Suppression of centrineurogenic shock lung by Dilantin (DPH) administered early in established hemorrhagic shock.

Centrineurogenic shock lung following acute hemorrhage was prevented by Dilantin (DPH) given preshock. Nineteen anemia (Hct = 30 +/- 5%) dogs were divided into five groups: one control (no anesthesia, no shock); one of three with 4 hours of anesthesia alone; and of 15 dogs with hemorrhagic shock, eight were without DPH, two with preshock DPH, and five received DPH 15 min after shock was established. Shock animals were rapidly bled to 40 mm Hg which was maintained for 2 hours, and all shed blood was reinfused. One hour later, all animals were sacrificed, the lungs fixed with formalin instilled

Experimental Reptarenavirus Infection of Boa constrictor and Python regius.

Boid inclusion body disease (BIBD) causes losses in captive snake populations globally. BIBD is associated with the formation of cytoplasmic inclusion bodies (IBs), which mainly comprise reptarenavirus nucleoprotein (NP). In 2017, BIBD was reproduced by cardiac injection of boas and pythons with reptarenaviruses, thus demonstrating a causative link between reptarenavirus infection and the disease. Here, we report experimental infections of Python regius (n = 16) and Boa constrictor (n = 16) with three reptarenavirus isolates. First, we used pythons (n = 8) to test two virus delivery routes: in

The role of TRPA1 and TRPV4 channels in bronchoconstriction and plasma extravasation in airways of rats treated with captopril.

Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEis) may cause adverse airway events, such as cough and angioedema, due to a reduction in bradykinin breakdown and consequent activation of bradykinin type 2 receptor (B2 receptor). Recent studies have shown that bradykinin can also sensitize pro-inflammatory receptors such as the transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1) and vanilloid 4 (TRPV4), which are implicated in several inflammatory airway diseases. Based on these considerations, the aim of this study was to understand the role of TRPA1 and TRPV4 channels in the bronchoconstrictive respo

Aerosol Transmission of Gull-Origin Iceland Subtype H10N7 Influenza A Virus in Ferrets.

Subtype H10 influenza A viruses (IAVs) have been recovered from domestic poultry and various aquatic bird species, and sporadic transmission of these IAVs from avian species to mammals (i.e., human, seal, and mink) are well documented. In 2015, we isolated four H10N7 viruses from gulls in Iceland. Genomic analyses showed four gene segments in the viruses were genetically associated with H10 IAVs that caused influenza outbreaks and deaths among European seals in 2014. Antigenic characterization suggested minimal antigenic variation among these H10N7 isolates and other archived H10 viruses recov

Tracheal resection and mediastinal tracheostomy for cervical parastomal recurrence after laryngectomy and radiochemotherapy followed by several complications: a rare case report.

BACKGROUND: Patients with parastomal recurrence have poor prognosis and pose a great challenge to the surgeons. Surgical resection is the only curable choice. Treating this patient group with a patent tracheostoma and a stable airway is the main objective.  CASE PRESENTATION: We present an extremely rare case of a parastomal relapse after laryngectomy and radiochemotherapy for laryngeal carcinoma. Partial resection of the manubrium, medial part of the right clavicle, medial parts of the 1st and 2nd ribs, proximal part of the trachea below the cervical tracheostomy and subtotal thyroidectomy we

A complete 3D-printed multiscale tracheobronchial tree for aerosol deposition assessment.

The complex and multiscale structure of the lung's airways is extremely difficult to mimic experimentally using in vitro models. Here, we 3D-printed using additive manufacturing a model at human scale of the complete tracheobronchial airways from mouth down to the 14th airway generation. By adding a "bending" angle between parent airways and the plane of the daughter airways we successfully created 16 tightly packed airway clusters each spanning generations 4 to 14. This strategy eliminated the need for using support material within the airways, greatly simplifying the printing process. In a p

Non-invasive removal of the Smart tracheal occlusion device for fetal congenital diaphragmatic hernia: a single-arm, open-label, phase 1 study.

