BACKGROUND: For patients undergoing primary total ankle replacement (TAR) with an equinus contracture, gastrocnemius recession may be performed to increase dorsiflexion. We examined whether gastrocnemius recession would significantly increase dorsiflexion even with a negative Silfverskiöld test.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of ankle braces on kicking accuracy, speed, and agility in competitive, nonelite soccer players. We hypothesized that the use of ankle bracing would significantly decrease performance in soccer-specific drills immediately after use but not after acclimation to the brace.
DESIGN: A prospective randomized controlled trial.

The late results of tarsometatarsal injuries in 33 patients have been reviewed. The average follow-up period was 15 years (range 11 to 20 years). Methods of treatment included cast immobilisation, and closed or open reduction with or without internal fixation. All patients noted diminishing symptoms after injury and all but six returned to their former occupation. Neither the initial fracture type nor the treatment had any apparent bearing on subsequent function; nor was there any correlation between radiographic assessment of the injury and the patient's symptoms.

76 cases of fresh lateral ligament injuries were operated on by primary suture. The preoperative diagnosis of severe lateral ligament sprain was based on clinical and radiological instability as seen by talar tilt and anterior drawer sign tests. A good diagnostic accuracy was achieved. A walking cast was worn for four weeks after the operation. A complete gait analysis was performed on six children with below-knee amputations to determine the kinematics and kinetics of amputee gait in children. A relatively new method of analysis--the inverse dynamic relationship--was used to determine the joint moments in the sagittal plane of the joints in the intact limb and the remaining portion of the amputated limb. The joint moments in the sagittal plane of the intact limb in the child amputee were found to be normal or below normal during level walking.
