Subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) is a devastating condition associated with high mortality and morbidity. Vascular malformations are the most common cause of non-traumatic SAH in patients less than 40 years old. We present a case of a 37-year-old male who presented on the second day of ictus with left-sided hemiparesis and a low Glasgow Coma Scale score (E1VTM5). Non-contrast computed tomography (NCCT) scan of the head was suggestive of right basi-frontal hematoma, SAH, and hydrocephalus (HCP). Given SAH with HCP, the neurosurgical team initially placed a left frontal Ommaya. Cerebral digital sub

PURPOSE: Insomnia is a common psychiatric disorder that has oxidative and degenerative effects on the brain. It is thought that the brain's processes affect the retina through their synaptic connections. However, the effects of sleep disorders on the retina and choroid are not fully understood. We aimed to investigate the impact of insomnia on retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), central foveal thickness, retinal layers, and choroidal thickness.
METHODS: The right eye of 16 healthy controls and 15 patients with insomnia complaints for 3 months, no history of psychiatric drug use, and an Insomnia

Avascular necrosis (AVN), also known as osteonecrosis, ischemic bone necrosis, or aseptic necrosis, is a progressive bone disease marked by the deterioration of bone tissue due to compromised blood flow in the subchondral region. AVN is typically caused by disruptions in vascular supply, intravascular blockages, or pressure on blood vessels, leading to diminished circulation. This condition predominantly affects the long-bone epiphysis in weight-bearing joints, particularly impacting the femoral head. The ongoing global health challenge posed by the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has rai

Renovascular hypertension (RH), a secondary hypertension, can significantly impact heart health, resulting in heart damage and dysfunction, thereby elevating the risk of cardiovascular diseases. Coniferol (CA), which has vascular relaxation properties, is expected to be able to treat hypertension-related diseases. However, its potential effects on cardiac function after RH remain unclear. In this study, in combination with network pharmacology, the antihypertensive and cardioprotective effects of CA in a two-kidney, one-clip (2K1C) mice model and its ability to mitigate angiotensin II (Ang II)

Critical limb ischemia (CLI) occurs when blood flow is restricted through the arteries, resulting in ulcers, necrosis, and chronic wounds in the downstream extremities. The development of collateral arterioles (i.e. arteriogenesis), either by remodeling of pre-existing vascular networks or de novo growth of new vessels, can prevent or reverse ischemic damage, but it remains challenging to stimulate collateral arteriole development in a therapeutic context. Here, we show that a gelatin-based hydrogel, devoid of growth factors or encapsulated cells, promotes arteriogenesis and attenuates tissue

BACKGROUND: Leaflet calcification contributes to the development and progression of aortic valve stenosis. Vitamin K activates inhibitors of vascular calcification and may modulate inflammation and skeletal bone loss. Therefore, we aimed to determine whether higher dietary intakes of vitamin K1 are associated with a lower incidence of aortic stenosis.
METHODS: In the Danish Diet, Cancer and Health study, participants aged 50 to 64 years completed a 192-item food frequency questionnaire at baseline, from which habitual intakes of vitamin K1 were estimated. Participants were prospectively follo

Colony forming unit-Hill (CFU-Hill) colonies were established to serve as a sensitive biomarker for vascular health. In animals, the overexpression of miR-7-5p was shown to be pro-atherogenic and associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. In a MERIT study, we aimed to explore the role of miR-7-5p expression in CFU-Hill colonies in type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) and the effect of metformin in subclinical CVD. The expression of miR-7-5p in CFU-Hill colonies in 29 T1DM subjects without CVD and 20 healthy controls (HC) was measured. Metformin was administered to T1DM subjects fo

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) poses the leading threats to human health and life, and their occurrence and severity are associated with exposure to environmental pollutants. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a group of widely used industrial chemicals, are characterized by persistence, long-distance migration, bioaccumulation, and toxicity. Some PFAS, particularly perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorohexanesulfonic acid (PFHxS), have been banned, leaving only legacy exposure to the environment and human body, while a number of novel PFAS alt

