-3 LC-PUFA have been reported in children with ADHD and related behavior/learning difficulties, as have benefits from dietary supplementation. Little is known, however, about blood fatty acid status in the general child population. We therefore investigated this in relation to age-standardized measures of behavior and cognition in a representative sample of children from mainstream schools. PARTICIPANTS: 493 school

What physicians want to learn about sickness certification: analyses of questionnaire data from 4019 physicians.

BACKGROUND: Sickness absence is a problem in many Western countries. Physicians have an essential role in sickness certification of patients, which is often recommended in health care but may have side effects. Despite the potentially harming impact of sickness absence, physicians have very limited training in insurance medicine, and there is little research on sickness certification practices. Our aim was to ascertain what knowledge and skills physicians in different clinical settings feel they need in order to improve their competence in sickness certification. METHODS: The data for analysi

A proteomics informed by transcriptomics insight into the proteome of Ornithodoros erraticus adult tick saliva.

BACKGROUND: The argasid tick Ornithodoros erraticus is the main vector of tick-borne human relapsing fever (TBRF) and African swine fever (ASF) in the Mediterranean Basin. The prevention and control of these diseases would greatly benefit from the elimination of O. erraticus populations, and anti-tick vaccines are envisaged as an effective and sustainable alternative to chemical acaricide usage for tick control. Ornithodoros erraticus saliva contains bioactive proteins that play essential functions in tick feeding and host defence modulation, which may contribute to host infection by tick-born

Physical function-derived cut-points for the diagnosis of sarcopenia and dynapenia from the Canadian longitudinal study on aging.

BACKGROUND: Aging is associated with sarcopenia (low muscle mass) and dynapenia (low muscle strength) leading to disability and mortality. Widely used previous cut-points for sarcopenia were established from dated, small, or pooled cohorts. We aimed to identify cut-points of low strength as a determinant of impaired physical performance and cut-points of low appendicular lean mass (ALM) as a predictor of low strength in a single, large, and contemporary cohort of community-dwelling older adults and compare these criteria with others. METHODS: Cross-sectional analyses were conducted on baselin

An assessment of emotional pain among subjects with chronic dermatological problems in Lagos, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: In dermatology, it is known that there is a significant co-morbidity between dermatological disorders and psychological complications, and it has been estimated that in at least one-third of patients with skin diseases, their effective management involves consideration of associated emotional factors. In Africa, particularly Nigeria, despite the prevalent dermatological disorders with their possible attendant mental health complications, little or no work has been done in the field of psycho-dermatology, hence the rationale for this study. METHODS: A prospective study was carried

BLA kappa opioid receptor inputs to the BNST mediate social stress-induced increases in alcohol drinking.

Aversive social experiences can increase alcohol consumption and precipitate relapse during abstinence. Individuals who drink to alleviate social stress are at a heightened risk for developing an alcohol use disorder (AUD). In rodents, repeated social defeat stress (SDS) enhances motivation to consume alcohol, yet the underlying neural mechanisms remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the role of dynorphin/kappa opioid receptor (Dyn/KOR) signaling in regulating stress-induced increases in alcohol consumption. We show that repeated SDS increased alcohol intake and preference in both se

Absence of anti-HEV antibodies in donkeys in Algeria: a first serological survey.

Paslahepevirus balayani (Hepatitis E virus, HEV) is an emerging zoonotic pathogen with a wide host range, yet its circulation in African equids remains poorly understood. This study provides the first serological investigation of HEV in donkeys in Algeria, aiming to assess exposure levels and identify potential infection-related risk factors. Between 2019 and 2024, 183 donkeys were sampled across three northeastern provinces (Mila, Souk-Ahras, and Tébessa), representing diverse agroecological conditions and including both working donkeys and animals used in cross-border smuggling. Individual d

The role of social determinants in COVID-19 hospitalization disparities by migration status in Stockholm, Sweden. A population-based cohort study.

BackgroundImmigrants in Sweden, particularly those from low- and middle-income countries, had higher risks of COVID-19 mortality and morbidity compared to the Swedish-born. However, prior studies have not quantified the contribution of the differential distribution of health and social determinants to the increased risks.MethodsWe used total population registers from Sweden to investigate disparities in COVID-19 hospitalization between five groups of immigrants and Swedish-born, using a cohort 577911 working-age adults (18-65 years) living in Stockholm during the first two waves of the COVID-1

Kölliker's Organ Functions as a Developmental Hub in Mouse Cochlea Regulating Spiral Limbus and Tectorial Membrane Development.

Kölliker's organ is a transient developmental structure in the mouse cochlea that undergoes significant remodeling postnatally. Utilizing an epithelial-specific conditional deletion mouse model of Prdm16 (marker and regulator of Kölliker's organ), we show that Prdm16 is required for interdental cell development, and thereby the development of the limbal domain of the tectorial membrane and its medial anchorage to the spiral limbus. Additionally, we show that Kölliker's organ is involved in normal tectorial membrane collagen fibril development and maturation. Interestingly, mesenchymal cells of
