[Meige syndrome with dyspnea as main manifestation: a report of one case and literature review].

Meige syndrome is a focal dystonic movement disorder characterized by blepharospasm and oromandibular dystonia. It is a very rare disease. Individuals affected by Meige syndrome usually experience a wide array of complex symptoms including involuntary blinking and spasms of the jaw muscle. Dyspnea is rarely mentioned, due to dystonic spasm affecting the respiratory muscles. We report a case of a 69-year-old man with Meige syndrome, with dyspnea as the main clinical manifestation. Management often involves medications, botulinum toxin injections, and surgery to alleviate symptoms and enhance fu

Pelvic lipomatosis-a rare diagnosis and a challenging management: a case report and literature review.

Pelvic lipomatosis (PL) involves nonmalignant excess fat growth in perirectal and perivesical areas, gaining recognition over three decades. This review addresses its clinicopathological aspects amid controversies, emphasizing the need for a comprehensive examination of current literature. This report outlines a 42-year-old man's diagnostic journey for persistent urological symptoms, ultimately identified as PL. PL, if untreated, adversely impacts the urinary system, affecting kidney function and causing systemic complications. Management involves accurate diagnosis through radiological method

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis - the incomplete puzzle.

Granulomatous with polyangiitis (GPA) is a necrotizing granulomatous vasculitis that mostly affects small-sized vessels. The disease can affect many organs, although renal and respiratory tract involvement are the most frequent and distinguishing features. Musculoskeletal manifestations have been reported in about 50% of patients and can occur as myalgia, oligoarthralgia/arthritis of large joints or polyarthralgia/arthritis of small joints. Infrequently musculoskeletal symptoms can be the first disease manifestation, and in this clinical scenario GPA diagnosis might be delayed or mistaken by o

Post-transplant Lymphoproliferative Disease (PTLD) of The Larynx in an Adult With Kidney Transplant; A Case Report.

Post-transplant lymphoproliferative disease (PTLD) is a clinicopathologic entity characterized by an abnormal lymphocytic proliferation that occurs in immunosuppressed patients following organ transplantation. Several sites in the head and neck may be affected by PTLD with rare involvement of the larynx. Affected patients often present with symptoms and signs suggestive of a malignant lesion. Early diagnosis using histopathologic examination is paramount to prevent life-threatening airway compromise. The authors of this manuscript report a 52-year-old women, diagnosed case of renal failure for

[Involvement of mucous membranes in papulosquamous diseases].

Many skin diseases may affect the oral and genital mucous membranes but involvement is generally uncommon. Mucous membranes are most often affected by lichen planus and less frequently by psoriasis or lupus erythematosus. Macroscopic changes may vary from increased vulnerability, erythema and erosions to leukoplakia. Subjective symptoms of burning sensations or localized pain must be distinguished from underlying psychiatric disorders. Furthermore, neoplasia may complicate chronic lichen planus. Therefore, depending on the location and extent of mucous membrane symptoms, both local and systemi

A rare association of myasthenia gravis and mitochondrial myopathy: a clinical, biochemical and morphologic study of one case.

Myasthenia gravis and mitochondrial myopathy may present with similar clinical symptoms as inconstant palpebral ptosis, ophthalmoparesis, and muscle weakness. A few case initially diagnosed as myasthenia gravis by a positive decremental response on EMG and successful anticholinesterase therapy revealed to be affected by mitochondrial disease. We report a new case initially found to be affected by myasthenia gravis in whom muscle biopsy, performed because of symptom worsening, disclosed a mitochondrial myopathy. It is not clear if the association of mitochondrial myopathy and myasthenia gravis

A deep explainable artificial intelligent framework for neurological disorders discrimination.

Pathological hand tremor (PHT) is a common symptom of Parkinson's disease (PD) and essential tremor (ET), which affects manual targeting, motor coordination, and movement kinetics. Effective treatment and management of the symptoms relies on the correct and in-time diagnosis of the affected individuals, where the characteristics of PHT serve as an imperative metric for this purpose. Due to the overlapping features of the corresponding symptoms, however, a high level of expertise and specialized diagnostic methodologies are required to correctly distinguish PD from ET. In this work, we propose

M74 syndrome in Baltic salmon and the possible role of oxidative stresses in its development: present knowledge and perspectives for future studies.

Baltic salmon suffer from maternally transmitted yolk-sac fry mortality syndrome--M74. The incidence of M74 varies considerably on a year to year basis. In the 1990s the mortalities were 50-80% but in 2003-2005, below 10%. Before death, M74-affected fry have several typical symptoms. M74-eggs are characterized by low thiamine and carotenoid content, and affected fry show signs of oxidative stress. Although M74 is associated with thiamine deficiency and the symptoms of the fry can be alleviated with thiamine, the underlying causes of the syndrome have remained a mystery. We have studied the sym

Postpartum maternal sleep disruption is associated with perception of infant temperament: findings from a 6-month longitudinal study.

