Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL): literature review with a focus on occupational medicine.

According to the Ministry of Health (2006), Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL) is hearing loss caused by prolonged exposure to noise. It is characterized as sensorineural hearing loss and is usually bilateral, irreversible, and progressive while the exposure to noise continues. A NIHL is a predictable and preventable disease with an epidemiologically relevant prevalence in urban communities. The hearing loss begins and predominates in the frequencies of 3, 4, and 6 kHz and eventually progresses to 8, 2, 1, 0.5, and 0.25 kHz. In Brazil, regulatory standard 15 limits the exposure to continuous no

Odds ratio of risk factors for oral submucous fibrosis in a case control model.

Our aim was to calculate the odds ratio (OR) of various epidemiological, social, behavioural, and dietary risk factors for oral submucous fibrosis in a population-based case control study. We did this in rural and urban Lucknow by organising oral health camps in the community, where a total of 3136 subjects were enrolled. Panmasala, a dry commercial preparation containing areca nut, slaked lime, catechu, and condiments, with or without tobacco, was the most important aetiological factor for the disease. The 95% confidence interval (CI) of the OR for tobaccoless panmasala ranged from 4.77 to 6.

Time-series studies on air pollution and daily outpatient visits for allergic rhinitis in Beijing, China.

To investigate the effects of urban air quality change on health, we carried out a time-series analysis of daily general practitioner consultations for allergic rhinitis (AR) in Beijing, China. Non-parametric generalized additive model (GAM) was used to analyze the highly non-linear or non-monotonic exposure-response relationship between three air pollutants (namely PM₁₀, SO₂ and NO₂) and daily outpatient visits for AR, after controlling for long term trends, the 'day of the week' effect and confounding meteorological factors. The objective of this study was to assess the possible effects of a

Correlates of living alone among single elderly Chinese immigrants in Canada.

According to traditional Chinese culture, families will care for their elderly. Therefore, it appears to be uncommon for elderly Chinese to live alone. This study examines the correlates for single elderly Chinese immigrants in Canada to live alone. Using a probability sample of single elderly Chinese immigrants (N = 660) in seven urban centers, hierarchical logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze the effects of socio-demographic resource variables, health, and cultural variables. The findings show that 39.1% of single elderly Chinese immigrants reported to be living alone. Varia

Facilitating well-being through music for older people with special needs.

This study examines the importance of music in facilitating well-being for older people who have special needs and discusses how music can contribute to well-being and quality of life. The data derive from qualitative interviews with a sample of older Australians aged 60 years and above who live in rural and urban settings. The findings reveal music can provide many people with ways of feeling competent, feeling less isolated, connecting with other people, and helping in the maintenance of a greater sense of good health. Music facilitates meaning in people's lives and is associated with a pers

Comparable seropositivity for ascariasis and toxocariasis in tropical slum children.

The seropositivities for infection by Ascaris lumbricoides and Toxocara canis were determined in children (1-15 years old) of a slum area of Caracas, Venezuela, and the levels that indicate the presence of active infection were defined. In children aged from 1 to 3 years, approximately 10% were positive for either parasite, and this figure increased to about 30% in 4- to 6-year-olds. For toxocariasis, the percentage of positivity remained at this level up to the age of 15 years. Whilst the positivity in children 10-15 years of age was comparable for Ascaris and Toxocara, a peak of positivity (

Dietary intake of vitamin A in African pre-school children in Umlazi, South Africa.

Vitamin A deficiency has been shown to have an impact on morbidity and mortality and therefore prevalence rates are important for public health policy. We report the use of a 7-day recall, dietary questionnaire, which was validated and administered to 203 randomly selected urban African pre-school children in Umlazi, South Africa. Common vitamin A containing foods eaten were leafy green vegetables, pumpkin, sweet potato, mangoes and chicken liver. Although the mean daily intake of vitamin A was adequate, 19 children had intakes below the recommended dietary allowance (RDA). Thirteen of these c

A comparative study of the growth status of children with and without SS disease at Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria.

