Entopeduncular nucleus endocannabinoid system modulates sleep-waking cycle and mood in rats.

Since the pioneering work of Gadea-Ciria (Gadea-Ciria M, Stadler H, Lloyd KG, Bartholini G. Acetylcholine release within the cat striatum during the sleep-wakefulness cycle. Nature 1973; 243:518-519) indicating pointing to the involvement of acetylcholine and basal ganglia in sleep regulation; extensive literature has suggested that this brain complex participates in the control of the sleep-waking cycle (SWC). On the other hand, it has been demonstrated that the endocannabinoid system (eCBS) is prominently involved in the regulation of the SWC, mood and its related disorders. Since cannabinoi

Perceived Social Support Mediating Caregiver Burden and Mental Health in Schizophrenia Caregivers.

Schizophrenia is a severe, chronic mental disorder that imposes a substantial burden on family members, and this burden is strongly correlated with caregivers' increased levels of anxiety and depression. Conversely, perceived social support functions as a critical coping resource, thereby effectively moderating stress and facilitating better psychological adjustment. This quantitative study tested the mediating hypothesis that perceived social support accounts for the relationship between caregiver burden and these negative psychological outcomes. This study adopted a cross-sectional design an

Divergent trajectories of psychological distress during the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic in Japan.

Psychological responses to the COVID-19 pandemic showed heterogeneous trajectories rather than uniform recovery. We analyzed seven waves of nationwide web-based surveys conducted in Japan between June 2020 and December 2022 (approximately 1,000 participants per wave) to examine long-term trends in depression, anxiety, and stress and their associations with self-evaluative traits. DASS-21 scores were significantly elevated during the initial emergency phase (June 2020) and declined substantially thereafter (Kruskal-Wallis tests, all p < .001). However, distributional analyses indicated that a s

Changes in citizens' anxiety, depression, and PTSD after the Seoul Halloween crowd crush in 2022.

This study aims to understand the mental health of South Koreans one year after the Seoul Halloween crowd disaster(hereafter referred to as the Seoul Halloween disaster), an anthropogenic disaster that occurred in 2022. In total, 651 participants completed three online surveys to measure anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) over a year after the disaster. The collected data were then analyzed with descriptive statistics, repeated-measures analysis of variance (ANOVA), and independent samples t-tests using the SPSS 28 program. Six months after the Seoul Halloween disas

Anxiety in aquatics: Leveraging machine learning models to predict adult zebrafish behavior.

Accurate analysis of anxiety behaviors in animal models is pivotal for advancing neuroscience research and drug discovery. This study compares the potential of DeepLabCut, ZebraLab, and machine learning models to analyze anxiety-related behaviors in adult zebrafish. Using a dataset comprising video recordings of unstressed and pre-stressed zebrafish, we extracted features such as total inactivity duration/immobility, time spent at the bottom, time spent at the top and turn angles (large and small). We observed that the data obtained using DeepLabCut and ZebraLab were highly correlated. Using t

Attachment anxiety, reflective functioning and well-being as predictors of burn-out and psychological distress among psychotherapists: A longitudinal study.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to longitudinally investigate the effects of individual's factors on subsequent burn-out/psychological distress in a sample of mental health practitioners, testing if higher attachment anxiety and avoidance and lower reflective functioning (i.e., certainty and uncertainty of mental states) and well-being at baseline may lead to a greater psychological distress and burn-out 1 year later. METHODS: The sample consisted of 40 experienced psychotherapists (females: 72.5%; mean age: 47.40 ± 9.48 years) who completed a battery of questionnaires at baseline and 1 year later

Heightened generalized conditioned fear and avoidance in women and underlying psychological processes.

Heightened generalization of conditioned fear and avoidance to safe stimuli resembling threat is a key feature of pathological anxiety and might contribute to the increased prevalence of anxiety-related disorders among women. Though animal studies have documented over-generalized fear in female versus male rodents, analogous work in humans is sparse, and no studies to date have examined gender differences in generalized avoidance. We addressed this gap by testing 170 self-identified women (n = 85) and men (n = 85) using a video game-based task assessing generalized Pavlovian fear (perceived th

Accounting for the associations between child maltreatment and internalizing problems: The role of alexithymia.

Internalizing difficulties are one of the most widely documented consequences of child maltreatment. However, there is a need for studies delineating the factors that account for this association. Despite research showing that alexithymia is associated with both child maltreatment and internalizing problems, the role of alexithymia in the link between child maltreatment and internalizing problems has not received much attention in the literature. The current study evaluated whether a history of child maltreatment was associated with symptoms of depression, anxiety, and loneliness in emerging a

Social anxiety and cognitive expectancy of aversive outcome in avoidance conditioning.