BACKGROUND: One of the drawbacks of fetoscopic endoluminal tracheal occlusion (FETO) for congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) is the need for a second intervention to establish airway patency. In this first-in-human study, we aimed to evaluate a novel tracheal occlusion device (Smart-TO) that spontaneously deflates when in close proximity to a strong magnetic field. METHODS: We conducted two parallel single-centre, single-arm, open-label trials in Paris, France, and Leuven, Belgium. Eligibility criteria included patient age 18 years or more, singleton pregnancy with CDH, and severe or modera

Optimization of Tracheal Intubation and Ventilatory Management in a Rat Thoracotomy Model.

OBJECTIVE: To establish a practical and reproducible method for procedural standardization during tracheal intubation and ventilatory management during thoracotomy in rats, and evaluate the invasiveness of thoracotomy as a control condition. METHODS: Tracheal length and diameter were measured in adult female Wistar rats to determine appropriate intubation devices. Positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) was titrated (0-5 cm H2O) under open chest conditions using a macroscopic lung expansion score. In a separate experiment, the rats underwent left thoracotomy with incision lengths of 1, 2, or

Balloon dilation therapy for severe postoperative dysphagia after tracheal resection.

Severe dysphagia after tracheal resection may result from reduced hyolaryngeal traction and restricted upper oesophageal sphincter (UES) opening. We report a man in his late 50s who remained dependent on tube-feeding after circumferential tracheal resection with partial resection of the suprahyoid muscle and hyoid bone. Compensatory strategies provided limited benefit. UES-directed balloon dilation, guided and monitored by serial video-fluoroscopic swallowing study and fibreoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing, was associated with an immediate increase in UES opening from approximately 3

Robotic tracheal resection/reconstruction under extracorporeal membrane oxygenation after rigid bronchoscopy.

Tracheal resection/reconstruction is among the most technically demanding procedures in thoracic surgery, traditionally requiring open approaches with complex airway management. The emergence of robotic-assisted surgery combined with venovenous extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (VV-ECMO) offers a minimally invasive alternative providing enhanced surgical precision, reduced postoperative morbidity and optimal apnoeic operative conditions. We report a robotic tracheal resection/reconstruction under VV-ECMO in a 65-year-old patient with a tracheal mucoepidermoid carcinoma following endoscopic d

Orchestrated response from heterogenous fibroblast subsets contributes to repair from surgery-induced stress after airway reconstruction.

Surgery of the tracheobronchial tree carries high morbidity, with over half of the complications occurring at the anastomosis. Although fibroblasts are crucial in airway wound healing, the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms in airway reconstruction remain unknown. We hypothesized that airway reconstruction initiates a surgery-induced stress (SIS) response, altering fibroblast communication within airway tissues. Using single-cell RNA-Seq, we analyzed native and reconstructed airways and identified 5 fibroblast subpopulations, each with distinct spatial distributions across anastomoti

Tracheal resection and reconstruction under non-intubated anesthesia for nuclear protein in testis carcinoma: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Nuclear protein in testis (NUT) carcinoma is a rare and highly aggressive solid tumor with a poor overall survival outcome. There's no recognized treatment or consensus on the management for NUT carcinoma. To date, few cases of tracheal NUT carcinomas have been reported, and the prognosis of these cases was dismal. We report a rare case of tracheal resection and reconstruction performed under non-intubated anesthesia for tracheal NUT carcinoma with good outcomes, aiming to contribute our experience in the surgical treatment of tracheal NUT carcinoma. Multi-objective optimization of tracheal stent with J-shaped load-deformation behavior.

The tracheal stent is one of the treatment modalities for tracheal stenosis. However, the mismatch of mechanical properties between the tracheal stent and the trachea may lead to stent migration. The aim of this study is to design a tracheal stent with J-shaped load-deformation behavior based on a multi-objective optimization method. Four design parameters were selected as optimization variables. The optimization objectives were the loads at 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% deformation during uniaxial tensile test. The optimal Latin hypercube sampling was used to generate training samples, and Kriging su
