Modulation of Ion Distributions and Electroneutrality inside Nanopores by Ion Transport under Electric Fields.

Nanopores have broad applications in biosensing, energy conversion, and material separation, with their performance highly dependent on the ion distribution and transport. Here, molecular dynamics simulations were employed to systematically examine the ionic behaviors under varying surface charge densities, applied voltages, and solution concentrations. We focused on the static ion distribution without electric fields, as well as the dynamic distribution and transport of ions under electric fields. Based on the radial ion distributions, whose positional characteristics are determined solely by

Programming Ion Transport in Layered 2D Hybrid Membranes via Coordination-Occupation Coupling.

The sustainable separation of chemically distinct yet notoriously difficult-to-separate metal ions is a critical challenge for nuclear waste management and strategic resource recovery. Layered two-dimensional (2D) membranes offer energy-efficient alternatives to conventional extraction and adsorption technologies, yet their selectivity is often constrained by fixed and poorly tunable transport pathways. Here we introduce a coordination-occupation-coupled strategy to program ion transport in layered 2D hybrid membranes combining a confined polyacrylate network between layered vermiculite. Irrev

Interfacial ion transport in cellulose nanocrystal-based ionogels with low ionic liquid content.

This study investigates the gel formation of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) in a hydrophobic ionic liquid, 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide (HMIm-TFSI), with the addition of a co-solvent, dimethylformamide (DMF). CNC-based ionogels prepared with very low HMIm-TFSI contents (0.1-0.5 wt%) exhibit higher molar ionic conductivity than gels containing larger amounts of HMIm-TFSI. Application of electric fields to CNC mixtures containing 0.4 wt% HMIm-TFSI induces CNC alignment but does not enhance macroscopic ionic conductivity, indicating that conductivity is not governe

Operando X-ray mapping of ion transport and arrangement in a carbon-based supercapacitor electrode.

Position- and time-resolved X-ray transmission (XRT) and small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) are used to map out ion transport and nanoscale ion arrangement in an in-plane carbon-based supercapacitor working electrode with 1 M RbBr aqueous electrolyte. XRT reveals that the charge balancing mechanism depends on the electrode geometry, shifting from ion exchange to predominantly Rb+ transport as the distance between working electrode and counter electrode is increased. SAXS shows that, despite these differences in ion mobilisation, the nanoscale ion arrangement within the smallest carbon nanopor

Mechanistic insights into the pore-scale transport and retention of microplastics: bridging physical and geochemical controls.

Porous media with constricted throats and heterogeneous surfaces dictate microplastic transport and retention within the soil-groundwater continuum; however, the multifaceted mechanisms governing their subsurface accumulation remain poorly understood. This study quantifies microplastic migration pathways, adsorption hotspots, and breakthrough dynamics in aquifers using a high-resolution pore-scale Lagrangian framework that couples hydrodynamic drag, Brownian motion, dielectrophoretic (DEP) forces, and surface adsorption. Our results demonstrate that while Brownian perturbations fundamentally d

Diameter-dependent multiple proton jumps dictate hydronium and hydroxide transport in carbon nanotubes.

Nanofluidic channels impose extreme confinement on water, giving rise to unusual transport phenomena of the liquid. However, how the transport of hydroxide and hydronium ions is influenced by such confinement is still not fully understood. This study employs machine learning-accelerated simulations, based on the SCAN density functional, to investigate proton transfer dynamics in CNTs of varying diameters (0.8 nm to 2.8 nm). The extreme confinement of water inside a 0.8 nm CNT not only enhances the probability of multiple consecutive proton jumps, but also reverses the relative diffusion coeffi

Review of nanofluidic mass transport systems: engineering through physicochemical fields and interfacial properties.

Nanofluidic transport phenomena are central to both natural and engineered systems, enabling processes such as nutrient delivery and ion exchange in biological organisms, as well as controlled transport in advanced technological applications. At the nanoscale, these processes exhibit unique behaviors distinct from their microscale counterparts arising from strong coupling between physicochemical fields and interfacial effects. Precise modulation of nanofluidic transport can be achieved through external stimuli such as concentration, electric, thermal and pressure gradients as well as through s

Switchable band alignment in 2D-perovskite/WS2heterostructures for tunable exciton transport and valley polarization.

Van der Waals heterostructures integrated by two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) hold great potential for engineering promising exciton phenomena, particularly interlayer excitons (IXs) featuring extended lifetimes and permanent out-of-plane electric dipole moments. While electrically controllable IX emission has been extensively explored in TMD heterobilayers, reconfiguring their band alignment to achieve selected exciton states and exploit these states for novel excitonic functionalities remains an urgent challenge. Here, we demonstrate dynamic exciton control by ele

Reprogramming Ion-Transport Dimensionality via Crystal-Channel Engineering to Stabilize Zinc Anodes.

Unstable zinc (Zn) deposition in aqueous zinc-ion batteries is intrinsically linked to the interfacial confinement of Zn2+ transport, where ion migration is dominated by lateral diffusion along the electrode surface. This quasi-two-dimensional transport amplifies local electric-field and concentration heterogeneities, leading to uneven nucleation and dendritic growth. Here, we demonstrate that Zn deposition can be fundamentally regulated by reprogramming the dimensionality of ion transport. A three-dimensionally interpenetrated covalent organic framework (COF) incorporating crown-ether moietie

Efficient Proton Transport Within the Channels of an Ultra-Stable Hydrogen-Bonded Organic Framework.