Fear conditioning studies have shown that social anxiety is associated with enhanced expectancy of aversive outcome. However, the relation between cognitive expectancy and social anxiety has never been tested in avoidance conditioning paradigms. We compared 48 low (LSA) and high socially anxious individuals (HSA) on subjective expectancy of aversive outcome during an avoidance conditioning task. Displays of neutral faces were coupled with an aversive outcome (US): a shout and a shock. Participants could avoid the US by pressing a correct button from a button box. First, HSA showed higher US ex

Chronic subjective dizziness.

CONCLUSION: Chronic subjective dizziness (CSD) is frequent and affects twice as many women as men. Anxiety is a strong predisposing factor. The pathophysiologic concept of this disorder assumes that balance function and emotion share common neurologic pathways, which might explain that the balance disorder can provoke fear and vice versa, giving rise to a problem in perception of space and motion. In anxious patients this can turn into a space and motion phobia, with avoidance behaviour. OBJECTIVE: CSD is a diagnosis based on the hypothesis of an interaction between the vestibular system and

Cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript peptide produces anxiety-like behavior in rodents.

Cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript (CART) peptide (CART-(55-102)) is involved in the suppression of food intake. We now report that CART-(55-102) is involved in anxiety in rodents. Intracerebroventricularly administered CART-(55-102) as well as intraperitoneal administration of N-methyl-beta-carboline-3-carboxamide (FG-7142), a selective GABA(A)/benzodiazepine receptor inverse agonist, reduced time spent in the open arms in the elevated plus-maze task in mice. CART-(55-102)-induced anxiogenic-like behavior in this task was attenuated by widely prescribed anxiolytics such as diazepam

Emotion Regulation Processes Related to Emotional Symptoms and Their Severity in a Clinical Primary Care Sample.

Emotion regulation (ER) processes have been studied as factors for the development and treatment of emotional disorders (EDs). The aim of this descriptive study was to determine how worry, rumination, negative metacognition, cognitive biases, and adaptive ER strategies contribute to the change in specific ED symptoms and their severity in a sample of adult primary care patients (N = 139). Different self-reported instruments were applied to assess symptoms and the use of the aforementioned ER processes. To analyse the data, Spearman correlations and Kruskal-Wallis tests were used to examine rel

Screening for anxiety and depression: validation of the Patient Health Questionnaire for Depression and Anxiety (PHQ-4) in a large sample of rehabilitation patients.

PURPOSE: Anxiety and depression are the most prevalent mental disorders in rehabilitation populations and negatively impact rehabilitation outcomes. The Patient Health Questionnaire for Depression and Anxiety (PHQ-4) is an ultra-brief screening instrument validated for general and primary care populations. We validated the PHQ-4 for the first time for the rehabilitation setting. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study sample consisted of 66,412 patients attending multimodal inpatient rehabilitation, covering various medical indications. To validate the PHQ-4's factorial validity, we conducted confir

Juvenile influenza can impair myelin development and adult behavior through chemokine signaling in mice.

Brain development, especially developmental myelination, continues through young adulthood. Concordantly, children may be particularly vulnerable to neural-immune challenges. To investigate the consequences of major childhood immune challenges, juvenile mice were exposed to respiratory influenza (H1N1) infection. White matter-specific microglial reactivity accompanied by oligodendrocyte loss was evident until two months following infection. Mice exhibited hyperlocomotion and impaired attention, but not anxiety-like behavior, at one month following infection. Linking the oligodendroglial and be

Peer victimization and adjustment: Moderation by perceptions of same-race and other-race classmates' behavior.

Drawing on the "social misfit" hypothesis, this study tested whether peer victimization is more predictive of maladjustment when children have many same-race classmates who they view as low in aggression. Also accounted for were children's race, the racial composition of the classroom, and children's perceptions of other-race peers. Data were collected in the fall, winter, and spring of a school year from 1,424 4th and 5th grade children (Mage = 10.06; SDage = 0.67; Rangeage = 8.43-13.03; 683 girls; 741 boys; 39.61% Black; 60.39% White) in the Southeastern United States. Emotional and Cognitive Effects of Simulated Temporary Hearing Deficit with Healthy Adults.

Background/Objectives: Accumulation of cerumen (earwax) in the auditory canal is a common condition, particularly in children and older adults, and often causes temporary hearing loss. While chronic hearing loss is known to affect mood and cognition, little is known about the psychological impact of short-term auditory deprivation. This pilot study aimed to examine the emotional and cognitive effects of simulated temporary hearing loss. Methods: Thirty healthy adults (16 females, aged 18-60) participated. Temporary hearing loss was simulated by placing earplugs in both ears for two hours. Part

Pragmatic measurement of mechanisms: Does use of coping strategies mediate the effects of a teacher stress intervention?

Supporting teachers to cope with occupational stress is an important area of research. Many studies have examined the initial efficacy of teacher stress interventions; however, none have tested potential causal mechanisms. A previous study of a bibliotherapy teacher stress intervention based in cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) revealed positive effects on stress, coping, depression, and anxiety (n = 52, Eddy et al., 2022). The purpose of the present study was to examine the use of coping strategies as a mediator of treatment effects in the previously reported randomized control trial study.
