[Features of lipid metabolism impairment in chronic alcoholic intoxication].

Long-term administration of ethanol into animals within 1-6 months resulted in distinct alterations of blood serum fatty acid composition as well as in elevation of the saturation rate simultaneously with a decrease of fatty acid polyunsaturation. Calculated coefficients, which included ratios between fatty acid with various rates of unsaturation, were highly informative. Alterations of fatty acid composition in blood serum, registered during observations, reflected the state of fatty acid metabolism in tissues. Analysis of fatty acid spectrum in blood serum enabled to evaluate the severity of

[Controlled study of the effect of silymarin on alcoholic liver disease].

A controlled trial on the use of Silymarin in patients with alcoholic liver disease was performed. Seventy two patients were admitted to the trial and randomly assigned to an experimental or controls group. Experimentals received 280 mg/day of Silymarin and controls an equal number of placebo tablets. Three patients on placebo and nine on Silymarin were lost from control (p = 0.035), remaining in control 34 patients receiving placebo and 25 patients receiving the drug. Both groups did not differ in their initial laboratory assessment and were followed up for an average of 15 months. Ten patien

Influence of endotoxin on experimental post-alcoholic liver injury.

The morphological and biochemical changes of the liver after endotoxin intake were analyzed in rats receiving 20% ethanol during 60 days. Besides morphological changes, concentration of serotonin and histamine in liver homogenates, the activity of asparagine and alanine aminotransferases (AspAT, ALAT), gamma-glutamyltranspeptidase (GGTP) and alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) in blood serum were determined, too. The most extensive morphologic changes of the liver were seen in group of animals intoxicated with 20% ethanol during 60 days and single dose of endotoxin E. coli 0127:B8 intraperitoneally. T

Social support and depression in men during alcoholism treatment.

Psychiatric comorbidities have been shown to be important predictors of the outcome of alcoholism treatment. This study examines whether perceived lack of social support can be identified as an independent predictor of symptoms of depression experienced during alcoholism treatment over and above the effects of personality characteristics and the severity of alcohol and psychiatric history. We studied 189 alcoholic men in treatment at a rural midwestern Department of Veterans Affairs medical center. Multiple regression analyses found that reduced social support significantly predicted depressio

Social support and outcome of alcoholism treatment: an exploratory analysis.

Social support is becoming recognized as a positive influence on health and health maintenance. Forms of support which bolster the patient's sense of personal efficacy should enhance the alcoholic's ability to cope with a specific stressor (i.e., overcoming his or her addiction). Patients reporting higher levels of social support during alcoholism treatment, especially support that enhances his or her self-esteem, should therefore demonstrate improved outcome compared to patients with lower levels. Sixty-one consecutive admissions to an inpatient alcoholism treatment program at a rural midwest

In-patient treatment of alcohol problems--predicting and preventing relapse.

Seventy-five alcohol-dependent patients (35 males, 40 females) treated by a Minnesota Model in-patient programme were followed up for 1 year. A variety of outcome measures were included, and patients' GPs were also questioned with regard to various aspects of their involvement in treatment for alcohol problems. Males admitted to the programme had a longer history of drinking, consumed more alcohol and showed greater expenditure on alcohol. At 6 months, 66% of males and 45% of females were abstinent; at 1 year, the proportions abstinent were 53% and 39%, respectively. Good outcome for both sexe

[Therapy and course of alcohol dependence. Effects on the patient and family].

100 male and female patients, aged 20 to 60 years with the diagnosis alcohol-addiction (ICD 9 No 303.0) took part in a longitudinal treatment evaluation study. Consecutive admissions from May '83 until July '85 were assessed. All patients participated in a 6-week inpatient group therapy and a 6-week outpatient treatment for alcohol-dependent patients at the Psychiatric University Hospital in Munich. Assessments were performed at the following times: 1. on admission, 2. at the end of inpatient therapy, 3. at the end of outpatient therapy, 4. at a 6-month follow-up and 5. at an 18-month follow-u

[Lipid peroxidation changes in the brain in fetal alcohol syndrome].

The study was performed upon three groups of 12-week-old male rats. The first group of rats received ethanol/9 g/kg/day as 6% aqueous solution/during pregnancy and lactation, the second group received ethanol only during lactation and the third group, controls, received equicaloric sucrose solution. The concentrations of LPO products were determined in the homogenates of tissue from frontal cortex, striatum, hypothalamus, hippocamp and cerebellum. The concentration of fluorescent products in the brain structures of rats treated perinatally with ethanol was several-fold increased as compared wi

Preventing fetal alcohol exposure: a cognitive behavioral approach.

