Sacral Neuromodulator Surgery: Is There an Ideal Candidate?

Objectives Sacral neuromodulator implantation (SNM) is an advanced line of treatment for patients with overactive bladder (OAB) or underactive bladder (UAB). The procedure has two steps; patients who respond to temporary SNM proceed to permanent implantation. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the overall effectiveness of SNM in our patient population, as well as to identify potential correlations between patient demographics, clinical characteristics, and procedural outcomes. Additionally, we examined factors that may influence patient-reported satisfaction following SNM implantation. Method

The usefulness of the surgical knowledge and skills acquired via the university curriculum for doctors' medical practice several years after graduation.

BACKGROUND: Teaching surgery during university curriculum comprises transferring theoretical knowledge traditionally and simultaneously acquiring manual skills, i.e., suturing, stitch removal, limb immobilization, catheterization, and assisting operations. Observations of doctors several years after graduation led to the reflection that teachers' ideas about surgical knowledge and skills that are useful in daily practice frequently fail to meet the facts of the case. The objective of this study was to determine which part of the surgical knowledge and skills taught via the university surgical

Device-related sources of bacteraemia in English hospitals--opportunities for the prevention of hospital-acquired bacteraemia.

Between 1997 and 2001, 17 teaching and 56 non-teaching acute English hospitals conducted hospital-wide surveillance of hospital-acquired bacteraemia (HAB) using a standard protocol drawn up by the Nosocomial Infection National Surveillance Scheme (NINSS). The sources of organisms, the incidence of device-related HAB, and the distribution of HABs from individual device-related sources by specialty and type of hospital were determined for 6,956 HABs in order to identify where resources should best be targeted to reduce these infections. The overall incidence of HAB was higher in teaching than in

A modified semi-automated technique for in vitro assessment of encrustation of materials.

In vitro study of encrustation is an important part of assessment of materials as potential alloplasts or devices in the urinary tract. This modified semi-automated technique comprises a circular reaction chamber with an encrustation mixture, the level of which is controlled by a float switch which operates the exit peristaltic pump. The composition of the reactants used simulates infected urine with alkaline pH. Results of a preliminary study of the deposits by scanning electron micrography (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) microanalysis are consistent with struvite and hydroxyapatite,

Factors Associated With Removal of Urinary Catheters After Surgery.

Publicly available data from the Centers for Medicaid & Medicare Services were used to analyze factors associated with removal of the urinary catheter within 48 hours after surgery in 59 Massachusetts hospitals. Three factors explained 36% of the variance in postoperative urinary catheter removal: fewer falls per 1000 discharges, better nurse-patient communication, and higher percentage of Medicare patients. Timely urinary catheter removal was significantly greater in hospitals with more licensed nursing hours per patient day.

Current concepts of the acontractile bladder.

The acontractile bladder (AcB) is a urodynamic-based diagnosis wherein the bladder is unable to demonstrate any contraction during a pressure flow study. Although it is often grouped with underactive bladder, it is a unique phenomenon and should be investigated independently. The purpose of the present review was to examine the current literature on AcB regarding its pathology, diagnosis, current management guidelines, and future developments. We performed a review of the PubMed database, classifying the evidence for AcB pathology, diagnosis, treatment, and potential future treatments. Over th

Robotic-assisted laparoscopic catheterizable bladder augment: a novel approach to treat recurrent bladder neck contracture following radical prostatectomy.

INTRODUCTION: Bladder neck contractures (BNC) are an uncommon complication following radical prostatectomy. Occasionally, BNCs can be refractory to endoscopic approaches. We describe the effectiveness of a novel robotic-assisted laparoscopic catheterizable bladder augment in treating recalcitrant BNCs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Patients undergoing robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy (RALP) between 2004-2014 who developed a postoperative BNC were identified. We documented our experience with robotic-assisted laparoscopic catheterizable bladder augment for recalcitrant BNCs. Total operative tim
