The impact of social media addiction on college students' mental health through social support and resilience.

The problematic use of social media has emerged as a significant challenge confronting contemporary college student populations, raising concerns about its harm to psychological well-being. Although prior studies explored how social support and resilience can reduce addictive behaviors, few have examined how these two factors jointly link social media addiction and mental health issues, or how gender shapes these links. This study addresses these gaps by proposing a moderated chain mediation model based on stress-buffering and resilience theories. A total of 1,020 Chinese undergraduates took p

Dynamics between affect and social acceptance as a function of social anxiety: A person-specific network approach.

Social acceptance and rejection are salient experiences, especially during adolescence. Acceptance and rejection relate to changes in positive and negative affect, although directionality of the relation remains unclear. The ability to regulate affect following social experiences may be part of the etiology of social anxiety disorder. With the importance of social cues in adolescence, as well as adolescence as a key window for the onset of social anxiety, we used daily diary data collected in a sample ranging from 9 to 18 years to examine daily changes in acceptance, rejection, positive affect

MeCP2 Deficiency Alters the Response Selectivity of Prefrontal Cortical Neurons to Different Social Stimuli.

Rett syndrome (RTT), a severe neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutations in the MeCP2 gene, is characterized by cognitive and social deficits. Previous studies have noted hypoactivity in the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC) pyramidal neurons of MeCP2-deficient mice (RTT mice) in response to both social and nonsocial stimuli. To further understand the neural mechanisms behind the social deficits of RTT mice, we monitored excitatory pyramidal neurons in the prelimbic region of the mPFC during social interactions in mice. These neurons' activity was closely linked to social preference, especi

Social skills in children with RASopathies: a comparison of Noonan syndrome and neurofibromatosis type 1.

BACKGROUND: Gene mutations within the RAS-MAPK signaling cascade result in Noonan syndrome (NS), neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), and related disorders. Recent research has documented an increased risk for social difficulties and features of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) among children with these conditions. Despite this emerging evidence, the neuropsychological characteristics associated with social skills deficits are not well understood, particularly for children with NS. METHODS: Parents of children with NS (n = 39), NF1 (n = 39), and unaffected siblings (n = 32) between the ages of 8 and

Joubert syndrome gene fam149b1 homolog, xbx-4 , is required for multiple sensory behaviors.

Many cells require cilia to receive environmental signals. Mutations in the ciliary gene fam149b1 result in the ciliopathy Joubert syndrome. The C. elegans homolog of fam149b1 , xbx-4 , is required for normal cilium structure. We found that loss of XBX-4 hinders multiple cilium-mediated behaviors. xbx-4 mutants display mild defects in male mating and nose touch behaviors and dramatic changes in social feeding. Unexpectedly, xbx-4 mutants increased reversal behavior in response to ethanol, a control stimulus used in olfactory assays. Variation in the magnitude of phenotypes for different neuron

Psychosocial correlates of adolescent cannabis use: data from the Italian subsample of the second International Self-Reported Delinquency study.

To provide a comprehensive picture of the whole spectrum of psychosocial factors potentially associated with adolescent cannabis use, bivariate and multivariate analyses were used to assess a variety of social, demographic, psychological, and behavioral correlates of last-month cannabis use and age of first use among 6,838 students. Results showed that only family problems, alcohol and/or other drug use/misuse, deviant behavior, and victimization were independently associated with either recent cannabis use or early onset of cannabis use when multiple, interacting factors were considered. Risperidone in the treatment of behavioral disorders associated with autism in children and adolescents.

This is a review of the clinical trials investigating the efficacy and safety of risperidone in the treatment of children with autistic spectrum disorders (ASD). The main clinical characteristics are impairment in social skills, communication difficulties, repetitive movements and behaviors, including stereotypies. Pharmacotherapy is mainly directed at the so-called target symptoms, ie, behavioral disorders and the various kinds of repetitions associated with ASD. According to the available data, risperidone seems to be moderately efficacious and safe for treating behavioral disorders. 4 doubl

Distinct social dynamics of joint action represented by interpersonal neural coupling in congruent and incongruent joint musical performances.

Collective human behavior plays a crucial role in the development of culture. However, whether and how different forms of collective behavior contain different social dynamics remains a cross-disciplinary debate regarding the mentalization during joint action in psychology as well as the sociality of music in ethnomusicology. This study delves into the comparison between congruent and incongruent joint actions from an interpersonal neural standpoint within the context of a joint musical performance. Simultaneously recording the neural activities of fifty pairs of string players during performa

Global autism prevalence, and exploring Montessori as a practical educational solution: a systematic review.

INTRODUCTION: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that impairs social interaction, communication, and appropriate behavior. METHODS: Out of 1,740 articles initially identified through electronic databases using PRISMA guidelines and the PICOS framework, only 15 met the inclusion criteria for this review. RESULTS: Although the precise etiology of autism remains unclear in most cases, from cohort studies, the heritability as a potential cause is estimated to range between 50% and 80%, taking into account consistent environmental risk factors such as parental age, p

Neural correlates of the late positive potential in relation to non-suicidal self-injury in depressed youth.

