Developmental outcome of school-age children born to mothers with heroin dependency: importance of environmental factors.

Development of children aged 5 to 12 years born to mothers with heroin dependency raised at home or adopted was studied in comparison with: (1) children with environmental deprivation alone (i.e. low parental socioeconomic status [SES] and evidence of neglect), (2) children born to fathers with heroin dependency fathers, and (3) control individuals of average SES. One hundred and sixty children (84 males and 76 females; average age at examination 8 years) were evaluated between 1998 and 1999. All were attending mainstream schools. All participants were examined by a paediatrician and a psychol

Does experience predict knowledge and behavior with respect to cutaneous melanoma, moles, and sun exposure? Possible outcome measures.

A prospective survey of 3105 adults in 16 randomly selected group practices was conducted to test whether individuals with a personal experience, family history, or other contact with malignant melanoma display more knowledge and appropriate behavior with regard to melanomas and sun exposure than those with no such experience. Although patients with previous contact with the condition were more likely to check for moles, were more aware of the significance of changes in the shape of moles, and were more aware of the necessity for prompt treatment, they were not more knowledgeable about other i

Object-recognition and spatial learning and memory in rats prenatally exposed to ethanol.

Prenatal ethanol exposure can produce cognitive and behavioral impairments. In the present study, rats from prenatal ethanol (E), pair-fed (PF), and ad libitum-fed control (C) treatment conditions were tested on the object-recognition delayed-nonmatching-to-sample (DNMS) task with nonrecurring items and on the spatial-navigation Morris water maze task. In Experiment 1, there were no significant differences among groups in object-recognition learning and memory, distractibility, or response perseveration on the DNMS task. In Experiment 2, the same rats were tested in the water maze; E rats took

Effect on rat feeding behavior of two selective D2 dopamine agonists.

B-HT 958 and SND 919, two selective agonists at D2 dopamine receptors, were examined for their influence on the feeding behavior of fasted rats. When food intake was determined in the rat's individual home cage, it was found to be reduced by both drugs at low sedative doses during the first hour after treatment and by SND 919 at the highest dose (which also elicits stereotypy) only 24 h later. However, SND 919 and B-HT 958 had no significant effect on feeding evaluated according to the X-maze and tube feeding tests. Analysis of the results, seen in the context of other behavioral signs produce

A comparison of a specialist women's alcohol and other drug treatment service with two traditional mixed-sex services: client characteristics and treatment outcome.

Eighty subjects from a specialist women's service (SWS) and eighty subjects from two traditional mixed-sex treatment services (TMS) were recruited to a comparative, longitudinal study of changes in alcohol and other drug associated problems. Both the SWS and the TMS programs were principally based on the traditional disease model and the 12-step philosophy but the SWS employed only female staff and provided residential childcare. The SWS succeeded in attracting significantly more lesbian women, women with dependent children, women sexually abused in childhood and with a maternal history of sub

Use of the CES-D in an American Indian village.

In this paper, we examine the performance of a pencil-and-paper screening questionnaire on depressive symptoms (the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale, or CES-D) in a sample of 120 adult American Indians belonging to a single Northwest Coast tribe. Results of factor analyses suggest that somatic complaints and emotional distress are not well differentiated from each other in this population. CES-D scores (which have shown good sensitivity and specificity for depressive disorders in this sample) also show weak and apparently nonsignificant trends to be elevated in the presence of

Expressed emotion and schizophrenia in Italy. A study of an urban population.

Forty-two schizophrenic patients and their close relatives took part in an Italian replication study of expressed emotion (EE). The patients were selected from the psychiatric ward of a general hospital in Milan and were subsequently followed up for nine months. All patients attended a community service clinic as out-patients, and all but one were prescribed neuroleptics for the duration of the study. Relatives were assigned to the high-EE group if they scored 4 or 5 on the emotional overinvolvement (EOI) scale, or showed hostility, or made six or more critical comments. On this basis, 18 (42%

Caffeine effects on cardiovascular and neuroendocrine responses to acute psychosocial stress and their relationship to level of habitual caffeine consumption.

The effects of a moderate dose of caffeine on cardiovascular and neuroendocrine stress reactivity were examined in 25 healthy male subjects selected as habitual or light consumers of caffeine. Measurements were taken under resting conditions before and after administration of caffeine (3.5 mg/kg) or placebo, during a stressful laboratory task, and in a post-stress recovery period. Caffeine elevated blood pressure and plasma norepinephrine levels at rest, effects which added significantly to the effects of stress. Caffeine potentiated stress-related increases in plasma epinephrine and cortisol

[A 20-year follow-up study of a sample of 50 pairs of twins with neurotic-psychosomatic disorders].

As part of a research project, examination was made of a sample of 50 pairs of twins (21 pairs of identical twins, 16 pairs of non-identical twins of the same sex, and 13 pairs of male-female twins [n = 100 test persons]) between 1963 and 1969 and again recently after a period of 20 years. The index twins were drawn from among the patients who made use of the services of an out-patient psychotherapeutic clinic, and they were determined to be either psychoneurotic, character neurotic, or psychosomatically ill. The question examined was again one of nature vs. nurture. Identical twins showed a s

A comparison of borderline and schizophrenic patients for childhood life events and parent-child relationships.

