The cells that are targeted by primate lentiviruses (HIV and simian immunodeficiency virus [SIV]) are of intense interest given the renewed effort to identify potential cures for HIV. These viruses have been reported to infect multiple cell lineages of hematopoietic origin, including all phenotypic and functional CD4 T cell subsets. The two most commonly reported cell types that become infected in vivo are memory CD4 T cells and tissue-resident macrophages. Though viral infection of CD4 T cells is routinely detected in both HIV-infected humans and SIV-infected Asian macaques, significant viral

Snowshoe hare virus (SSHV) is an arbovirus in the California serogroup known to circulate throughout Canada and northern latitudes of the United States. The clinical spectrum of SSHV infection ranges from asymptomatic or mild febrile illness to neuroinvasive disease; neuroinvasive disease occurs more often in children and young adults. We describe a cluster of confirmed and probable SSHV meningoencephalitis cases in 3 children from Whistler, British Columbia, Canada, in the summer of 2024. We highlight the shared epidemiology, clinical manifestations, serologic diagnostic methods, and outcomes

Zika virus (ZIKV) is an emerging arbovirus, and its infection is often asymptomatic or mild; however, it can lead to severe neurological disorders. Currently, there are no approved treatments or vaccines for ZIKV, highlighting the urgent need to explore potential therapeutic options. In this study, we evaluated the antiviral activity of a novel synthetic peptide (GA-peptide) against ZIKV in vitro. The GA-peptide exhibited dose-dependent inhibition of the virus, affecting multiple stages of the ZIKV replication cycle. It demonstrated virucidal activity and effectively protected Vero cells from

Renal cysts are common, particularly in individuals over 50, and are often asymptomatic. Spontaneous rupture of these cysts, especially without trauma, is a rare occurrence. We present the case of a 51-year-old female with a history of recurrent deep vein thrombosis, who initially presented with symptoms of abdominal pain, nausea, and dysuria, which were attributed to a urinary tract infection caused by Escherichia coli. Despite treatment with antibiotics, her condition worsened, and further imaging revealed a 4.5 cm renal cyst with features suggestive of rupture. After percutaneous aspiration

Toxoplasmosis, a parasitic infection caused by Toxoplasma gondii, is widely distributed worldwide. Although it generally remains asymptomatic in immunocompetent individuals, it can lead to severe complications in immunocompromised patients, particularly those infected with HIV. These individuals are at increased risk of developing encephalitis, primarily due to the reactivation of a latent infection. Genotyping of T. gondii in humans is an essential tool for studying the epidemiology of this parasitosis. Previous studies have identified three main archetypal (classical) lineages or genotypes:

Leptospirosis is a life-threatening zoonotic disease with a major public and animal health impact. Annually, approximately 1.03 million people are affected by leptospirosis, but our understanding of its impact on animals is limited. The epidemiology, pathogenesis, clinical presentation, diagnostic methods, and control measures for this disease differ significantly between humans and animals. This difference is due in part to the wide range of animal species that can be infected, the different infecting serovars present across species and geographic regions, and the existence of chronic asympto

The aim of the study was to describe the heterogeneity of the humoral immune response and pregnancy outcomes in infected women during an outbreak of toxoplasmosis. Forty-two pregnant women referred to the University Hospital of Santa Maria (HUSM), RS, Brazil in 2018 and 2019, were evaluated. Clinical symptoms were reported in 33.3% of the patients. The majority (64.3%) of symptomatic pregnant women had anti T. gondii IgM antibodies index >7.0. Considering asymptomatic pregnant women, 46.4% presented antibodies IgM index below 3.0. Anti T. gondii IgG low avidity antibodies are present in 23.5%

Human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) is a replication-competent human retrovirus associated with two distinct types of diseases: a malignancy of mature CD4+ T cells called adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma (ATL) and a chronic inflammatory central nervous system disease HTLV-1-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). It was the first human retrovirus ever associated with a human cancer. Although most HTLV-1-infected individuals remain asymptomatic for life, a subpopulation develops ATL or HAM/TSP. Although the factors that cause these different manifestations of HTLV-1

We present a misdiagnosed case of disseminated gonococcal infection (DGI) in a patient with pre-existing systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), complaining of sudden onset polyarthralgia and tenosynovitis. Neisseria gonorrhoeae is a common sexually transmitted disease. It can present in young adults as cervicitis and urethritis but is often asymptomatic. In rare instances, gonorrhea can advance to DGI with symptoms such as tenosynovitis, dermatitis, and polyarthralgias, seen most commonly in the knees, ankles, elbows, fingers, and toes. Once suspected, DGI is definitively diagnosed with blood cul

Leptospirosis is an acute, febrile, systemic, and zoonotic infectious disease characterized by widespread vasculitis caused by Leptospira interrogans from the leptospira family. It can be in the form of asymptomatic infection; it can also progress with severe symptomatic forms characterized by multiorgan involvement such as aseptic meningitis as well as liver and kidney failure. Leptospirosis is transmitted to humans through water, soil, and food contaminated with the urine of infected mice or other mammals. COVID-19 is a newly detected coronavirus that causes pneumonia. The disease has led to