BACKGROUND: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a high-risk behavior frequently observed in adolescents with depression, where emotional dysregulation plays a crucial role in its emergence. The Late Positive Potential (LPP), as an event-related potential component linked to emotional processing, holds potential in elucidating neurophysiological mechanisms; however, its specific significance remains unclear. This study aims to explore abnormal neural responses to emotional stimuli in adolescents with depression (with and without NSSI) through LPP analysis. METHODS: EEG signals were recorded fro

Examining changes in drinking motives and their influence on drinking behaviors among heavy drinkers during their first year of college.

Drinking motives are robustly related to alcohol use behavior from adolescence through young adulthood. Yet, examination of changes in motives during the first year of college, a transitional time associated with both onset of and increases in heavy drinking has been understudied. We examined (a) whether drinking motives change, (b) time-varying effects of motives on alcohol use and consequences, and (c) change in the strength of the association between motives and use and motives and consequences over the first year of college. A sample of 121 heavy drinking first-year students (50% female, 5

Modulation of KDM1A with vafidemstat rescues memory deficit and behavioral alterations.

Transcription disequilibria are characteristic of many neurodegenerative diseases. The activity-evoked transcription of immediate early genes (IEGs), important for neuronal plasticity, memory and behavior, is altered in CNS diseases and governed by epigenetic modulation. KDM1A, a histone 3 lysine 4 demethylase that forms part of transcription regulation complexes, has been implicated in the control of IEG transcription. Here we report the development of vafidemstat (ORY-2001), a brain penetrant inhibitor of KDM1A and MAOB. ORY-2001 efficiently inhibits brain KDM1A at doses suitable for long te

Molecular Plasticity in Animal Pigmentation: Emerging Processes Underlying Color Changes.

Animal coloration has been rigorously studied and has provided morphological implications for fitness with influences over social behavior, predator-prey interactions, and sexual selection. In vertebrates, its study has developed our understanding across diverse fields ranging from behavior to molecular biology. In the search for underlying molecular mechanisms, many have taken advantage of pedigree-based and genome-wide association screens to reveal the genetic architecture responsible for pattern variation that occurs in early development. However, genetic differences do not provide a full p

Linking parental incarceration and family dynamics associated with intergenerational transmission: A life-course perspective.

Children experiencing parental incarceration face numerous additional disadvantages, but researchers have often relied on these other co-occurring factors primarily as controls. In this article, we focus on the intimate links between crime and incarceration, as well as on the broader family context within which parental incarceration often unfolds. Thus, parents' drug use and criminal behavior that precedes and may follow incarceration periods may be ongoing stressors that directly affect child well-being. We also use our analyses to foreground mechanisms associated with social learning theori

Gender Differences in Socio-ecological Determinants of Alcohol Use Among Hispanic Adolescents.

BACKGROUND: Compared to other racial groups, Hispanic/Latino(a) adolescents experience higher rates of alcohol (ab)use and alcohol-related problems. Evidence suggests there are gender differences in alcohol use patterns indicating the likelihood of gender differences in how various determinants influence alcohol use among the genders. Assessing the mechanisms that contribute to Hispanic adolescents' alcohol use requires an understanding of the multidimensional social and environmental processes that operate together to impact their alcohol use. In this study, we examined socio-ecological deter

Functional neuroimaging of high-risk 6-month-old infants predicts a diagnosis of autism at 24 months of age.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by social deficits and repetitive behaviors that typically emerge by 24 months of age. To develop effective early interventions that can potentially ameliorate the defining deficits of ASD and improve long-term outcomes, early detection is essential. Using prospective neuroimaging of 59 6-month-old infants with a high familial risk for ASD, we show that functional connectivity magnetic resonance imaging correctly identified which individual children would receive a research clinical best-estimate diagnosis of ASD at

Accountability: a missing construct in models of adherence behavior and in clinical practice.

Piano lessons, weekly laboratory meetings, and visits to health care providers have in common an accountability that encourages people to follow a specified course of action. The accountability inherent in the social interaction between a patient and a health care provider affects patients' motivation to adhere to treatment. Nevertheless, accountability is a concept not found in adherence models, and is rarely employed in typical medical practice, where patients may be prescribed a treatment and not seen again until a return appointment 8-12 weeks later. The purpose of this paper is to describ

Perceived social norms, expectations, and attitudes toward corporal punishment among an urban community sample of parents.

Despite the fact that corporal punishment (CP) is a significant risk factor for increased aggression in children, child physical abuse victimization, and other poor outcomes, approval of CP remains high in the United States. Having a positive attitude toward CP use is a strong and malleable predictor of CP use and, therefore, is an important potential target for reducing use of CP. The Theory of Planned Behavior suggests that parents' perceived injunctive and descriptive social norms and expectations regarding CP use might be linked with CP attitudes and behavior.