Fifteen patients with DSM-III diagnoses of borderline personality disorder and 14 schizophrenics were administered two questionnaires by an interviewer blind to the diagnoses. The questionnaires were the Childhood Life Events and Family Characteristics Questionnaire and the Parental Bonding Instrument. A scale to monitor denial was also included. Borderlines, when compared with schizophrenics, reported having significantly more childhood sexual and physical abuse, more early separation from their mothers, more paternal criminality, and also more paternal overprotection and less maternal care.

Neonatal risk factors in preterm infants.

This paper highlights the research literature on neonatal risk factors and explores the paradox that these factors present. Clinical and retrospective studies indicate that children who have developmental problems have had birth complications. On the other hand, birth complications do not predict developmental problems. Data from a longitudinal study of preterm infants are presented. A group of 59 preterm infants from English Speaking homes was assessed repeatedly from birth to age 5. A significant percentage of the children performed within the normal range or above, at each assessment period

Growth profile of preschool children from an urban low socio-economic community in India.

A five years longitudinal study on the growth and development was carried out on 68 infants from a low-socio-economic urban community in India. Ninety four percent of them suffered from Protein Calorie Malnutrition of varying degree at some time or the other during their first six years and of them 30% suffered severe PCM. The effect on heights and head circumference followed the same pattern as body weight. Their developmental quotients correlated with the degree of PCM till age of four years. This observation brings into focus a growth profile of underprivileged toddlers which is far worse t

Alcohol subjective responses in heavy drinkers: Measuring acute effects in the natural environment versus the controlled laboratory setting.

BACKGROUND: For decades, laboratory alcohol challenges have been the "gold standard" for measuring individual differences in alcohol's subjective effects. However, these approaches are expensive and labor-intensive, making them impractical for large-scale use. This study examined the reliability and validity of a new high-resolution EMA (HR-EMA) ambulatory approach to assessing alcohol use and subjective responses in drinkers' natural environments. METHODS: Participants were 83 young adult heavy social drinkers (58% male; mean ± SD age = 25.4 ± 2.6 years) who completed up to two smartphone-ba

Determinants of healthy orthorexia and orthorexia nervosa: the roles of food security, dietary behaviors, and obesogenic environment.

Orthorexia has recently gained attention as a two-dimensional construct centered on a shared health orientation. Recent conceptual developments distinguish healthy orthorexia (HeOr), defined as a non-pathological interest in healthy eating, from orthorexia nervosa (OrNe), characterized by rigid and compulsive food control accompanied by psychological and social impairment. This cross-sectional study investigated the associations of HeOr and OrNe with sociodemographic variables, dietary behaviors, and obesogenic environmental factors, and aimed to identify shared and distinct determinants of th

Restoring well-being through nature: a mixed-methods study of co-designed therapeutic gardening among people experiencing homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Nature-based interventions are increasingly recognised for their potential to support psychological well-being and social inclusion among vulnerable populations. However, few studies have examined the short-term effects of therapeutic gardening among individuals experiencing homelessness, a group at high risk of poor mental and physical health. METHODS: This mixed-methods study evaluated a participatory gardening programme implemented at a homeless shelter in Córdoba, Spain. Participants play an important role in the co-creation and co-management of therapeutic green spaces through

"Walking around the golf course is the exercise you need": Exploring the acceptability of a golf on referral scheme amongst participants through post-programme focus groups.

BACKGROUND: Physical inactivity has significant adverse consequences for health and wellbeing, yet its ubiquity in higher income countries continues to be a major issue. Participation in sport is one possible solution to reducing inactivity, with evidence showing its ability to increase physical activity levels, improving physical and mental health, as well as social connections. Recent research has suggested that the benefits of sports, such as golf, could be achieved through social prescribing schemes, connecting inactive individuals to local activity opportunities. However, it is unclear ho

Patient preferences for medications to treat opioid use disorder in carceral settings: Implications for tailored implementation and service delivery.

BACKGROUND: A critical lack of knowledge exists about incarcerated individuals' preferences for the provision of medications to treat opioid use disorder (MOUD) in carceral settings (i.e., jail, prison) and of multilevel factors that influence preferences (e.g., health needs, institutional policies). This gap limits the ability to tailor MOUD programs effectively to patient needs and optimize outcomes within correctional systems. METHODS: In 2025, 28 adults receiving MOUD in the community in the Northeastern United States and who previously received MOUD while incarcerated completed an in-dep

Analysis of the current situation and influencing factors of internal perceptions in patients with chronic heart failure at the county level.

AIM: The objective of this study is to investigate interoceptive awareness-defined as the ability to perceive and interpret bodily signals-in individuals diagnosed with chronic heart failure, along with the factors that may influence this awareness. This research aims to establish a theoretical foundation for the development of psychoeducational programs focused on interoception, such as mindfulness-based symptom awareness training, and digital health interventions specifically designed for patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). METHODS: A total of 406 patients diagnosed with congestive h

Development and Validation of the Questionnaire of Factors Related to the Adaptability to Return to Work Among Cancer Patients.

AIM: Enhancing the adaptability to return to work among cancer patients can help them fully mobilize coping resources and adapt to the environment during the reintegration process. However, influenced by multiple factors, the adaptability to return to work among cancer patients in China remains inadequate and requires improvement. To address this, we aim to develop and validate the Questionnaire of Factors related to the Adaptability to Return to Work Among Cancer Patients (abbreviated as QF-ARTWCP).
