OBJECTIVE: Surgical site infection is a major cause of mortality and morbidity. We have explored the use of a microbial sealant applied before the surgical incision to reduce surgical site infection.

HYPOTHESIS: Because of better survival following pancreaticoduodenectomy (PD), patients may develop complications due to PD and not due to malignancy per se. Exocrine insufficiency may be related to pancreatic duct obstruction or strictures attributable to duct-to-mucosa anastomosis, as in pancreaticojejunostomy. We propose a technique of managing a post-PD duct obstruction.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of closure or non-closure of the visceral peritoneum at cesarean delivery on uterine scar formation assessed at repeat cesarean delivery.
METHODS: Women undergoing initial cesarean delivery were allocated into 2 groups: group 1 underwent visceral peritoneal closure, while in group 2 the visceral peritoneum was not closed. At repeat cesarean delivery 4 specimens from the initial uterine scar were collected and assessed by light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy.

OBJECTIVE: The vein of Galen aneurysmal malformation (VGAM) is a choroidal type of arteriovenous malformation involving the vein of Galen forerunner. This is distinct from an arteriovenous malformation with venous drainage into a dilated, but already formed, vein of Galen. Reports of endovascular treatment of VGAM in the literature approach the disease from a purely technical viewpoint and often fail to provide satisfactory midterm results. To focus the therapeutic challenge to a strictly morphological goal overlooks the fundamental aspects of neonatal and infant anatomy and fluid physiology.

We present the case of a 60-year-old man with persistent epistaxis for 20 days that had started 2 weeks after removal of a nasogastric tube placed for an abdominal operation. There was no pathologic finding at selective facial and internal maxillary artery injections. An injury to the ethmoidal branches of the ophthalmic arteries or other arterial origins of bleeding was suspected. The internal carotid artery angiography revealed a pseudoaneurysm of an anterior ethmoidal branch of the left ophthalmic artery. The pseudoaneurysm was occluded with NBCA-histoacryl (25%) injection.
