Visceral Leishmaniasis (VL) is an emerging zoonotic parasitic disease caused by Leishmania infantum in Mediterranean countries, with sand flies (Phlebotomus spp.) as vectors and dogs as the main domestic reservoir. The role of wild carnivores in the epidemiology of leishmaniasis is still controversial. In order to determine the prevalence of natural infection with L. infantum in wild carnivores from Spain, we analyzed 217 samples by PCR and western blotting and used restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) to compare the patterns present in wild carnivores with those of domestic dogs fr

Validation of new diagnostic assays requires the establishment of their performance characteristics such as diagnostic sensitivity and specificity, precision, repeatability, accuracy and reproducibility. These different stages of validation are described in the recent Standard Operating Procedure for OIE Validation and Certification of Diagnostic Assays. This report describes a reproducibility study of a new ELISA to titrate rabies antibodies in vaccinated wild and domestic carnivores. The study was modelled on the proficiency tests which are annually organised by the Community Reference Insti

Infection with Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis causes Johne's disease in cattle and is also implicated in cases of Crohn's disease in humans. Another closely related strain, M. avium subsp. avium, is a health problem for immunocompromised patients. To understand the molecular pathogenesis of M. avium subspecies, we analyzed the genome contents of isolates collected from humans and domesticated or wildlife animals. Comparative genomic hybridizations indicated distinct lineages for each subspecies where the closest genomic relatedness existed between M. avium subsp. paratuberculosis

The ring-tailed lemurs at Beza Mahafaly Special Reserve, Madagascar, exhibit a high frequency of severe wear and antemortem tooth loss. As part of a long-term study, we collected dental data on 83 living adult ring-tailed lemurs during 2003 and 2004. Among these individuals, 192 teeth were scored as absent. The most frequently missing tooth position is M1 (24%). As M1 is the first tooth to erupt, its high frequency of absence (primarily a result of wear) is not remarkable. However, the remaining pattern of tooth loss does not correlate with the sequence of eruption. We suggest that this patter

Human African trypanosomiasis (HAT), or sleeping sickness, describes not one but two discrete diseases: that caused by Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense and that caused by T. b. gambiense. The Gambian form is currently a major public health problem over vast areas of central and western Africa, while the zoonotic, Rhodesian form continues to present a serious health risk in eastern and southern Africa. The two parasites cause distinct clinical manifestations, and there are significant differences in the epidemiology of the diseases caused. We discuss the differences between the diseases caused by

Surveillance for evidence of West Nile virus (WNV) infection in taxonomically diverse vertebrates was conducted in the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico in 2003 and 2004. Sera from 144 horses on Cozumel Island, Quintana Roo State, 415 vertebrates (257 birds, 52 mammals, and 106 reptiles) belonging to 61 species from the Merida Zoo, Yucatan State, and 7 farmed crocodiles in Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche State were assayed for antibodies to flaviviruses. Ninety (62%) horses on Cozumel Island had epitope-blocking enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) antibodies to flaviviruses, of which 75 (52%) were

Wildlife are now recognised as an important source of emerging human pathogens, including parasites. This paper discusses the linkages between wildlife, people, zoonotic parasites and the ecosystems in which they co-exist, revisits definitions for 'emerging' and 're-emerging', and lists zoonotic parasites that can be acquired from wildlife including, for some, estimates of the associated global human health burdens. The paper also introduces the concepts of 'parasite webs' and 'parasite flow', provides a context for parasites, relative to other infectious agents, as causes of emerging human di

Difficulties and risks associated with restraining large nondomestic ungulates are limiting factors toward developing and applying assisted reproductive technologies, such as artificial insemination and embryo transfer. In this study on 10 female eland (Taurotragus oryx), we evaluated the use of behavioral training and handling handling in a hydraulic chute to perform transvaginal ultrasound-guided oocyte retrieval and other clinical procedures. Nine females were conditioned to associate specific sound cues with food treats. The interval from the audio cue until acceptance of handheld treats v

Panthers necropsied at the University of Florida ranged between 2 weeks and 14 years of age; there were 38 males and 17 females in the cohort. Main categories of causes of death included trauma inflicted from either vehicular collisions (43%) or territorial fights (16%). Specific endogenous diseases involved the respiratory system in 13%, the urinary system in 4%, and the central nervous system in 2%. Ostium secundum atrial septal defects (ASD) were diagnosed in 11% of the panthers necropsied. Seventeen (54%) of the 38 male panthers had either unilateral or bilateral cryptorchidism. Cause of d

