Repeated treatment with oxytocin promotes hippocampal cell proliferation, dendritic maturation and affects socio-emotional behavior.

Rewarding social behaviors including positive social interactions and sexual behaviors are shown to regulate adult neurogenesis, but the underlying biological mechanisms remain elusive. Oxytocin, a neurohypophysial hormone secreted after exposure to social interaction or sexual behaviors, has a profound role in the formation of social bonding and regulation of emotional distress. While the acute effect of oxytocin was usually studied, relatively scarce evidence showed the behavioral consequence of repeated oxytocin treatment. The purpose of the current study was to investigate the effect of re

Bullying victimization in adolescence and psychotic symptomatology in adulthood: evidence from a 35-year study.

BACKGROUND: There has been considerable recent interest in possible causal linkages between exposure to bullying victimization and later psychotic symptomatology. Prior research in this area has had several limitations which make it difficult to ascertain causality, and to determine the extent to which these effects extend beyond adolescence. METHOD: Data were obtained from the Christchurch Health and Development Study, a 35-year study of a longitudinal birth cohort. This investigation used generalized estimating equation modelling to estimate the associations between bullying victimization (

Hypertension overrides the protective effect of female hormones on the development of aortic aneurysm secondary to Alk5 deficiency via ERK activation.

The prevalence of aortic aneurysm is five times higher in men than women among the general population. Similar sexual dimorphism also exists in syndromic aortic aneurysms triggered by TGF-β signaling disorders. To understand the responsible mechanisms, we developed an animal model where inducible deletion of the type I TGF-β receptor, Alk5, specifically in smooth muscle cells (Alk5iko) causes spontaneous aortic aneurysm formation. This model recapitulated an extreme scenario of the dimorphism in aortic aneurysm development between genders. In a comparative experiment, all Alk5iko males (n=42)

Lysine acetylation in sexual stage malaria parasites is a target for antimalarial small molecules.

Therapies to prevent transmission of malaria parasites to the mosquito vector are a vital part of the global malaria elimination agenda. Primaquine is currently the only drug with such activity; however, its use is limited by side effects. The development of transmission-blocking strategies requires an understanding of sexual stage malaria parasite (gametocyte) biology and the identification of new drug leads. Lysine acetylation is an important posttranslational modification involved in regulating eukaryotic gene expression and other essential processes. Interfering with this process with hist

Click-evoked otoacoustic emissions in children and adolescents with gender identity disorder.

Click-evoked otoacoustic emissions (CEOAEs) are echo-like sounds that are produced by the inner ear in response to click-stimuli. CEOAEs generally have a higher amplitude in women compared to men and neonates already show a similar sex difference in CEOAEs. Weaker responses in males are proposed to originate from elevated levels of testosterone during perinatal sexual differentiation. Therefore, CEOAEs may be used as a retrospective indicator of someone's perinatal androgen environment. Individuals diagnosed with Gender Identity Disorder (GID), according to DSM-IV-TR, are characterized by a st

Childhood maltreatment and aggressive behaviour in violent offenders with psychopathy.

OBJECTIVE: To document experiences of childhood maltreatment among violent offenders with antisocial personality disorder (ASPD) distinguishing between those with and without the syndrome of psychopathy (+P and -P), and to determine whether maltreatment is associated with proactive and reactive aggression. METHOD: The sample included 10 violent offenders with ASPD+P, 15 violent offenders with ASPD-P, and 15 non offenders. All participants completed interviews with the same forensic psychiatrist focusing on physical, sexual, and emotional abuse prior to age 18 using the Early Trauma Inventory.

Cancer survivors in the United States: a review of the literature and a call to action.

BACKGROUND: The number of cancer survivors in the U.S. has increased from 3 million in 1971, when the National Cancer Act was enacted, to over 12 million today. Over 70% of children affected by cancer survive more than 10 years, and most are cured. Most cancer survivors are adults, with two-thirds of them 65 years of age or older and two-thirds alive at five years. The most common cancer diagnoses among survivors include breast, prostate and colorectal cancers. This review was conducted to better appreciate the challenges associated with cancer survivors and the opportunities healthcare provid

Critical review of existing patient reported outcome measures after male anterior urethroplasty.

PURPOSE: Male urethral stricture disease can be recurrent and debilitating. The aim of any intervention is to allow men to return to a normal state of voiding while maintaining a strong quality of life. A systematic review of the literature was conducted to assess for the use of patient reported outcome instruments after male anterior urethroplasty. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A review of PubMed® was conducted to identify studies that used a patient reported outcome measure to assess patient outcome after open surgical correction of male strictures. Preference was given to studies that used an ins

Mild zinc deficiency in male and female rats: early postnatal alterations in renal nitric oxide system and morphology.

