An Easily Synthesized Fluorescent Probe with Nanomolar Sensitive for Detection of Hg2+ via a Reaction-Based Mechanism and Its Application in Tap Water, Fish, Shrimp, Soil Samples, and Living Cells.

Mercury ion (Hg2+) is a ubiquitous heavy metal pollutant that poses health risks through its environmental transport and accumulation in living organisms. To address this, we designed and constructed a chemically reactive probe, BTS, capable of sensitively and selectively detecting Hg2+. The probe displayed excellent analytical performance, including high selectivity, a fast response time (120 s), and a low detection limit (3.9 nM). Mechanistic studies, utilizing 1H NMR titration, HPLC, and HRMS, confirmed that, upon Hg2+ binding, the dithiane group of the probe is specifically transformed int

Size-dependent impacts from polystyrene micro- and nanoplastics on freshwater invertebrates: A mesocosm study combining environmental DNA metabarcoding and morphological identification.

Micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) are widespread in freshwater ecosystems worldwide. While numerous studies have demonstrated that exposure to MNPs may induce adverse effects at the level of individual organisms, their potential long-term impacts at the level of communities remain poorly understood. The current study comprised a 14-week outdoor mesocosm experiment in which naturally established communities of freshwater invertebrates were exposed to spherical europium-doped polystyrene (PS) particles (15 µm and 150 nm) at concentrations resembling the higher end of those reported for natural surf

A loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay for the rapid and quantitative tracking of fecal contamination sources in water.

Fecal contamination in water poses a serious threat to public health and the ecological environment. Numerous qPCR-based methods have been used to identify the source of fecal contamination, but this method relies on expensive equipment, well-established laboratory conditions, and experienced personnel, significantly reducing the timeliness of identifying contamination sources. Here, we developed a loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) assay for tracking the sources of fecal contamination to rapid identifying and quantifying humans, ruminants, pigs, and poultry fecal contamination. Immunofluorescence Rapid Analysis of Bisphenol A in Water Based on Magnetic Particles and Quantum Dots.

Bisphenol A (BPA) is widely used as a hardener in plastics production and its release and circulation in ecosystems lead to negatively impacts the human endocrine system. Therefore, there is a need for simple and efficient BPA monitoring tools. This paper presents a combination of two approaches for this purpose: the use of magnetic particles (MPs) as antibody carriers and immunochromatographic test strips based on quantum dots (QDs) for recording labeled immune complexes. Initially, free antigen binds to the MP-specific antibody conjugate, concentrating the sample to a final volume of 200 µL.

Preparation of polyethylene grafted cellulose for the removal of diethyl phthalate from wastewater.

A novel polyethylene glycol (PEG)-functionalized cellulose adsorbent (PEG-Cell) derived from sawdust was developed for the efficient removal of diethyl phthalate (DEP) from wastewater. The synthesis involved sequential acid (0.1 M HCl) and alkaline (0.1 M NaOH) hydrolysis of sawdust, followed by sodium chlorate bleaching and PEG grafting to introduce hydrophilic glycol groups onto the cellulose matrix. The PEG-Cell adsorbent demonstrated exceptional DEP removal performance at optimized conditions: initial DEP concentration (100 mg/L), adsorbent dose (0.6 g/L), contact time (60 min), and pH (7)

Tracking antibiotics and antibiotic-resistant E. coli in the aquatic environment linked to agriculture.

The application of manure to fertilize agricultural land is associated with the introduction of antibiotic residues and bacteria, including antibiotic-resistant bacteria, which can reach surface water through runoff and drainage and groundwater through leaching from the soil. This was investigated by sampling 50 surface water locations (before and after fertilization) and 50 groundwater wells for the presence of antibiotic residues and the presence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria. For the latter, Escherichia coli and extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL) producing E. coli were used as indicato

Free radical switching behavior between initial neutral and buffer neutral condition during Fenton-like degradation over pyrite/hematite mineral.

Heterogeneous Fenton-like reactions have broadened the pH adaptation window of traditional homogeneous Fenton during water purification. However, the sharp decrease in their activity under macro-neutral conditions is still a large challenge. More importantly, although it has been realized that the pH value always changes during the heterogeneous Fenton-like process, there are still a few research focuses on the degradation mechanisms in different pH systems, especially the difference between initial neutral and the buffered neutral system. This study reports a pyrite/hematite (FeS2/Fe2O3) nano

Regulating nonradicals generation through peroxymonosulfate activation via localized dipole to enhance wastewater biodegradability.

It is still greatly desirable to activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) forming nonradicals for the removal of electron-rich contaminants in complex water matrices. However, achieving this on heterogeneous metal-based catalysts with uniform electron distribution remains challenging due to the asymmetric structure of PMS molecules (H-O-O-SO3-). Here, inspired by the dipole effect, we design a Co-doped ZnO catalyst (ZOC) to break charge symmetry at active sites and enhance nonradicals generation. The high charge density at Co sites facilitates two-electron transfer, promoting O-O and O-H bond cleavage

Comprehensive assessment of 45 antibiotics in ten urban wastewater treatment plants in Northeastern China: Terminal treatment is not a reliable guard.

The increasing presence of antibiotics in urban wastewater has raised significant concerns. Therefore, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) face questions about their ability to reliably and effectively remove antibiotics. In this study, data from ten representative WWTPs were systematically evaluated to assess antibiotic occurrence, removal efficiencies, seasonal variations, and ecological risks, revealing the prevalent instability in antibiotic removal capacities of traditional WWTPs. The results showed that the total influent concentrations ranged from 9351.63 to 50126.08 ng/L, with the prim