Fetal alcohol exposure is a serious social and public health problem. However, most prevention programs in this area are solely informational. Important gaps in both understanding processes which underlie alcohol consumption during pregnancy and in the design of interventions to prevent fetal alcohol exposure are discussed. We argue that an important group missed by current interventions are women for whom abstinence is difficult, but who are not physically addicted. Cognitive behavioral interventions are proposed as appropriate for this target group. Recommendations for future directions in t

First effects of warning labels on alcoholic beverage containers.

Health warning labels are now required on alcoholic beverage containers in the United States. This study addresses who has seen these labels and respondents' reported changes in relevant knowledge, attitudes and behavior. Random samples of adults in the general population of the United States were interviewed by telephone 6 months prior to and 6 months after the enactment in November 1989 of the warning label law (N = 2006 and 2000, respectively). Six months after introduction of warning labels, over one fifth of the respondents reported having seen the labels. Greater proportions of key targe

An overview of cocaethylene, an alcohol-derived, psychoactive, cocaine metabolite.

Cocaethylene is a psychoactive ethyl homologue of cocaine, and is formed exclusively during the coadministration of cocaine and alcohol. Not a natural alkaloid of the coca leaf, cocaethylene can be identified in the urine, blood, hair, and neurological and liver tissue samples of individuals who have consumed both cocaine and alcohol. With a pharmacologic profile similar to cocaine, it can block the dopamine transporter on dopaminergic presynaptic nerve terminals in the brain. It increases dopamine synaptic content, provoking enhanced postsynaptic receptor stimulation, resulting in euphoria, r

Lipophilic amino alcohols with calcium channel blocking activity.

A series of novel lipophilic amino alcohols, analogs of the anticholinergic drug vesamicol, were evaluated for Ca2+ channel blocking activity. The effects of these drugs on depolarization-induced intracellular free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) transients were examined in single NG108-15 cells and dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons in culture. [Ca2+] was recorded with the Ca2+ indicator Indo-1 and a dual emission microfluorimeter. Structure-activity studies indicated that features required for Ca2+ channel blocking activity were distinct from those required for anticholinergic activity. In part

The association between alcohol, hepatic pathology and Dupuytren's disease.

We have looked at the incidence of Dupuytren's disease in alcoholics, those with non-alcoholic liver disease and a control population. Both alcoholic patients and those with non-alcohol related liver disease had a higher rate (28% and 22% respectively) than the controls (8%), but this did not quite reach statistical significance (p greater than 0.05). In addition we found no Dupuytren's disease in 50 Egyptian patients with bilharzia and no consistent biochemical abnormalities in 134 patients with significant Dupuytren's disease. We conclude that alcoholics probably do have a higher rate of Dup

Effect of alcohol consumption on the risk of Helicobacter pylori infection.

To investigate the effect of alcohol consumption on the risk of Helicobacter pylori infection, standardized questionnaires on drinking habits were used to interview 451 patients, whose H. pylori status was determined both by culture and serology. Reported alcohol consumption did not increase the risk of H. pylori infection (a 1.0 odds ratio, CI95 0.6-1.6). However, when the patients were divided into two age-groups, those under 35 years who reported to use alcohol seemed to have a slightly higher risk of H. pylori infection (a 3.3 odds ratio CI95 0.9-12.2) compared to those over 35 years (a 1.

Human alveolar macrophage antibacterial activity in the alcoholic lung.

Alcoholic individuals are predisposed to respiratory infections. However, mechanisms of perturbations leading to increased susceptibility to lung infections of individuals with alcoholic liver cirrhosis (ALC) are not fully understood. We studied the antibacterial activity and oxidant generation (before and after stimulation by phorbol myristate acetate or opsonized zymosan) of alveolar macrophages from 16 patients with ALC. Our results were compared with those obtained from 12 healthy control subjects, from 8 patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC), and from 8 alcoholic individuals witho

Alcoholism and depressive disorders in opioid addicts and their family members.

The co-occurrence of alcoholism and depression was examined in 201 opioid addicts and their 877 first-degree relatives using direct interviews and structured family history based on the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (SADS) Research Diagnostic Criteria (RDC) method. Familial alcoholism was more frequent in alcoholic than nonalcoholic proband addicts, and primary depression was more frequent in relatives of depressed than nondepressed addicts. An association was suggested between secondary, but not primary, depression and alcoholism in females.
