Modification of radiation-induced oral mucositis (mouse) by adult stem cell therapy: single-dose irradiation.

Early oral mucositis occurs in response to accidental upper partial body exposure as well as to radiotherapy in the head-and-neck region. This study was initiated to define the potential of mobilization of endogenous bone marrow (BM) stem cells by rHuG-CSF or of bone marrow transplantation (BMT) to reduce the effect of single-dose irradiation on mouse oral epithelium. A 3 × 3 mm(2) area of the lower tongue surface of mice was irradiated with graded single doses (day 0). Mucosal ulceration was used as the endpoint for dose-response analyses. Stem cells were mobilized by rHuG-CSF (8 times/4 days

Dental management of the elderly patient.

UNLABELLED: The dental management of the elderly individual is becoming more of an issue in both general dental practice and specialist prosthodontic practice. This is because, in general, the population is living longer and often elderly patients are retaining their natural teeth into their old age. In addition, there are often related significant medical, social and oro-dental issues that require consideration. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: The dental management of the elderly patient is an increasing problem. This paper seeks to consider the main relevant issues pertaining to this important subject

Psychological profiles in patients with recurrent aphthous ulcers.

The aim of this study was to investigate the psychological profiles of patients with recurrent aphthous ulcers (RAUs). 50 patients (27 men and 23 women, mean age 31.44±9.95 years) with diagnosed RAUs participated in this study. 50 controls who matched the patients in age and gender were also recruited. The participants' personality and psychological profiles were assessed using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HAD) and the Neuroticism-Extraversion-Openness Five Factor Inventory (NEO-FFI). Data analysis showed that females had higher HAD anxiety scores than males in both patients and

[Radio-induced oral and pharyngeal mucositis: management updates].

Mucositis is a major side effect induced by radiotherapy and/or chemotherapy of head and neck cancer. This toxicity impacts patient's quality of life and may compromise optimal treatments. Pathophysiology, risk factors, incidence and consequences of mucositis will be discussed in this review. Its management remains principally supportive (pain medication and nutritional support); however, in recent years several studies have revealed that the use of low level energy laser is particularly useful in the prevention and treatment of chemo- and radio-induced mucositis.

Role of antioxidants in buccal mucosa cells and plasma on the incidence and severity of oral mucositis after allogeneic haematopoietic cell transplantation.

PURPOSE: Oral mucositis (OM) is known to be a significant complication of chemotherapy preceding haematopoietic cell transplantation (HCT). Antioxidants (AOX) scavenge free radicals, which play a major role in the initiation of OM and may reduce the OM risk. STUDY DESIGN: The primary objective of this prospective study was to investigate the association between the incidence and severity of OM (WHO oral toxicity scale) and the AOX status in buccal mucosa cells (BMC) and plasma. The α-tocopherol, ascorbic acid and ß-carotene concentrations in BMC and plasma were assessed at admission in 70 pat

[Massive alveolar hemorrhage due to cytomegalovirus (CMV) and HIV infection].

Alveolar hemorrhage may be a complication of diseases with local and systemic manifestations. Both share the same pathophysiological concept: damage to the alveolar microcirculation. It is a clinical entity that generates a diagnostic challenge for the physician. Early recognition favors aggressive treatment, which can improve the outcome. Despite the technological advances in its diagnosis and treatment, it is still a condition having high morbidity and mortality. We present the case of a 42-year old woman diagnosed of massive alveolar hemorrhage induced by cytomegalovirus (CMV) and HIV infec

Use of low dose tacrolimus, mycophenolate mofetil and maintenance IL-2 receptor blockade in an islet transplant recipient.

The utilization of dual maintenance therapy with tacrolimus and sirolimus (the Edmonton protocol) has been widely adopted as standard immunosuppression for islet cell transplantation. This immunosuppression regimen has numerous toxicities including renal dysfunction, anemia, and recurrent aphthous ulcers. We present a case of a 63-yr-old Caucasian female who received an isolated islet transplant. Over the first six months post-transplant, the patient developed severe anemia, intractable aphthous ulcers, and renal dysfunction. Islet transplant function was excellent and the patient is insulin-i

A role for IRF3-dependent RXRalpha repression in hepatotoxicity associated with viral infections.

Viral infections and antiviral responses have been linked to several metabolic diseases, including Reye's syndrome, which is aspirin-induced hepatotoxicity in the context of a viral infection. We identify an interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3)-dependent but type I interferon-independent pathway that strongly inhibits the expression of retinoid X receptor alpha (RXRalpha) and suppresses the induction of its downstream target genes, including those involved in hepatic detoxification. Activation of IRF3 by viral infection in vivo greatly enhances bile acid- and aspirin-induced hepatotoxicity. O

[A glance into the mouth--dental aspects for physicians].

A glance into the mouth at the surgery occasionally confronts the general practitioner or specialist with dental aspects or issues. The nursing-bottle syndrome and injuries from accidents are frequently observed in children. In older patients, mucosal change is not a rare occurrence. A comparatively new field is halitosis and its effective and cause-related treatment.