This study successfully constructs an ionic liquid (IL)-confined hydrogen-bonded organic framework composite, designated as IL@PFC-1. The composite exhibits great proton conduction performance, achieving a high conductivity of 2.35 × 10-2 S cm-1 at 60 °C and 98% relative humidity. This represents an enhancement of approximately four orders of magnitude compared to pristine PFC-1. Furthermore, the material demonstrates good cyclic stability and long-term operational durability. Structural characterization and mechanistic analysis reveal that the confinement of the IL within the framework facili

Strong anharmonicity driven wave-like thermal transport and high thermoelectric performance in TlCu5Se3.

Thermal transport in crystalline solids generally occurs via particle-like phonon propagation. Here, we demonstrate the dominant unusual wave-like phonon transport and high thermoelectric figure-of-merit (zT) of ∼1.42 at 673 K in crystalline TlCu5Se3 due to the strong anharmonicity exerted by confined Cu dynamic disorder and Tl rattling. TlCu5Se3 shows an intrinsic ultralow lattice thermal conductivity of (κL) 0.3-0.2 W m-1 K-1 across the temperature range of 294-673 K. Density functional theory calculations and ab-initio molecular dynamics simulations reveal that strong lattice anharmonicity

Understanding Ionic Transport in LiFeO2 Polymorphs: Pathways to Enhancing Lithium-Ion Battery Performance.

We compare the ionic transport properties of six LiFeO2 polymorphs side by side to assess their potential as intercalation cathodes for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). Employing two established methods, Bond Valence Site Energy (BVSE) calculations and Crystal Analysis by Voronoi Decomposition (CAVD), with identical settings for all six structures, we analyze how structural variations affect Li-ion diffusion pathways, dimensionalities, and migration barriers. Within this comparison, the ordered rock salt phase shows the most favorable transport characteristics, combining the lowest energy barrier

Reducing Ion Transport Friction by Mitigated Diluent-Solvent Interaction for Sodium-Sulfur Battery.

Sodium sulfur batteries have emerged as a promising candidate for large-scale energy storage, while their practical implementation is severely hindered by sodium dendrite growth, unstable solid-electrolyte interphase (SEI) films, and the polysulfide shuttle effect. Herein, we design a novel local high-concentration electrolyte (LHCE-DEE/TTEE) to balance the ionic conductivity and interfacial stability. This is achieved by replacing the high solvating DME with the moderate solvating diethyl ether (DEE) to mitigate the diluent-solvent interaction and reduce the local dynamic friction for Na+ tra

CRISPR-Programmable Nanoparticle Transport in Salt-Gated Porous Media for Visual DNA Detection.

Paper-based diagnostics typically treat porous cellulose as a passive capillary medium, with nanoparticle transport governed by channel geometry and capture chemistry. Here we show that CRISPR-programmable nanoparticle surface chemistry can actively regulate transport in paper through a salt-activated adhesion mechanism. Gold nanoparticles functionalized with hydrophobic Cy5-labeled DNA exhibit strong adhesion to cellulose fibers at elevated ionic strength (~1.5 M local NaCl generated upon rehydration of preloaded salt), whereas particles lacking hydrophobic domains migrate freely. This phenom

Transport characteristics of bulk and edge states in an off-diagonal Aubry-André-Harper chain.

We investigate quantum transport in an off-diagonal Aubry-André-Harper chain. For a commensurate hopping modulation, the periodic hopping pattern can generate internal boundaries that strongly influence the transmission characteristics. We show that edge, in-band bulk, and band-edge bulk states can be distinguished through their distinct transport signatures. In particular, bulk states near the band edges exhibit transport characteristics similar to those of edge states, with weak dependence on system size, whereas in-band bulk states display pronounced size-dependent oscillations. We further

Abscisic acid activity across tissues: Linking biosynthesis, transport, and target-site action.

Abscisic acid (ABA) coordinates plant development and water-stress responses through mechanisms that extend beyond local biosynthesis and signaling. Increasing evidence indicates that ABA function depends on the spatial organization of hormone production, transport, catabolism, and perception across tissues. In this review, we highlight how ABA is synthesized mainly in vascular-associated cells and redistributed to distal target sites in leaves, roots, and seeds. We discuss recent findings showing that both ABA and its precursor, abscisic aldehyde, can move between tissues, thereby expanding t

Renal Phosphate Reabsorption in Humans Depends on at Least Three Distinct Transporters Unlike in Mice.

AIM: Kidney excretion of phosphate is the gatekeeper of systemic phosphate homeostasis as evident from inborn and acquired diseases. Renal phosphate transporters are a promising target for phosphate-lowering drugs, but molecular details of human kidney phosphate handling are largely unknown. Here, we aim to understand the dependency of renal phosphate transport on species, age, and sex. METHODS: We used a combination of transporter-specific inhibitors and radioactive flux measurements in isolated BBM vesicles prepared from human and murine kidneys. We included human female and male neonates (

Interfacility Transport of Emergency Department Patients by Helicopter Air Ambulance: A Simulation Study of Utilization.

OBJECTIVE: Interfacility transports by helicopter air ambulance (IFT-HAAs) are requested for critically ill and injured patients. Requests for patient transport may originate from several settings within the referring facility: the emergency department (ED), procedural areas (such as a cardiac catheterization laboratory), or inpatient units such as an intensive care unit. Existing literature has not clarified the contributions of the ED compared with other facility settings. METHODS: In this retrospective modeling study, we used data from the Federal Aviation Administration, National Hospital

An explainable machine learning surrogate framework for colloid-facilitated contaminant transport in porous media.

Colloids act as important transport carriers in subsurface environments, facilitating the migration of strongly sorbing contaminants and significantly influencing breakthrough curve (BTC) in porous media. This study develops a machine-learning surrogate model capable of accurately reproducing BTCs generated by an equilibrium colloid-facilitated contaminant transport model over a wide range of transport conditions. The mechanistic model was first validated against the experimental phenanthrene transport data, demonstrating excellent agreement under both colloid-free and colloid-present conditio