Direct Provision in Ireland provides basic needs of food and shelter to asylum seekers while their refugee status is processed. There are a number of issues associated with living conditions in these centres including overcrowding, nutrition and play facilities (1,2). This article outlines the protocol of contact tracing and management of latent tuberculosis infection in the paediatric setting after a confirmed adult case of tuberculosis within a Direct Provision centre in Ireland. This is a retrospective case series of 82 children living in the centre. Twenty-two children were deemed at risk

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a novel coronavirus responsible for a pandemic that emerged in December 2019. Heterogeneous clinical forms are described from asymptomatic to severe hypoxaemic acute respiratory syndrome with multisystem organ failure. The impact of this coronavirus disease 2019 on the endocrine glands remains unknown. However, the results of previous studies on viruses from the same family allow us to write proposals for patients followed for chronic endocrine diseases. Currently, if these subjects are infected with SARS-CoV-2, they must not stop

One hundred years after the 1918 influenza pandemic, we now face another pandemic with the severe acute respiratory syndrome-novel coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2). There is considerable variability in the incidence of infection and severe disease following exposure to SARS-CoV-2. Data from China and the United States suggest a low prevalence of neonates, infants, and children, with those affected not suffering from severe disease. In this article, we speculate different theories why this novel agent is sparing neonates, infants, and young children. The low severity of SARS-CoV-2 infection in this p

Filariases are diseases caused by arthropod-borne filaria nematodes. The related pathologies depend on the location of the infective larvae when their migration, the asymptomatic and least studied phase of the disease, comes to an end. To determine factors assisting in filariae dissemination, we image Litomosoides sigmodontis infective larvae during their escape from the skin. Burrowing through the dermis filariae exclusively enter pre-collecting lymphatics by mechanical disruption of their wall. Once inside collectors, their rapid and unidirectional movement towards the lymph node is supporte

BACKGROUND: Cytomegalovirus (CMV) is the main cause of congenital viral infections. Current guidelines do not include any recommendation about antenatal treatment. Most studies that evaluate the efficacy of valaciclovir aim to treat infected symptomatic fetus but the benefit of anti-CMV therapy remains unclear.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of cytomegalovirus seroconversion during the second trimester of pregnancy. Early treatment with valaciclovir was introduced, associated with a close monitoring of maternal CMV viremia. The virus was no longer detected in maternal blood soon after

In immunocompetent individuals, EBV establishes in B cells an asymptomatic lifelong latent infection controlled by the immune system. Chemokine receptors regulate immune system function. CCR1 and CCR2 share protein sequence similarity and exert responses to multiple chemokines. The role of these receptors in B cells is largely unknown. We show that the mRNA and functional protein expression of CCR1 and CCR2 is induced in ex vivo B cells upon EBV infection and in established lymphoblastoid cell lines (LCLs). The CCR1 and CCR2B ORF transcripts were determined in LCLs. In contrast, in both the EB

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne flavivirus that is the focus of an ongoing pandemic. ZIKV is notable for its severe neurologic sequelae in babies born to infected mothers. High rates of subclinical infection, as evidenced by the finding of ZIKV RNA in asymptomatic donors, raise concerns of risk to the blood supply. To date, a total of four suspected cases of transfusion-transmitted ZIKV have been reported (all in Brazil), none of which were associated with clinical infection in the transfusion recipients. In 2016, the US Food and Drug Administration issued a guidance mandating national b

Teratomas of anterior mediastinum are rare. They are often slow growing, asymptomatic, and detected incidentally on chest imaging. Mycobacterium abscessus (M. abscessus) is an acid-fast bacillus that is classified as a pathogenic "rapid growing" non-tuberculous mycobacteria. It is an uncommon cause of human pathology, which may cause skin and soft tissue infection after skin injury following inoculation, minor trauma, and surgery. Here, we present an unusual case of benign cystic teratoma mimicking recurrent pleural effusion, which was subsequently complicated by M. abscessus infection followi

A 41-year-old man visited our dermatology clinic because an eruption, which was resistant to steroid ointment treatment, had appeared on his right forearm. An oval, soybean-sized erythematous infiltrated lesion with scales and crusts was located in the central part of the extensor surface of the right forearm and showed partial erosion with attached yellow crusts. The lesion had an impetigo-like appearance. Fungal elements were confirmed from the scales by KOH examination and the fungus was identified as Trichophyton tonsurans by fungal culture and molecular method. Clinical features of T. ton

The incidence of HIV-related opportunistic infections (OIs) has declined in the United States with the increasing use of effective antiretroviral therapy for the treatment of HIV infection. However, the absolute number of patients with OIs remains high and there continues to be considerable associated mortality. OI guidelines from the National Institutes of Health, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Infectious Diseases Society of America continue to be updated on a regular basis, several times per year, as optimal strategies for prevention and therapy evolve. Recommendations that
