The disaggregation of the Oswestry Disability Index in patients undergoing lumbar surgery for degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: The Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), is a widely used patient-reported outcome measure (PROM) for assessing functional status in individuals with lumbar spine pathology. The ODI is used by surgeons to determine the initial status and monitor progress after surgery. Compiled ODI data enables comparisons between different surgical techniques. Degenerative lumbar spondylolisthesis (DLS) often causes symptoms such as back pain and neurogenic claudication affecting quality of life and activities of daily living captured by the ODI. Despite extensive studies on ODI changes after

An intergenerational service-learning approach to improve hand function in older adults.

Homebound older adults are at greater risk for functional impairments, social isolation, and loss of independence. Adequate hand function is needed to perform many daily activities, yet is understudied, particularly in the homebound population. The purpose of this study was to pilot test an intergenerational program in which pre-health college students were trained to deliver hand exercises to homebound older adults receiving Meals on Wheels (MOW) services. Eight MOW clients (mean age: 80.1 ± 12.9y) and 17 students completed the program. Students visited clients 2×/week for 6 weeks and engaged

Quality of life following non-dysvascular lower limb amputation is contextualized through occupations: a qualitative study.

PURPOSE: To understand how persons with non-dysvascular lower limb amputation (LLA) use occupations to contextualize their quality of life (QoL). METHODS: A qualitative study using an interpretative description approach was conducted. Analysis of the interviews was guided by an occupational perspective, which considers the day-to-day activities that are important to an individual. RESULTS: Twenty adults with an adult-acquired non-dysvascular amputation (e.g., trauma, cancer or infection) were interviewed. Following thematic analysis, two main themes were developed: (1) sense of self expresse

Safety and feasibility of transcutaneous vagus nerve stimulation in mild cognitive impairment: VINCI-AD study protocol.

BACKGROUND: Over 55 million adults are living with dementia globally, which is projected to reach 157 million by 2050. Mild cognitive impairment (MCI), a syndrome of memory impairment with intact activities of daily living, may precede dementia by several years. Around 5-15% of individuals with MCI convert to dementia annually. Novel treatments which delay progression of MCI to dementia are urgently needed. Transcutaneous vagal nerve stimulation (tVNS) is a non-invasive neuromodulation technique that targets the vagus nerve. Importantly, tVNS has been shown to improve cognition in healthy volu

Relationship Between Appetite-Related Peptides and Frailty in Older Adults.

BACKGROUND: Frailty, is a geriatric syndrome that reduces the resistance to stress situations caused by activities of daily living and increases morbidity and mortality. We hypothesized that a decrease in orexigenic peptides or an increase in anorexigenic peptides might be associated with frailty. We aimed to investigate the relationship between frailty and six appetite-related peptides: ghrelin, neuropeptide Y (NPY), agouti-related peptide (AgRP), cocaine-amphetamine-associated peptide (CART), peptide YY, and alpha MSH (α-MSH). METHODS: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 85 older ad

Geographic atrophy: Mechanism of disease, pathophysiology, and role of the complement system.

Geographic atrophy (GA) is an advanced form of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), characterized by atrophic lesions that first start in the outer retina and progressively expand to cover the macula and the fovea, the center of the macula, leading to irreversible loss of vision over time. GA is distinct from wet or neovascular AMD (nAMD), the other form of advanced AMD. Neovascular AMD is characterized by new invading leaky blood vessels in the macula that can lead to acute vision loss. GA and nAMD may coexist in the same eye. The underlying pathophysiology of GA is complex and thought to