The teeth of 63 skulls of brown bears (Ursus arctos spp.) that had lived in the Bernese bear pit between 1850 and 1995 were examined and radiographed for occlusion, loss of teeth, calcified dental plaque and calculus, attrition, and caries. Dental pathology and periodontal status were evaluated with respect to age and location in the dentition. Further techniques such as computed tomography, microhardness testing, histologic sectioning, and scanning electron microscopy were used in selected cases to verify the macroscopic and radiographic diagnoses. Fourteen skulls originating from free-rangin

Cross-reactivity between Babesia bovis and B. bigemina becomes a problem in discrimination of the two infections in endemic areas where the two species usually occur in association. With the aim of identifying candidate proteins for use as specific diagnostic tools, culture-derived components of three geographically different stocks of B. bovis (Lismore, Kwanyanga and Mexico) and one of B. bigemina (Mexico) were analyzed by immunoprecipitation using acrylamide gel electrophoresis. The approach taken was based on the analysis of 35S-methionine-labelled parasite antigens released into culture su

In earlier experiments, it had been demonstrated that at night melatonin concentration in the pineals of foxes Vulpes fulvus which were subjected to a prolonged selection for domestic behaviour, was higher than in undomesticated ones. A more detailed study of melatonin biosynthesis showed that concentration of melatonin precursor, namely serotonin, as well as the activity of N-acetyltransferase and hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase participating in melatonin synthesis, together with the content of dopamine and noradrenaline which regulate this process, are practically identical in the pineal g

In a series of three experiments, isolates of Pasteurella haemolytica biotype A, serotype 2, ribotype reference WSU-1, from healthy domestic sheep, were inoculated intratracheally into eight bighorn sheep (Ovis canadensis canadensis) and seven domestic sheep with doses of bacteria ranging from 5.3 x 10(8) to 8.6 x 10(11) colony forming units. Seven of eight inoculated bighorn sheep died from acute pneumonia within 48 hr of inoculation, whereas all seven domestic sheep inoculated with comparable or greater doses of bacteria remained healthy. One contact control bighorn sheep also died 6 days af

A total of 2,920 feral goats from pastoral areas of Western Australia were examined and the prevalence of caseous lymphadenitis was estimated to be 7.8 +/- 0.9% in goats presented for slaughter. Head, body and visceral lesions were present in 49.3%, 46.7% and 12.3% of affected goats, respectively. A comparison with previously reported data from sheep has been made and significant differences are discussed. Lung lesions were relatively uncommon in goats, whereas the distribution of carcase lesions was similar between the species. Multiple lesions appear to be less common in goats than in sheep.

Serologic surveillance of populations of snowshoe hares and other vertebrate species of north-central Alberta from 1961 to 1969, revealed activity of one bacterial and eight viral agents. The most prevalent agents infecting the snowshoe hare were California encephalitis and Silverwater viruses, while in other vertebrates California encephalitis and Western equine encephalomyelitis viruses were the most common. The role of the snowshoe hare in the natural history of the agents is considered as is the effect of the agent on the hare ten-year cycle of abundance.

Spatial pattern separation (SPS) is a memory process that enables the discrimination of similar spatial locations. This process is vulnerable to pathophysiological changes in the early stages of Alzheimer's disease (AD), but the translational potential of its testing remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of SPS testing as a translational cognitive marker for identifying early AD and enabling direct comparisons of cognitive outcomes in animals and humans. We used a validated SPS task to examine biomarker-defined participants with amnestic mild cognitive impairment due to A

Laryngeal ossification is a form of heterotopic ossification widely recognized in humans and seldom reported in companion animals, with selected case reports available in domestic and wild animals. Through a retrospective multi-institutional study, we collected laryngeal specimens from canine and feline patients submitted for autopsy. The relevant clinical information, including age, breed, sex, weight and final diagnosis, was recorded in each case. Histological examination assessed the percentage ossification in four standardized anatomical plane sections of the laryngeal cartilages and trach

Dirofilaria immitis and Acanthocheilonema reconditum are filarial parasites transmitted to canine hosts by arthropods. This study aimed to assess the prevalence, spatial distribution, and potential epidemiological factors associated with D. immitis and A. reconditum in dogs from non-endemic municipalities at different altitudes in the State of Rio de Janeiro using qPCR. Blood samples were collected from 378 dogs from Barra do Piraí, Paracambi, Petropolis, and Teresopolis. The overall prevalence rates of D. immitis and A. reconditum were 1.32 % (5/378) and 10.58 % (40/378), respectively. The fr

Johne's disease (JD), a chronic, infectious enteritis caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP), affects wild and domestic ruminants. There is no cure or effective prevention, and current vaccines have substantial limitations, leaving this disease widespread in all substantial dairy industries causing economic, and animal welfare implications. Mycobacteriophages (MPs) have been gaining interest in recent years and are proposed as a promising solution to curtailing MAP infection. Using a well-validated infection model, we have demonstrated the preventative potential of MPs to
