Associations between retinal nerve fiber layer abnormalities and optic nerve examination.

OBJECTIVE: Retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) abnormalities detected by optical coherence tomography (OCT) are useful markers for axonal loss and visual dysfunction in multiple sclerosis (MS), but their role in routine clinical management is not well-studied. METHODS: Clinical and OCT examinations were performed on 240 patients attending a neurology clinic. Using OCT 5th percentile to define abnormal RNFL thickness, we compared eyes classified by neurologists as having optic atrophy to RNFL thickness, and afferent pupillary defect (APD) to RNFL thickness ratios of eye pairs. RESULTS: Mean RNFL

Association of transseptal punctures with isolated migraine aura in patients undergoing catheter ablation of cardiac arrhythmias.

BACKGROUND: Transseptal catheterization (TSC) is performed during catheter ablation involving the lefthand side of the heart. TSC causes a transient iatrogenic atrial septal defect that can predispose patients to migraine episodes. However, isolated migraine aura episodes in patients undergoing TSC have not been described. METHODS: Five hundred seventy-one procedures involving TSC were performed over a 3-year duration. Of these, 3 patients presented with visual symptoms in the first month after the procedure. One patient underwent a TSC during catheter ablation of left-sided accessory pathway

Neuromuscular excitability changes in the vastus medialis following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction.

PURPOSE: Quadriceps weakness following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR) is prevalent despite intensive rehabilitation. Diminished neuromuscular excitability is one potential factor that may limit muscular recovery following injury or surgery. The H-reflex provides a measure of alpha motorneuron (neuromuscular) excitability in the sensory-motor pathway of the respective muscle and nerve. To date the vastus medialis (VM) and soleus (SOL) H-reflexes have been examined primarily in control subjects with induced knee joint effusion. This prospective, randomized clinical trial evalua

Unilateral adult malignant optic nerve glioma.

INTRODUCTION: Adult malignant optic nerve gliomas are rare and rapidly fatal visual pathway tumours. They represent a clinical entity different from the more common childhood benign optic nerve gliomas, which are frequently associated with neurofibromatosis I. CASE REPORT: A 61-year-old woman presented with rapidly progressing right vision loss, lower altitudinal visual field defect and papilloedema. MRI showed intraorbital and intracranial swelling of the right optic nerve. Resection of the intracranial part of the right optic nerve up to the chiasm revealed anaplastic astrocytoma grade III.

An increased serum level of free Apo(a) in renal patients is more striking than that of Lp(a) and is influenced by homocysteine.

PURPOSE: Musical hallucinations (MH) are a subset of complex auditory hallucinations in which individuals perceive music in the absence of an external auditory stimulus. It is a rare phenomenon, first described by Ballinger in 1846, with diverse presentations from familiar childhood melodies to a simple pitch which evolved into the harmonies Robert Schumann incorporated in his sole Violin Concerto. VIEWS: This uncommon phenomenon has diverse etiologies, including psychiatric and neurological backgrounds, which guide its classification and methods of treatment. The pathophysiological basis of

Prenatal ultrasonography diagnosis of fetal microtia with tympanic ring agenesis: a case report.

Microtia is frequently accompanied by middle ear anomalies, among which absence of the tympanic ring is relatively rare and seldom diagnosed prenatally. Previous reports have mainly focused on external ear anomalies, with limited experience in the prenatal diagnosis and postnatal verification of middle ear osseous abnormalities. We report a case of fetal microtia complicated by absence of the tympanic ring diagnosed by prenatal ultrasound. A systematic examination at 24 weeks of gestation revealed abnormal unilateral auricular morphology, with size and shape inconsistent with a normal fetus at

A mitochondria-targeted ratiometric fluorescent probe for visualizing NO generation coupled with mitochondrial pH variations during autophagy.

Autophagy is a vital cytoprotective pathway against oxidative stress, and the regulatory function of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in autophagy has been thoroughly investigated. However, nitric oxide (NO), a representative reactive nitrogen species, exerts dual contradictory effects on autophagy, and the underlying reason for such discrepancy remains ambiguous. Existing studies indicate that the biological activity of NO is highly dependent on mitochondrial microenvironmental pH; the pH fluctuation during autophagy further modulates NO-mediated protein modification and downstream autophagic si

SFENet: A Spatial-Frequency Dual-Branch Image Quality Enhancement Network for Breast Ultrasound Tumor Segmentation.

