Prediction of eye, hair and skin colour in Latin Americans.

Here we evaluate the accuracy of prediction for eye, hair and skin pigmentation in a dataset of > 6500 individuals from Mexico, Colombia, Peru, Chile and Brazil (including genome-wide SNP data and quantitative/categorical pigmentation phenotypes - the CANDELA dataset CAN). We evaluated accuracy in relation to different analytical methods and various phenotypic predictors. As expected from statistical principles, we observe that quantitative traits are more sensitive to changes in the prediction models than categorical traits. We find that Random Forest or Linear Regression are generally the be

Correction of inter-scanner and within-subject variance in structural MRI based automated diagnosing.

Automated analysis of structural magnetic resonance images is a promising way to improve early detection of neurodegenerative brain diseases. Clinical applications of such methods involve multiple scanners with potentially different hardware and/or acquisition sequences and demographically heterogeneous groups. To improve classification performance, we propose to correct effects of subject-specific covariates (such as age, total intracranial volume, and sex) as well as effects of scanner by using a non-linear Gaussian process model. To test the efficacy of the correction, we performed classifi

Log in and breathe out: efficacy and cost-effectiveness of an online sleep training for teachers affected by work-related strain--study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Insomnia and work-related stress often co-occur. Both are associated with personal distress and diminished general functioning, as well as substantial socio-economic costs due to, for example, reduced productivity at the work place and absenteeism. Insomnia complaints by people experiencing work-related stress are correlated with a deficient cognitive detachment from work. Diffuse boundaries between work and private life can additionally complicate the use of recreational activities that facilitate cognitive detachment.Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia is effective but rare

[The role of psycho-oncology in cancer care in Japan].

With cancer the leading cause of death in Japan since 1981, the cancer care medical system is a critical issue. Psycho-oncology is expected to play an important role in cancer care. The "Basic Plan to Promote Cancer Control Programs" was launched in 2007 under the Cancer Control Act, and it noted the need to increase the number of psycho-oncologists in order to promote palliative care in the early phases of cancer treatment. Additionally, guidelines for new cancer care systems incorporating psychiatrists were established; these guidelines included provisions stipulating that designated cancer

Web-based VR training simulator for percutaneous rhizotomy.

Virtual Reality offers great potential for surgical training--yet is typically limited by the dedicated and expensive equipment required. Web-based VR has the potential to offer a much cheaper alternative, in which simulations of fundamental techniques are downloaded from a server to run within a web browser. The equipment requirement is modest--an Internet-connected PC or small workstation--and the simulation can be accessed worldwide. In a collaboration between computer scientists and neurosurgeons, we have studied the use of web-based VR to train neurosurgeons in Percutaneous Rhizotomy--a t

Factors associated with role strain among male nursing students: Insights from stress-coping and stress-buffering frameworks.

BACKGROUND: Men remain markedly underrepresented in the global nursing workforce, and male nursing students frequently encounter gender stereotypes, limited clinical opportunities, and inadequate professional support during their training. These gender-related experiences may hinder professional socialization and contribute to greater role strain. Although previous studies have examined stress and role strain among nursing students, comprehensive quantitative evidence on the prevalence and associated factors of role strain among male nursing students, particularly those in Western China, remai

Implementation of weight-inclusive care in primary care: a mixed-methods pilot study of a brief, behavior-focused provider training.

INTRODUCTION: Weight stigma remains prevalent in health care, adversely impacting patient outcomes and perpetuating health disparities. Weight-inclusive care (WIC) aims to improve health independent of weight through personalized and sustainable changes to health promoting behaviors and reduced weight stigma, yet little research has examined how to support its implementation in primary care. METHODS: This convergent parallel design mixed methods study piloted a brief pragmatic intervention to facilitate adoption of WIC at a federally qualified health center, evaluating feasibility, acceptabil

Effect of exercise interventions on hand grip and TUG in older adults: A network meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.

BACKGROUND: Increasing life expectancy has led to a growing older population and a higher prevalence of age-related declines in muscle mass, strength, and functional capacity, increasing the risk of frailty and sarcopenia. Although resistance and multicomponent exercise programs, particularly when combined with adequate protein and vitamin D intake, have demonstrated benefits, comparative evidence across exercise modalities remains limited. OBJECTIVE: To compare the effects of different exercise modalities on muscle strength and functional mobility in older adults through a network meta-analy

Skin cancer treatment environment and survivorship resources among sexual and gender minority patients: results of the OUT National Cancer Survey.

Sexual and gender minority (SGM) cancer survivors face unmet care needs in accessing cancer health information and social support despite high satisfaction with treatment. SGM patients often delay care due to concerns of discrimination in healthcare settings, though the care experiences of SGM skin cancer survivors are less known. SGM individuals, particularly sexual minority men, report higher skin cancer prevalence and related risk behaviors than heterosexual men. This study aims to describe SGM skin cancer survivors' perceptions of the care environment and availability of SGM-specific survi
