The aim of the present study was to evaluate the influence of physical exercise on seminal parameters of male athletes with varicocele. Sixty healthy male volunteers (athletes and non-athletes, n = 30 + 30) and 60 volunteers affected by varicocele (athletes and non-athletes, n = 30 + 30) were randomly selected for a clinical study. All subjects provided at least two semen samples for routine microscopic analysis. RATIONALE: Sibutramine (Meridia) is a serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitor marketed for weight control. Previous studies demonstrated low abuse potential for 20 and 30 mg sibutramine (doses near the therapeutic range); however, no data existed on supratherapeutic doses. Some reports have suggested occurrence of expiratory upper airway narrowing in patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) during sleep and in awake humans during respiratory muscles relaxation. This is compatible with the hypothesis that upper airway muscles are activated during expiration. BACKGROUND: Recently, hydrochlorothiazide has been shown to relax vascular smooth muscle in vitro in clinically relevant concentrations by the opening of calcium-activated potassium channels, leading to hyperpolarization and consequent closing of voltage-operated calcium channels. Long-term administration of hydrochlorothiazide reduces peripheral vascular resistance in vivo in man.