Breast ultrasound (BUS) images are commonly degraded by speckle noise, intensity inhomogeneity, acoustic shadowing, and low contrast, while breast tumors often exhibit irregular morphology, heterogeneous echogenicity, and blurred boundaries. These factors make accurate lesion segmentation difficult. We propose SFENet, an end-to-end spatial-frequency dual-branch image quality enhancement network for BUS tumor segmentation. Built on a U-shaped segmentation framework, SFENet jointly models lesion morphology, global spectral responses, and local image-quality degradation through a wavelet-frequenc

Percutaneous Lymphatic Contrast-enhanced Ultrasound for Preoperative Localization in Stage 2-3 Lymphedema: A Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Lymphaticovenous anastomosis (LVA) is a crucial surgical method for treating lymphedema by reconstructing lymphatic pathways. The success and efficacy of LVA rely on accurate preoperative localization of functional lymphatic vessels. This study investigated the use of percutaneous lymphatic contrast-enhanced ultrasound (PL-CEUS) to identify and localize these vessels in patients with the International Society of Lymphology stages 2-3 before LVA. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study included 234 patients with 256 limbs affected by International Society of Lymphology stage 2-3 l

Language reorganization in brain arteriovenous malformations with fiber-based regional functional connectivity.

Structure and function changes of language function processing in brain arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) have been investigated, while the alterations of brain connectivity remain unexplored. This study aims to investigate language network reorganization in AVMs using fiber-based regional functional connectivity (FBRFC), which integrates structural and functional information. 34 right-handed patients with left-hemispheric AVMs and 27 healthy controls underwent task-based functional magnetic resonance imaging during three language paradigms: visual synonym judgment, oral word reading, and aud

YOLO12 Down Feather Quality Classification Method Based on A2C2f-CGLU Feature Enhancement.

Manual sorting is still the mainstream scheme for component identification in down feather quality evaluation, which suffers from low detection efficiency and poor stability. To address these drawbacks, this paper proposes a fine-grained component detection algorithm based on YOLO12 for down feather quality classification. Five typical down feather components are selected as detection targets, including discolored feathers, down filaments, immature down, feathers and pure down. A dedicated down feather object detection dataset consisting of 1140 images is established accordingly. To improve th

Resting-State Brain Activity, Functional Connectivity, and Orbital Imaging Changes in Restrictive Myopathy Associated with Thyroid Eye Disease.

PURPOSE: Restrictive myopathy is an important subtype of thyroid eye disease (TED) characterized by ocular motility restriction. Emerging evidence has indicated brain remodeling in TED restrictive myopathy, yet the underlying mechanism remains elusive. Therefore, this study aims to investigate brain activity and extraocular muscles (EOMs) abnormalities in TED restrictive myopathy, providing a deeper insight into the relationship between ocular motility restriction and brain functional changes. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This prospective observational study recruited 45 TED patients recruited (28 w

Trans-Synaptic Retrograde Retinal Degeneration After Post-Chiasmatic Stroke: A Systematic Review of Empirical Evidence.

BACKGROUND: Retrograde trans-synaptic degeneration (RTSD) refers to the progressive loss of retinal cells following damage to the post-geniculate visual pathway. The advent of optical coherence tomography (OCT) has allowed the measurement and quantification of retinal layers, in turn providing compelling evidence of RTSD in stroke patients and highlighting that assessing the temporal and functional evolution of RTSD has important clinical implications. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review up until 7th July 2025 to summarize the OCT evidence on post-stroke RTSD. Eligible articles on this

Pituitary Apoplexy Without Chiasmal Compression Presenting With Radiographic Oculomotor Nerve Compression in a Prolactinoma: A Case Report.

Pituitary apoplexy is a rare but potentially life-threatening complication of pituitary macroadenomas that classically presents with acute headache, visual field deficits, and signs of optic chiasm compression. However, atypical neuro-ophthalmologic presentations without chiasmal involvement may delay recognition and treatment. This report highlights an unusual presentation of pituitary apoplexy associated with radiographic oculomotor nerve compression secondary to cavernous sinus extension in a patient with prolactinoma. We report the case of a 29-year-old Hispanic woman who presented to the
