During this study we explored the gait attributes commonly used in subjective locomotion scoring systems and use new technology to evaluate these gait attributes objectively on 60 Holstein lactating dairy cattle. Kinematic gait analysis more commonly used in sports and equine science was adapted for use on dairy cattle to assess stride characteristics, joint flexion, and spine posture in dairy cows with different lameness status. Cows that were lame had shorter stride length and had negative tracking distance compared with nonlame cattle. Lame cattle did not show any difference in spine postur

BACKGROUND: Symptomatic lumbar spinal stenosis produces gradually progressive back and leg pain with standing and walking, relieved by sitting or lying. One of the uncommon symptoms is involuntary intermittent penile erection due to spinal canal stenosis. This symptom is very rare and often forgotten when history is taken.
METHODS: In this case report, a patient suffering from intermittent priapism due to degenerative spinal canal stenosis and spondylolisthesis is described. On admission his symptoms were intermittent neurogenic claudication and involuntary erection provoked by walking a shor

Patients with mitochondrial myopathies (MM) usually suffer from exercise intolerance due to their impaired oxidative capacity and physical deconditioning. We evaluated the effects of a 12-week supervised randomized rehabilitation program involving endurance training in patients with MM. Twenty MM patients were assigned to a training or control group. For three nonconsecutive days each week, patients combined cycle exercise at 70% of their peak work rate with three upper-body weight-lifting exercises performed at 50% of maximum capacity. Training increased maximal oxygen uptake (28.5%), work ou

The aims of this study were to determine the influence of external tibial torsion on the effectiveness of the ankle-foot orthoses (AFO) in children with lumbosacral myelomeningocele. Forty patients with normal tibial rotation and 18 patients with excessive external tibial torsion were evaluated with three-dimensional gait analysis at their comfortable walking speed. The group with normal tibial rotation showed significantly greater knee extension and lower mean extension moment compared with the group with external tibial torsion (p < 0.05). The posteriorly and laterally deviated ground-reacti

In a prospective, randomised trial of 81 patients with fractures of the ankle of AO types A, B and C we compared two regimes of postoperative management after internal fixation. The patients were mobilised either non-weight-bearing with crutches or weight-bearing in a below-knee walking plaster. We found a temporary benefit in subjective evaluation only (65 v 50 points, Mann-Whitney test, cft, p=0.02) for those with a below-knee walking plaster. There were no significant differences between the groups in the loaded dorsal range of movement (25 degrees v 23 degrees, Mann-Whitney test, cft, p =

We implanted 300 uncoated cementless PM prostheses into 271 patients and followed 251 (92.6%) of them for four to seven years. By then 37 had already been revised for aseptic and three for septic loosening. The survival rate with implant failure as the endpoint was 88.8% for the cup and 85.3% for the stem after six years. There was a higher risk of implant loosening in congenital dysplasia, unilateral hip arthroplasty and obesity. The results of 225 unrevised hip replacements were assessed by questionnaire. Only 27.4% of the patients were completely free from pain and 17.9% had pain on walking

A case of a 69-year male patient is reported. His history is an illustration of difficulties in the diagnosis of hip joint tbc. Patient suffered from severe pain in the right hip and thigh while walking for 25 years. Despite abnormal bone structure confirmed by several X-rays, no other examinations were ever performed to establish possible diagnosis. The patient was told to have "an inflammation" or "degeneration" of the bone. Anti-inflammatory and analgesic agents were given him to enable walking for years. Untreated tuberculosis resulted in the complete destruction of the proximal end of thi

Prosthetic feet having new keel configurations were specially designed to store deformation energy during early and midstance and release it at push-off. These prosthetic components display longitudinal symmetry favoring good energy storage/release capability in the sagittal plane. The need for inverters/everters either as independent components or within the foot structure has long been recognized. This article documents the walking and slow jogging performances of six young adults wearing below-knee prostheses fitted with the Space Foot, a flexible foot prosthesis that provides medio-lateral

Although tooth bleaching has been known to the dental profession for over 100 years, new knowledge is continually surfacing. This review discusses the 1990 to 1991 literature on two nonvital bleaching techniques (thermocatalytic and walking) and three classes of vital bleaching techniques (in-office; dentist-prescribed, home-applied; and over-the-counter kits). The choice for nonvital bleaching is the walking bleach technique, with the use of sodium perborate alone having less potential for cervical resorption. The choices for vital bleaching techniques are either the dentist-prescribed, home-

Biomechanical analysis of the work and power patterns involved in gait provides insight into the nature of gait deficits and suggests methods for improvement. The purpose of this study was to describe the work and power characteristics during gait for both limbs of hemiplegic patients, and to determine the work and power variables related to self-selected speeds of walking. The gait of 30 ambulatory adults between the ages of 47 and 79 years was studied using two-dimensional cinematography and force-plate data in a link-segment model. About 40% of the positive work required for walking was per