An anthropometric study was conducted to determine the growth status of 1698 children with and without SS disease. Of the total subjects, 979 (57.7%) were from the University of Ilorin elementary school. Children with SS disease made up 42.3% (719) of the total sample. Children with SS disease had anthropometric values which were lower than the 50th percentile of the Unilorin sample. Of all the parameters assessed, the weight-for-age for children with SS disease was particularly deficient compared with that of the Unilorin pupils and with the Harvard standard. Although subjects were from the s

Adolescents' mental health and the Greek family: preventive aspects.

Preventive mental health measures can be properly planned only if the various factors leading to the adolescent's personality structure are extensively investigated. Starting with the specific attitudes of a couple towards genetic counselling, the disadvantages of urbanization and of the dissolution of the traditional extended family are discussed with regard to their effect on the younger members. Data are produced concerning the child-rearing practices of Greek in comparison to American parents and their effect on the adolescent's emotional life. Extreme dependence on the family, pressure fo

Selective primary health care: strategies for control of disease in the developing world. XX. Typhoid fever.

The incidence of typhoid fever remains unacceptably high in developing countries. Because Salmonella typhi is disseminated by carriers, there is an urgent need to increase the rate of detection of carriers and to decrease the risk they pose to their communities. In urban areas where sewage disposal is lacking or inadequate, public water supplies are contaminated and typhoid fever is common. The contamination of food by carriers is the second commonest route of infection. Water purification processes lead to a rapid decline in the incidence of the disease; thus, many developing countries hope t

Crosslinking of nucleic acids and proteins by bisulfite.

Sodium bisulfite is a food and beverage additive. It is also a salt of the urban air pollutant, sulfur dioxide. Bisulfite catalyzes, at neutral pH and physiological temperatures, the transamination reactions of cytosine derivatives with amines. The products of the reactions are N4-substituted cytosines. Both the alpha and epsilon-amino groups of L-lysine react with cytosine, and its nucleosides, in the presence of bisulfite. Bisulfite catalyzes the binding of cytosine to polylysine, lysine to polycytidylic acid, and polysine to polycytidylic acid. Polylysine crosslinks with heat-denatured, but

The effect of the COVID-19 pandemic on health anxiety and cyberchondria levels of university students.

OBJECTIVE: Our study hypothesizes that the fear and panic of COVID-19 triggers cyberchondria (CYB) in students thus increasing health anxiety. In this way, we aim to determine the effect of the belief of previously having had and not having had COVID-19 on health anxiety and CYB levels of the university students. METHODS: Our study is a descriptive cross-sectional study. The target population of our study consisted of 950 students who were continuing their education in the Vocational School of Health Services, an associate degree program of a university, and the samples consisted of 794 stude

Evidence for a curriculum review for secondary schools in Fiji.

This pilot study aimed to gather information about knowledge of and attitudes towards a range of health and dietary issues, with a focus on obesity and NCDs. It involved 967 children equally distributed between Form 3 (age range 13-14) and form 5 (age range 16-17) from three schools, one from each of the health divisions in Fiji. It was found that almost half of the sample group were of "normal" weight, whilst 18% were classified as "overweight" and 16% as "obese". Half the children took an inactive mode of transport (bus/car) to school and a higher percentage of those who went by bus/car were

Barriers and facilitators to maternal death surveillance and response at a busy urban National Referral Hospital in Uganda.

Background: Preventable maternal and newborn deaths remain a global concern, particularly in low- and- middle-income countries (LMICs) Timely maternal death surveillance and response (MDSR) is a recommended strategy to account for such deaths through identifying contextual factors that contributed to the deaths to inform recommendations to implement in order to reduce future deaths. Implementation of MDSR is still suboptimal due to barriers such as inadequate skills and leadership to support MDSR. With the leadership of WHO and UNFPA, there is momentum to roll out MDSR, however, the barriers a
