Systematic review on the DNA methylation role in endometriosis: current evidence and perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Endometriosis appears to have a multilayered etiology, with genetic and epigenetic factors each contributing half of the pathogenesis. The molecular processes that underlie the onset of endometriosis are yet unclear, but it is assumed that an important contributor in the etiopathology of the disease is DNA methylation. METHODS: We conducted a systematic review of the literature regarding DNA methylation in endometriosis following PRISMA guidelines. Records were obtained from PubMed and Web of Science on May 31, 2024. Original research articles analyzing regional or genome-wide DNA

A personalized aortic valve replacement using computed tomography-guided aortic valve neocuspidization. Analysis of mid-term results compared to standard Ozaki technique.

BACKGROUND: The original Ozaki technique involves sizing the neovalve cusps during cross-clamp. It leads to prolonging the ischemic time compared to standard surgical AVR. Measurements taken on the collapsed Aortic Root (AR) may also be inaccurate. We use preoperative Computed Tomography (CT) to perform more accurate sizing in physiological conditions and shorten the ischemic time. This study analyzes the results of the CT-guided Aortic Valve Neocuspidization (AVNeo) compared with the Ozaki technique. METHODS: The validity of the concept was evaluated ex vivo. Experimental valves underwent ge

Multiscale interstitial fluid computation modeling of cortical bone to characterize the hydromechanical stimulation of lacunar-canalicular network.

Bone tissue is a biological composite material with a complex hierarchical structure that could continuously adjust its internal structure to adapt to the alterations in the external load environment. The fluid flow within bone is the main route of osteocyte metabolism, and the pore pressure as well as the fluid shear stress generated by it are important mechanical stimuli perceived by osteocytes. Owing to the irregular multiscale structure of bone tissue, the fluid stimulation that lacunar-canalicular network (LCN) in different regions of the tissue underwent remained unclear. In this study,

Abomasal RNA-seq reveals a strong local cellular response in suckling lambs with resistance against Haemonchus contortus.

Santa Ines (SI) and Ile de France (IF) sheep are known to be resistant and susceptible to Haemonchus contortus infection, respectively. Several studies have shown some genes as potential biological markers for sheep resistance against gastrointestinal nematodes using molecular tools, including transcriptomic analysis. In this study, we sequenced the polyadenylated RNA of the abomasal tissue of SI and IF suckling lambs to identify mucosa-specific transcript alterations between breeds artificially infected with H. contortus. Naïve SI (n = 4) and IF (n = 4) lambs were artificially infected every

Holobiont Urbanism: sampling urban beehives reveals cities' metagenomes.

BACKGROUND: Over half of the world's population lives in urban areas with, according to the United Nations, nearly 70% expected to live in cities by 2050. Our cities are built by and for humans, but are also complex, adaptive biological systems involving a diversity of other living species. The majority of these species are invisible and constitute the city's microbiome. Our design decisions for the built environment shape these invisible populations, and as inhabitants we interact with them on a constant basis. A growing body of evidence shows us that human health and well-being are dependent

Detection of citrus diseases in complex backgrounds based on image-text multimodal fusion and knowledge assistance.

Diseases pose a significant threat to the citrus industry, and the accurate detection of these diseases represent key factors for their early diagnosis and precise control. Existing diagnostic methods primarily rely on image models trained on vast datasets and limited their applicability due to singular backgrounds. To devise a more accurate, robust, and versatile model for citrus disease classification, this study focused on data diversity, knowledge assistance, and modal fusion. Leaves from healthy plants and plants infected with 10 prevalent diseases (citrus greening, citrus canker, anthrac

Characterisation of macrophage infiltration and polarisation based on integrated transcriptomic and histological analyses in Primary Sjögren's syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is a progressive inflammatory autoimmune disease. Immune cell infiltration into glandular lobules and ducts and glandular destruction are the pathophysiological hallmarks of pSS. Macrophages are one of the most important cells involved in the induction and regulation of an inflammatory microenvironment. Although studies have reported that an abnormal tissue microenvironment alters the metabolic reprogramming and polarisation status of macrophages, the mechanisms driving macrophage infiltration and polarisation in pSS remain unclear. METHODS: Immune

Both network architecture and micro cracks effects on lacuno-canalicular liquid flow efficiency within the context of multiphysics approach for bone remodeling.

When physical forces are applied to bone, its mechanical adaptive behaviors change according to the microarchitecture configuration. This leads to changes in biological and physical thresholds in the remodeling cell population, involving sensor cells (osteocytes) interacting with each other and changes in osteocyte shape due to variation in lacunar shape. The resulting alterations in fluid flow leads to changes in the membrane electrical potential and shear stress. Eventual creation of microcracks, may lead in turn to modify cell activity. In contrast, the redundancy in the lacuno canalicular

Citrulline in the management of patients with urea cycle disorders.

