Comparison of the effect of intrathecal administration of clonidine and yohimbine on the locomotion of intact and spinal cats.

Several studies have shown that noradrenergic mechanisms are important for locomotion. For instance, L-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) can initiate "fictive" locomotion in immobilized acutely spinalized cats and alpha(2)-noradrenergic agonists, such as 2,6,-dichloro-N-2-imidazolidinylid-enebenzenamine (clonidine), can induce treadmill locomotion soon after spinalization. However, the activation of noradrenergic receptors may be not essential for the basic locomotor rhythmicity because chronic spinal cats can walk with the hindlimbs on a treadmill in the absence of noradrenergic stimulation bec

The effect of intrapulmonary percussive ventilation on clinical parameters and the deposition of inhalation products in patients with stable COPD.

BACKGROUND: Intrapulmonary percussive ventilation (IPV) has demonstrated efficacy in acute settings for treating chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations. Its routine use as an airway clearance technique in stable COPD patients lacks strong scientific support. PURPOSE: This study assessed the impact of 4 weeks of IPV treatment in nonhospitalized patients with stable COPD by clinical endpoints, parameters obtained by quantified CT-thorax and a deposition study of inhaled compounds. METHODS: In this prospective study, ten stable patients with severe to very severe COPD were rec

Rehabilitating patients with hepatopulmonary syndrome using living-related orthotopic liver transplant: a case report.

The objective of this study was to rehabilitate a patient with hepatopulmonary syndrome (HPS) who underwent living-related orthotopic liver transplantation (LT). HPS is rare; it presents severe complication in patients with liver disease. A 17-year-old woman with HPS developed portal hypertension after undergoing Kasai's surgery for congenital biliary atresia and underwent a living-related orthotopic LT. After LT, her allograft functioned well, but she continued to have hypoxemia and orthodeoxia. She was referred for rehabilitation for disuse atrophy, contracture of hip and shoulder joints, le

Longitudinal Motor Function Changes in Adults With Late-Onset Pompe Disease: Key Determinants and Clinical Thresholds.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Late-onset Pompe disease (LOPD) causes progressive muscle weakness, locomotor dysfunction, and postural instability, severely affecting quality of life. Longitudinal data on these changes remain limited. We quantified changes in muscle strength, locomotor performance, and postural control in adults with LOPD vs controls, aiming to identify the most sensitive motor parameters and determine key muscle contributors to locomotor and postural decline. We also defined clinically meaningful thresholds (minimal clinically important difference [MCID]) for sensitive parameters

Acute effects of lateral wedge insoles on lower limb joint kinematics and symptoms in women with medial compartment knee osteoarthritis during walking.

BACKGROUND: Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) is a debilitating condition affecting knee function and mobility. Lateral wedge insoles (LWIs) are used to manage KOA, but their effects in different footwear types need further investigation. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of LWIs on lower-limb joint kinematics in KOA patients, comparing walking barefoot (Bare), conventional sandals with LWIs (SAN), and combo slipper socks with LWIs (SOC), a novel footwear design. METHODS: 23 female patients with bilateral medial compartment KOA (K-L grades II-III), aged 45-65 years, walked in three conditions:

Survival in patients with CKD 3-5 after 12 months of exercise training - a post-hoc analysis of the RENEXC trial.

BACKGROUND: Physical performance is low and physical activity declines in people with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Both factors are associated with decreased survival. Our hypothesis was that improved physical performance after 12 months of exercise training would result in better survival in patients with CKD stages 3 to 5 not on kidney replacement therapy (KRT). Our aims in this study were to investigate the survival effects of (1) baseline physical performance and (2) physical performance after 12 months of exercise training. METHODS: This is a post-hoc analysis of the RENEXC trial, a ran

The statistical building blocks of animal movement simulations.

Animal movement plays a key role in many ecological processes and has a direct influence on an individual's fitness at several scales of analysis (i.e., next-step, subdiel, day-by-day, seasonal). This highlights the need to dissect movement behavior at different spatio-temporal scales and develop hierarchical movement tools for generating realistic tracks to supplement existing single-temporal-scale simulators. In reality, animal movement paths are a concatenation of fundamental movement elements (FuMEs: e.g., a step or wing flap), but these are not generally extractable from a relocation time

Differences in 6-Minute Walk Distance Across Heart Disease Recurrence Risk Levels in Cardiac Rehab Patients.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Cardiac rehabilitation (CR) programs are multi-component interventions comprising structured strength and cardiovascular exercise training, psychological support, education, and therapies to promote positive lifestyle changes. This study aimed to determine if there are differences in the 6-minute walk distance (6MWD) across risk groups for recurrent heart disease. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study used existing data collected from electronic medical records. The 6-minute walk distance was measured at baseline (pre-6MWD) and upon the completion of the CR program (

Human-prosthesis cooperation: combining adaptive prosthesis control with visual feedback guided gait.

BACKGROUND: Personalizing prosthesis control is often structured as human-in-the-loop optimization. However, gait performance is influenced by both human control and intelligent prosthesis control. Hence, we need to consider both human and prosthesis control, and their cooperation, to achieve desired gait patterns. In this study, we developed a novel paradigm that engages human gait control via user-fed visual feedback (FB) of stance time to cooperate with automatic prosthesis control tuning. Three initial questions were studied: (1) does user control of gait timing (via visual FB) help the pr

Comparison of Methods for the Estimation of the Maximum Oxygen Uptake of Men Drug Addicts.

Background: Maximum oxygen uptake (VO2max) is an important respiratory physiological index of the aerobic endurance of the body, especially for special groups such as drug addicts, and it is an important indicator for assessing the cardiopulmonary function and formulating exercise prescriptions. Although the cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPX) is a classic method to directly measure VO2max, this method is limited by factors such as cumbersome operating procedures and expensive equipment, resulting in its relatively low applicability. Recently, many studies have begun to focus on the estimation

Effects of a Home-Based Resistance Training Program on Recovery From Total Hip Replacement Surgery: Feasibility and Pilot Testing.

BACKGROUND: Postoperative exercise rehabilitation helps patients recover normal joint functions after total hip arthroplasty (total hip replacement surgery or THR) by strengthening the muscles that surround the replaced hip joint. However, the high cost of professionally supervised exercise rehabilitation programs limits access to program participation and, thus, to optimal recovery of normal joint functions. Therefore, the development of an effective home-based, self-monitored exercise rehabilitation program is critical to promote the optimal recovery of THR patients. PURPOSE: This study tes

Genetic Evidence for Causal Effects of Domain-Specific Physical Activity and Sedentary Behavior on Osteoporosis and Inflammatory Arthritis: A Bidirectional Mendelian Randomization Study.

OBJECTIVE: Genetic factors contribute to physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior (SB), two complex behavioral traits. They may be associated with musculoskeletal and inflammatory diseases. However, the relationships of domain-specific PA and SB traits with osteoporosis (OS), psoriatic arthritis (PsA), and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) remain unclear. A two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis assessed potential bidirectional associations between these behavioral traits and the three diseases. METHODS: GWAS summary statistics were used to examine five domain-specific PA traits, three
