BACKGROUND: Streptococcus suis (S. suis) is an anthropozoonotic pathogen that shows clinical manifestations of meningitis, septicemia, and arthritis in infected humans. Nocardia is another type of anthropozoonotic bacteria, with clinical manifestations of skin, lung, and brain abscesses in infected humans. Few intracranial infections caused by S. suis or Nocardia have been reported. To the best of our knowledge, no study has reported a patient with simultaneous intracranial infection by S. suis and Nocardia.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the usefulness and performance of a two-stage attention-aware convolutional neural network (CNN) for the automated diagnosis of otitis media from tympanic membrane (TM) images.
DESIGN: A classification model development and validation study in ears with otitis media based on otoscopic TM images. Two commonly used CNNs were trained and evaluated on the dataset. On the basis of a Class Activation Map (CAM), a two-stage classification pipeline was developed to improve accuracy and reliability, and simulate an expert reading the TM images.

Trypanosoma cruzi is the etiologic agent of American trypanosomiasis and can infect humans and different species of domestic and wild animals. The marsupials are important wild reservoirs of T. cruzi, aiding in the maintenance of this agent in sylvatic and peri-domestic environments. The objective of this study was to report the parasitological and clinicopathological findings of a natural infection by T. cruzi in one specimen of Philander opossum that originated from the Brazilian Amazon. The animal was captured in a forest fragment near a rural community with reports of human Chagas disease.

Nocardia infection after RT is uncommon. The most common modes of exposure are inhalation of dust containing nocardia or contaminated soil/water and surgical instruments.