BACKGROUND: Treatment recommendations for urea cycle disorders (UCDs) include supplementation with amino acids involved in the urea cycle (arginine and/or citrulline, depending on the enzyme deficiency), to maximize ammonia excretion through the urea cycle, but limited data are available regarding the use of citrulline. This study retrospectively reviewed clinical and biological data from patients with UCDs treated with citrulline and/or arginine at a reference center since 1990. The aim was to describe the prescription, impact, and safety of these therapies. Data collection included patient b

Mutation in the Two-Component System Regulator YycH Leads to Daptomycin Tolerance in Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus aureus upon Evolution with a Population Bottleneck.

Adaptive laboratory evolution (ALE) is a useful tool to study the evolution of antibiotic tolerance in bacterial populations under diverse environmental conditions. The role of population bottlenecks in the evolution of tolerance has been investigated in Escherichia coli, but not in a more clinically relevant pathogen, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In this study, we used ALE to evolve MRSA under repetitive daptomycin treatment and incorporated population bottlenecks following antibiotic exposure. We observed that the populations finally attained a tolerance mutation in th

Predicting the prognosis in patients with sepsis by a pyroptosis-related gene signature.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis remains a life-threatening disease with a high mortality rate that causes millions of deaths worldwide every year. Many studies have suggested that pyroptosis plays an important role in the development and progression of sepsis. However, the potential prognostic and diagnostic value of pyroptosis-related genes in sepsis remains unknown. METHODS: The GSE65682 and GSE95233 datasets were obtained from Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO) database and pyroptosis-related genes were obtained from previous literature and Molecular Signature Database. Multiplexed Strain Phenotyping Defines Consequences of Genetic Diversity in Mycobacterium tuberculosis for Infection and Vaccination Outcomes.

There is growing evidence that genetic diversity in Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis, contributes to the outcomes of infection and public health interventions, such as vaccination. Epidemiological studies suggest that among the phylogeographic lineages of M. tuberculosis, strains belonging to a sublineage of Lineage 2 (mL2) are associated with concerning clinical features, including hypervirulence, treatment failure, and vaccine escape. The global expansion and increasing prevalence of this sublineage has been attributed to the selective advantage conferred by th

Bringing machine learning to research on intellectual and developmental disabilities: taking inspiration from neurological diseases.

Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDDs), such as Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, Rett syndrome, and autism spectrum disorder, usually manifest at birth or early childhood. IDDs are characterized by significant impairment in intellectual and adaptive functioning, and both genetic and environmental factors underpin IDD biology. Molecular and genetic stratification of IDDs remain challenging mainly due to overlapping factors and comorbidity. Advances in high throughput sequencing, imaging, and tools to record behavioral data at scale have greatly enhanced our understanding of the mo

Causes of Death Among Patients With Initially Inoperable Pancreas Cancer After Induction Chemotherapy and Ablative 5-fraction Stereotactic Magnetic Resonance Image Guided Adaptive Radiation Therapy.

PURPOSE: Nearly all patients with pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) eventually die of progressive cancer after exhausting treatment options. Although distant metastases (DMs) are a common cause of death, autopsy studies have shown that locoregional progression may be directly responsible for up to one-third of PDAC-related deaths. Ablative stereotactic magnetic resonance-guided adaptive radiation therapy (A-SMART) is a novel treatment strategy that appears to improve locoregional control compared with nonablative radiation therapy, potentially leading to improved overall survival. [Specialized vitamin-mineral supplements for persons in extreme conditions].

Monitoring the actual nutrition of various groups of the population of the Russian Federation indicates the presence of pronounced deficiencies of essential micronutrients, and above all vitamins and biologically active compounds. Deficiency of many micronutrients is a risk factor for the development of a number of conditions (anxiety, depression, etc.) and non-communicable diseases (cardiovascular, cognitive and neuromuscular disorders). It reduces the effectiveness of the treatment of injuries and wounds, and also leads to a negative effect on the antioxidant protection of the body and a mor

Identifying autism symptom severity trajectories across childhood.

An individual's autism symptom severity level can change across childhood. The prevalence and direction of change, however, are still not well understood. Nor are the characteristics of children that experience change. Symptom severity trajectories were evaluated from early to middle childhood (approximately ages 3-11) for 182 autistic children. Symptom severity change was evaluated using individual change scores and the Reliable Change Index. Fifty-one percent of participants experienced symptom severity change: 27% of children decreased in severity, 24% increased and 49% were stable. Symptom