With increasing age, structural changes occur in the eye and brain. Neuronal death, inflammation, vascular disruption, and microglial activation are among many of the pathological changes that can occur during ageing. Furthermore, ageing individuals are at increased risk of developing neurodegenerative diseases in these organs, including Alzheimer's disease (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), glaucoma and age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Although these diseases pose a significant global public health burden, current treatment options focus on slowing disease progression and symptomatic cont

AIMS: Sudden cardiac death (SCD) is defined as natural unexpected death in witnessed cases occurring < 1 h and in unwitnessed cases as last seen alive < 24 h. SCD due to ischaemic heart disease (IHD) is frequent in older age groups; in younger people genetic cardiac causes, including channelopathies and cardiomyopathies, are more frequent. This study aimed to present the causes of SCD from a large specialist pathology registry.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Cases were examined macroscopically and microscopically by two expert cardiac pathologists. The hearts from 7214 SCD cases were examined between 1

Pulmonary hypertension (PH) is a hemodynamic and pathophysiologic state present in many cardiovascular, respiratory, and systemic diseases. PH is considered to have a higher risk of cardiovascular events and mortality. The most common type of functional tricuspid regurgitation (FTR) is associated with PH. The aim of this study was to evaluate the association between FTR severity and mortality in PH in western China. This is a retrospective analysis in PH patients and all patients underwent right-heart catheterization (RHC) for hemodynamic measurements. The FTR severity was determined according

With the increasing aging population worldwide, the incidence of senile cognitive impairment (CI) is increasing, posing a serious threat to the health of elderly persons. Despite developing new drugs aimed at improving CI, progress in this regard has been insufficient. Natural preparations derived from plants have become an unparalleled resource for developing new drugs. Puerariae radix (PR) has a long history as Chinese herbal medicine. PR is rich in various chemical components such as isoflavones, triterpenes, and saponins. The isoflavones (puerarin, daidzein, formononetin, and genistein) ex

Inflammation is a multifaceted biological reaction to a wide range of stimuli, and it has been linked to the onset and progression of chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Inflammatory markers found in the blood, including C-reactive protein, serum amyloid A, fibrinogen, plasma viscosity, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, interleukin-6, and soluble adhesion molecules (like intercellular adhesion molecule-1 and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1), are risk factors for cardiovascular diseases such as coronary heart disease, stroke, and peripheral arterial disease. These mark

The Fusarium oxysporum species complex (FOSC) includes both plant and human pathogens that cause devastating plant vascular wilt diseases and threaten public health. Each F. oxysporum genome comprises core chromosomes (CCs) for housekeeping functions and accessory chromosomes (ACs) that contribute to host-specific adaptation. This study inspects global transcription factor profiles (TFomes) and their potential roles in coordinating CC and AC functions to accomplish host-specific interactions. Remarkably, we found a clear positive correlation between the sizes of TFomes and the proteomes of an

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Most dengue infections are asymptomatic, and some of them develop haemorrhagic manifestations with or without shock. However, dengue can sometimes present with very rare complications like pyomyositis.
CASE PRESENTATION: A healthy 27-year-old male, presented with a 2-day fever, confirmed to be dengue through a positive non-structural protein 1 test. Despite initial symptomatic management, his condition worsened and he was hospitalized. Leucocyte and platelet counts dropped to the lowest value on the seventh day of illness, followed by the gradual development of ch

BACKGROUND: Typical symptoms of uncomplicated dengue fever (DF) include headache, muscle pains, rash, cough, and vomiting. A proportion of cases progress to severe dengue hemorrhagic fever (DHF), associated with increased vascular permeability, thrombocytopenia, and hemorrhages. Progression to severe dengue is difficult to diagnose at the onset of fever, which complicates patient triage, posing a socio-economic burden on health systems.
METHODS: To identify parameters associated with protection and susceptibility to DHF, we pursued a systems immunology approach integrating plasma chemokine pr