PURPOSE: Infant temperament is influenced by environmental factors, such as maternal depression and anxiety. However, the association between maternal sleep and infant temperament is unclear. We examined the associations between maternal postpartum sleep and maternal perception of infant temperament and the moderating effect of maternal depression and anxiety over 6 months following delivery. METHODS: Postpartum women with a history of depression (N = 166) completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, Edinburgh Postnatal Depression scale, Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale-7, and Infant Behav

Prostate Cancer in Primary Care.

Prostate cancer is a common malignancy seen worldwide. The incidence has risen in recent decades, mainly fuelled by more widespread use of prostate-specific antigen (PSA) testing, although prostate cancer mortality rates have remained relatively static over that time period. A man's risk of prostate cancer is affected by his age and family history of the disease. Men with prostate cancer generally present symptomatically in primary care settings, although some diagnoses are made in asymptomatic men undergoing opportunistic PSA screening. Symptoms traditionally thought to correlate with prostat

Abnormal gray matter structural covariance networks associated with suicidal ideation in adults with major depressive disorder: Evidence from the REST-meta-MDD consortium.

BACKGROUND: Suicidal ideation (SI) is common in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and may represent a clinically meaningful phenotype within MDD rather than merely a marker of more severe depressive symptoms. SI may involve disturbances in affective regulation, cognitive control, reward valuation, self-referential processing, and pain/social-threat processing. Although MDD with SI has been linked to gray matter abnormalities in anterior cingulate, prefrontal, limbic, and cerebellar regions, it remains unclear whether these abnormalities show SI-related morphometric covariance patte

Possible Consequences of Cannabis Legalization - What Do Research Show?

BACKGROUND: Indian hemp (lat. Cannabis sativa subs. Indica) has been used as a source of industrial fiber, seed oil, food, medicine for some somatic diseases, and it is also used as a psychoactive substance. Cannabis can be used by smoking, evaporation, as a food ingredient, or as an extract. Acute and chronic cannabis use has been shown to be detrimental to several aspects of psychological and physical health and many experimental studies done on healthy people indicate the potential of Δ9- tetra hydro cannabinoid (THC) in inducing transient, dose-dependent psychotic symptoms, but also affect

[Postictal psychoses: Clinical and neurobiological findings].

Psychosis in epilepsy can be categorized in relation to seizures in two main categories: interictal psychosis and postictal psychosis. Postictal psychosis (PIP) is a specific syndrome in relation to seizure activity: a clear temporal relation exists between the psychotic state of sudden onset and a precipitating bout of complex partial or generalized seizures. However, this very specific syndrome is not included as such within the DSM-5, and PIP belongs to the category "Psychotic disorder due to another medical condition". Diagnostic criteria are: (1) episode of psychosis within 1 week after a

First-rank symptoms and premorbid adjustment in young individuals at increased risk of developing psychosis.

BACKGROUND: Individuals at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis represent a heterogeneous group with a high rate of comorbid psychiatric disorders. There is little information on whether certain qualitative aspects of psychotic symptoms among CHR individuals may be predictive of future psychosis. This study focused on describing the prevalence of first-rank symptoms (FRS) among a sample of CHR individuals and its association with future transition to psychosis and, from a neurodevelopmental perspective, the level of adjustment of individuals at CHR during their childhood was also analysed.

Impulsivity in anxiety disorder patients: is it related to comorbid cyclothymia?

OBJECTIVE: The relationship between anxiety and impulsivity is controversial and not well explored. In a previous study we compared impulsivity, measured by different rating tools, in patients with anxiety disorders vs. healthy controls. In the same sample we now explore the influence of comorbid soft bipolar spectrum disorders on the relationship between anxiety disorders and impulsivity. METHOD: A sample including 47 subjects with anxiety disorder(s) and 45 control subjects matched for demographic, educational and work characteristics underwent a diagnostic evaluation by the Mini Neuropsych

Smoking in patients with psychiatric disorders: Effects on their psychopathology and quality of life.

We are living in an era of implementing complete smoking cessation in all closed areas, following the example of the USA and other countries in the European Union. We appear more tolerant in our mentally ill in-patients, especially the ones suffering from long-term schizophrenia, where smoking is accepted and even encouraged. We tried to investigate the effect of smoking in these patients. We performed an in depth literature research of medical databases and web search engines containing relevant articles, opinions and arguments. It has been shown from a lot of different studies that the propo

Treatment of affective illness in the elderly with drugs and electroconvulsive therapy.

Affective illness is common, frequently debilitating, and sometimes life-threatening in the elderly. Considerations pertaining to treatment with heterocyclic drugs, MAOIs, lithium, psychostimulants and thyroid hormone, as well as ECT, have been reviewed. Amitriptyline and imipramine cause significant orthostatic hypotension and probably should be avoided in the elderly. In addition, amitriptyline is extremely anticholinergic. Amoxapine is essentially a neuroleptic sequelae, including tardive dyskinesia. If a patient has had a prior positive response or has a relative who had a good outcome fro
