Chronic psychosocial stress triggers cognitive impairment in a novel at-risk model of Alzheimer's disease.

Although it is generally accepted that Abeta contributes to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD), other factors that impact the severity and time of onset of the disease are not well known. Aside from genetic factors, environmental factors such as stress may also play a critical role in the manifestation of AD. The present study examined the effect of chronic psychosocial stress in an at-risk, subthreshold Abeta (subAbeta) rat model of AD by three approaches: learning and memory tests in the radial arm water maze, electrophysiological recordings of long-term potentiation (LTP) in anest

Eye gaze during face processing in children and adolescents with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) is a neurogenetic syndrome with high risk for the development of psychiatric disorder. There is interest in identifying reliable markers for measuring and monitoring socio-emotional impairments in 22q11DS during development. The current study investigated eye gaze as a potential marker during a face-processing task in children and young adolescents with 22q11DS. METHOD: Eye gaze and behavioral correlates were investigated in 26 subjects (aged 8 to 15 years) with 22q11DS during the Jane Task, which targets featural and configural face processi

Ampullosporin A, a peptaibol from Sepedonium ampullosporum HKI-0053 with neuroleptic-like activity.

The potential neuroleptic-like effect of ampullosporin A, a new peptaibol, isolated from the fungus Sepedonium ampullosporum HKI-0053, was characterized using specific behavioural models and methods. Ampullosporin A (amp) disrupted the retrieval of a well-trained conditioned reaction and normalized the behavioural effects of subchronic ketamine treatment in the social interaction test in a dose which showed only inconsiderable side effects. The experiments demonstrated that the substance did not antagonize the apomorphine (apo) induced hyperactivity. On the other hand, the locomotor stimulatio

Autoantibodies against opioid or glutamate receptors are associated with changes in morphine reward and physical dependence in mice.

BACKGROUND: Possible interactions between nervous and immune systems during opioid addiction remain elusive. Recombinant mu-delta opioid receptors (MDOR) and the glutamate receptor 1 (GluR1) subunit of amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazole propionic acid glutamate receptors are involved in acute and chronic effects of morphine. Elevated levels of autoantibodies (aAbs) to these receptors were demonstrated in heroin human addicts and in animal models. This study characterized the role of aAbs to these receptors in behavioral modulations recruited during opioid tolerance and sensitization. METHOD

Broader autism phenotype in parents of autistic children: reality or myth?

The finding that relatives of individuals with autism show mild autistic traits is referred to as the broader autism phenotype (BAP). In the current study, 25 parents with a child with high-functioning autism and 25 parents with typically developed children were compared on: (1) the Block Design Test, (2) the Autism-Spectrum Quotient (AQ), and (3) a reaction time task to examine reflexive covert visual orienting to social (eyes) and non-social (arrows) cues. The parent groups were scored similar on the Block Design Test and the AQ. However, fathers with an autistic child demonstrated a differe

Factors Influencing Motivation and Engagement in Mobile Health Among Patients With Sickle Cell Disease in Low-Prevalence, High-Income Countries: Qualitative Exploration of Patient Requirements.

BACKGROUND: Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a hematological genetic disease affecting over 25 million people worldwide. The main clinical manifestations of SCD, hemolytic anemia and vaso-occlusion, lead to chronic pain and organ damages. With recent advances in childhood care, high-income countries have seen SCD drift from a disease of early childhood mortality to a neglected chronic disease of adulthood. In particular, coordinated, preventive, and comprehensive care for adults with SCD is largely underresourced. Consequently, patients are left to self-manage. Mobile health (mHealth) apps for chr

OBJECTIVES: When the Japanese Organ Transplantation Act was issued, the Japanese Organ Transplantation Network (JOT) was established in 1997. JOT lists recipients, assesses and manages organ donors, and educates publics and headquarters for organ donations. JOT procurement transplant coordinators (PTC) play roles in obtaining consent from relatives for organ donation, donor evaluation and management, organ recovery management, organ transport, and care of donor families during and after donation. Every prefecture has at least one PTC who is mainly working in public education and hospital devel

Infantile autism: a chronic psychosis since infancy due to synaptic pruning of the supplementary motor area.

The rise in infantile autism, learning problems, cognitive decline with age, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's diseases and the SIDS epidemic, has a common cause in the rising dietary deficit in Omega-3 brain-food. This paper suggests that aside from the wider concept of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and pervasive developmental disorders (PDD), the rise in infantile autism (IA) in the last decade is the effect of deficient brain-food (Omega-3). The consequent delay of development, prolongs the 2nd regressive event in infancy to pruning of the centre in the Medial Frontal Lobe System that connects hip

[The information of the schizophrenic patient: actuality].

Social isolation has got to be one of the greatest losses in schizophrenia. For many authors, people with schizophrenia can have no friends, no spouse, and sometimes no family. Two thirds of patients with schizophrenia return to their parents' house after discharge from a hospital for the first psychosi episode. Family members generally receive very little education as to what they can expect. They may not know the importance of medication compliance. Family members are the primary victims of violence from psychotic individuals, usually their own son or daughter, and most families cannot belie

Families and Schools Together (FAST) for improving outcomes for children and their families.

BACKGROUND: Parents and carers have a major influence on children's learning and development from birth, through the school years, and into adulthood. Parental contributions to education include providing a secure environment in which to learn, providing intellectual stimulation, transmitting social norms and values, shaping the child's resilience through fostering literacy and problem-solving, and encouraging personal and social aspiration. Increasingly, providers of formalised education are recognising the primary role of parents, carers, and the wider family, as well as peers and the enviro

Immersive Virtual Reality-Supported Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy for Patients With Mild to Borderline Intellectual Disabilities and Substance Use Disorders: Two Exploratory Studies.

BACKGROUND: Substance use disorders (SUDs) are prevalent and characterized by high relapse rates. Individuals with mild to borderline intellectual disability (MBID) are more likely to develop SUDs and face barriers within treatment related to difficulties they experience with abstract thinking, verbal skills, and generalizing learned strategies to real-world contexts. Therefore, experiential, context-rich approaches are needed that reduce reliance on retrospective verbal reflection, support in-context identification of triggers, and allow the rehearsal of coping responses. Immersive virtual re

Digital Markers for Passive Remote Monitoring of Bipolar Disorder: Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: Bipolar disorder (BD) features episodic shifts among mania, hypomania, depression, mixed states, and euthymia. Timely detection of mood transitions is difficult due to infrequent clinical touchpoints. Digital health technologies, including wearables and smartphones, offer a unique opportunity to passively and continuously monitor behavior and physiology that could reflect underlying mood dynamics in real-world settings. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to systematically review passively collected digital markers for BD mood states, characterize devices/modalities and analytic approache