Behavioral abnormalities and psychiatric symptoms were assessed in 178 patients diagnosed as having Alzheimer's disease by NINCDS/ADRDA criteria. The subjects were selected from a defined catchment area and therefore were representative of a group of patients with Alzheimer's disease of varying severity. Auditory hallucinations were found in 10%, visual hallucinations in 13%, and delusions in 16%. Symptoms suggestive of depression were reported by 39% of the patients and features of depression observed in 25%. Twenty percent were aggressive, and 7% were sexually disinhibited. Nineteen percent

A relationship between dynamic flexion-extension motion ranges during walking and the magnitude of flexion and extension moments was analyzed for 38 ambulatory children with spastic cerebral palsy. Moments tending to flex the hip and the knee were more than a factor of two times greater than those occurring during normal gait. At the knee, the magnitude of the moments was related to the amount of flexion deformity, whereas at the hip there was no correlation between moment magnitude and extension motion range. The maximum dorsiflexion and plantarflexion ankle moments were of less than normal v

The effect of sensory input on the performance of a geographical orientation task of children at two different ages (kindergartners and fourth graders) and adults was determined. I investigated the ability of subjects to point accurately to the starting position after experiencing identical routes under three sensory conditions. In Condition 1, subjects were led walking through routes and could see the walls and ceiling of the test room (visual, somatosensory, and vestibular information). In Condition 2, subjects were led walking with vision occluded (somatosensory and vestibular information).

An outbreak of bluetongue and the first isolation of the virus in the Sudan are reported. The disease occurred in sheep stressed by walking for five days when biting arthropods were prevalent. Estimates of the morbidity and mortality rates ranged from about 30 per cent and 2 per cent respectively in adult sheep to around 80 per cent and 100 per cent respectively in lambs. The virus was isolated by the inoculation of suckling mice and embryonated eggs with whole blood from febrile sheep. In a gel precipitation test it reacted with specific antiserum to type 10 BT8 strain. No other agent was iso

INTRODUCTION: The built environment supports physical activity (PA) by providing opportunities to be active in daily life. Natural experiments are valuable for assessing how real-world changes to the built environment affect PA and are critical for guiding policies to improve population-level PA. The objective of this review was to summarize the evidence from natural experiments that investigated the impacts of built environment changes on PA in Canada.
METHODS: Searches were conducted in MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, ProQuest Public Health and SportDISCUS, from inception to 27 November 2024. Na

Accurate predictive models of human energy expenditure are essential for both individual health monitoring and optimizing performance in physically demanding environments. Estimating energy costs and traversal time in complex terrain is crucial for preventing overexertion-related injuries and guiding individuals through strenuous tasks. Beyond personal applications, these models play a critical role in search and rescue operations, where efficient resource allocation can determine mission success. However, these scenarios present challenges such as diverse terrain conditions, equipment constra

BACKGROUND: Wearable robotic exoskeletons and leg braces are desirable for gait rehabilitation because they can apply loads directly to an affected joint. Yet, they are not widely used in clinics because they are costly and complex to set up. Conversely, tethered devices, such as elastic resistance bands, are widely available in clinics, are low-cost, and are quick to set up. However, resistance bands will affect walking differently based on how they are configured to pull on the leg (e.g., pulling forward or backward).
RESEARCH QUESTION: How can a resistance band be configured to alter muscl

A rapidly growing body of experimental evidence in the literature shows that the effects of humans interacting with vibrating structures, other humans, and their surrounding environment can be critical for reliable estimation of structural vibrations. The Interaction-based Vibration Serviceability Assessment framework (I-VSA) was proposed by the authors in 2017 to address this, taking into account human-structure dynamic interactions (HSI) to simulate the structural vibrations experienced by each occupant/pedestrian. The I-VSA method, however, had limited provisions to simulate simultaneously

The objective of this study was to assess the applicability of a computer vision-based keypoint detection technique to extract mobility variables associated with mobility scores from top-view 2-dimensional (2D) videos of dairy cows. In addition, the study determined the potential of a machine learning classification model to predict mobility scores based on the newly extracted mobility variables. A dataset of 256 video clips of individual cows was collected, with each clip recorded from a top-view perspective while the cows were walking. The cows were visually assessed using a 4-level mobility

Ground reaction force (GRF) is essential for estimating muscle strength and joint torque in inverse dynamic analysis. Typically, it is measured using a force plate. However, force plates have spatial limitations, and studies of gaits involve numerous steps and thus require a large number of force plates, which is disadvantageous. To overcome these challenges, we developed a deep learning model for estimating three-axis GRF utilizing shoes with three uniaxial load cells. GRF data were collected from 81 people as they walked on two force plates while wearing shoes with three load cells. The thre