OBJECTIVE: Fetal and postnatal zinc deficiencies induce an increase in arterial blood pressure and impair renal function in male adult rats. We therefore hypothesized that these renal alterations are present in early stages of life and that there are sexual differences in the adaptations to this nutritional injury. The aim was to study the effects of moderate zinc deficiency during fetal life and lactation on renal morphology, oxidative stress, apoptosis, and the nitric oxide system in male and female rats at 21 d of life. METHODS: Female Wistar rats received low (8 ppm) or control (30 ppm) z

Core sexual/reproductive health care to deliver to male adolescents: perceptions of clinicians focused on male health.

PURPOSE: Male adolescents experience adverse sexual/reproductive health (SRH) outcomes, yet few providers deliver male SRH care. Given the lack of evidence base for male SRH care, the purpose of this study was to examine perceived importance in delivering SRH care to male adolescents among clinicians focused on male health. METHODS: Seventeen primary care clinicians focused on male health, representing pediatricians, family physicians, internists, and nurse practitioners, were individually queried about male adolescents' SRH needs and perceived importance to screen/assess for 13 male SRH serv

Pharmacokinetics of three doses of sublingual testosterone in healthy premenopausal women.

CONTEXT: Sublingual testosterone is a single-dose treatment often used in studies regarding social, cognitive and sexual behavior. It is hypothesized that an increase in the ratio of free to total testosterone (free fraction) is indirectly, via genomic effects, responsible for the behavioral effects after sublingual testosterone administration. OBJECTIVE: To characterize the pharmacokinetics of three doses sublingual testosterone in premenopausal women. Also, to investigate the SHBG saturation threshold influencing the free level and free fraction of testosterone. DESIGN: We conducted an inv

MAOA, abuse exposure and antisocial behaviour: 30-year longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have raised issues concerning the replicability of gene × environment (G × E) interactions involving the monoamine oxidase A (MAOA) gene in moderating the associations between abuse or maltreatment exposure and antisocial behaviour. This study attempted to replicate the findings in this area using a 30-year longitudinal study that has strong resemblance to the original research cohort. AIMS: To test the hypothesis that the presence of the low-activity MAOA genotype was associated with an increased response to abuse exposure. METHOD: Participants were 398 males from

Clinical and laboratoristic strategy in late onset hypogonadism.

Aging in men is associated with a gradual and progressive decline in serum total testosterone concentrations as a result of primary testicular and secondary hypothalamic-pituitary dysfunction. Androgen secretion does not cease, it gradually decreases but usually continues at some level. A diagnosis of hypogonadism should rely on both symptoms and laboratory tests. Declining testosterone levels with age are primarily due to changes in the testes, which show decreases in the number of Leydig cells, the activity of enzymes that contribute to testosterone production, and the ability to increase te

Epigenetic abnormality of SRY gene in the adult XY female with pericentric inversion of the Y chromosome.

In normal ontogenetic development, the expression of the sex-determining region of the Y chromosome (SRY) gene, involved in the first step of male sex differentiation, is spatiotemporally regulated in an elaborate fashion. SRY is expressed in germ cells and Sertoli cells in adult testes. However, only few reports have focused on the expressions of SRY and the other sex-determining genes in both the classical organ developing through these genes (gonad) and the peripheral tissue (skin) of adult XY females. In this study, we examined the gonadal tissue and fibroblasts of a 17-year-old woman susp

Tropism-independent protection of macaques against vaginal transmission of three SHIVs by the HIV-1 fusion inhibitor T-1249.

We have assessed the potential of the fusion inhibitory peptide T-1249 for development as a vaginal microbicide to prevent HIV-1 sexual transmission. When formulated as a simple gel, T-1249 provided dose-dependent protection to macaques against high-dose challenge with three different SHIVs that used either CCR5 or CXCR4 for infection (the R5 virus SHIV-162P3, the X4 virus SHIV-KU1 and the R5X4 virus SHIV-89.6P), and it also protected against SIVmac251 (R5). Protection of half of the test animals was estimated by interpolation to occur at T-1249 concentrations of approximately 40-130 muM, wher

Flow cytometric quantification of bacteria in vaginal swab samples self-collected by adolescents attending a gynecology clinic.

Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is an important risk factor in reproductive health outcomes, such as pre-term birth and sexually transmitted infections including HIV. However, its etiology, diagnosis and treatment remain poorly defined. We evaluated flow cytometry as a tool to quantify total bacterial cells in vaginal specimens self-collected longitudinally by adolescents. BV was diagnosed by Gram-stain (criteria of Hay and Ison). Average flow cytometric counts of bacterial cell-units (BCU) was log(10) 8.04 per gram sample and was found to correlate with sample weight (p<0.0001). BV was frequently ob
