Heart-rot is not a disease: reframing wood decay in living trees.

When fungi are seen fruiting on tree trunks, branches and twigs, they are often automatically thought to be causing disease. Likewise, the hollowing of dead woody tissue in the centre of trunks is often instantly thought of as harmful. Yet there is a wide diversity of tree-fungus interactions, and the majority of those involving wood decay fungi do not have negative consequences for the tree. This biologically inaccurate framing of wood decay fungi in general, and heart-rot in particular, has major consequences for research priorities, forest management, and public perceptions of fungi-tree in

Dissociable roles of prefrontal plasticity in decision-making strategy and execution of habitual behavior.

Habits are essential for sustaining adaptive behaviors but can also lead to maladaptive behaviors such as compulsive and addictive disorders. They emerge through a shift in decision-making from motivation-driven strategy to an automatic one. During this, the level of habit execution, such as frequency and duration, is superficially maintained despite a decline in motivational drive, raising the question of how the amount of execution is maintained even when decision-making strategies undergo substantial changes. By developing a unique paradigm capable of inducing habit formation within a defin

Construction of patient trajectories to model clinical trial outcomes: application to myasthenia gravis.

INTRODUCTION: Accurate prediction of patient outcomes in clinical trials is crucial for the timely assessment of treatment efficacy. This study proposes a novel approach to predict patient response using longitudinal clinical data. METHODS: We construct temporal trajectories from longitudinal data and extrapolate these trajectories to forecast individual patient outcomes. Additionally, we assess when new patients align with established response patterns. The approach is evaluated using data from the MGTX trial involving patients with myasthenia gravis. RESULTS: Our analysis demonstrates the

Use of a breakaway vascular access device to preserve peripherally inserted central catheter integrity in a neonate.

Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICCs) in neonatal and paediatric patients are susceptible to unintentional dislodgement during routine care-giving activities, which may result in catheter complications such as tip migration or complete loss of vascular access. This case study describes the use of a breakaway device on a 27-day-old female infant's PICC line during antibiotic therapy for bacterial meningitis. Over a 26-day dwell period, three device separation events occurred during routine care-giving activities. In each instance, the device functioned as intended, automatically stopp

WEAKLY SUPERVISED SEGMENTATION AND CLASSIFICATION OF ALPHA-SYNUCLEIN AGGREGATES IN BRIGHTFIELD MIDBRAIN IMAGES.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative disorder associated with the accumulation of misfolded alpha-synuclein aggregates, forming Lewy bodies and neuritic shape used for pathology diagnostics. Automatic analysis of immunohistochemistry histopathological images with Deep Learning provides a promising tool for better understanding the spatial organization of these aggregates. In this study, we develop an automated image processing pipeline to segment and classify these aggregates in whole-slide images (WSIs) of midbrain tissue from PD and incidental Lewy Body Disease (iLBD) cases based

Dual-Branch Multi-Task Regressor and Transformer Model for Endoscopic Image Classification.

Endoscopy plays a crucial role in the early diagnosis of colon cancer. The manual processing of images by skilled endoscopists is time-consuming, making automatic image classification highly valuable. We propose a novel multi-label classification method that integrates complementary learning from both local and global approaches. The model comprises a Swin Transformer branch for global feature extraction and a modified VGG16-based CNN branch for local feature analysis. The learning capability of the CNN branch is enhanced by concatenating a saliency map and the prediction of a texture feature

Efficient cell-wide mapping of mitochondria in electron microscopic volumes using webKnossos.

Recent technical advances in volume electron microscopy (vEM) and artificial-intelligence-assisted image processing have facilitated high-throughput quantifications of cellular structures, such as mitochondria, that are ubiquitous and morphologically diversified. A still often-overlooked computational challenge is to assign a cell identity to numerous mitochondrial instances, for which both mitochondrial and cell membrane contouring used to be required. Here, we present a vEM reconstruction procedure (called mito-SegEM) that utilizes virtual-path-based annotation to assign automatically segmen

Are we ready for automated deep brain stimulation programming?

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) requires individualized programming of stimulation parameters, a time-consuming process performed manually by clinicians with specialized training. This process limits DBS accessibility, delays treatment, and constrains the potential for next-generation technology to improve patient outcomes. This review describes technological advancements that could automate DBS programming, focusing on Parkinson's disease biomarkers that can provide objective outcome measurement and algorithms that can quickly and automatically identify optimal DBS settings. We first define key

Semiology of seizures with temporo-polar or "medio-lateral" temporal origin: A systematic review.

A systematic review using PRISMA criteria was used to review the literature regarding the specific semiology of seizure arising (a) from the temporal pole or (b) from both medial and lateral temporal cortex. Evidence was analyzed with regard to information provided by intracranial EEG recordings and surgical outcomes, and an estimation of validity of reported signs and symptoms was performed. Semiology of seizures originating from the temporal pole was mostly related to diverse patterns of ictal spread rather than to the localization of seizure origin and comprised a wide variety of early sign

Interactive 3D segmentation for primary gross tumor volume in oropharyngeal cancer.

Radiotherapy is the main treatment modality of oropharyngeal cancer (OPC), in which an accurate segmentation of primary gross tumor volume (GTVt) is essential but also challenging due to significant interobserver variability and the time consumed in manual tumor delineation. For such a challenge an interactive deep learning (DL) based approach offers the advantage of automatic high-performance segmentation with the flexibility for user correction when necessary. In this study, we investigate an interactive DL for GTVt segmentation in OPC by introducing a novel two-stage Interactive Click Refin

Generalized target behavior reductions and maintenance of effects following an augmented competing stimulus assessment sequence.

Competing stimulus assessments are one technology that aids in the development of treatment for automatically reinforced behavior. However, competing stimulus assessments do not always yield robust results. Stereotypic behaviors of different subtypes may require procedural modifications to successfully identify competing stimuli. The current investigation included functional analyses to determine whether participant responding aligned with proposed subtypes for such behaviors. Next, we implemented augmented competing-stimulus-assessment (A-CSA) procedures across target and generalization stimu

Diving back two hundred million years: yawn contagion in fish.

Yawning is a widespread and automatic behavior in vertebrates. Yawn contagion, responding with a yawn to others' yawns, helps synchronize motor activities, particularly in social animals, promoting coordination within groups. While primarily observed in social, endothermic species, yawn contagion remains unconfirmed in ectotherms. We discovered yawn contagion in zebrafish (Danio rerio). Using a deep learning model to distinguish yawning from breathing, we found that fish not only yawn but also "catch" yawns from others. The presence of yawn contagion in fish raises important evolutionary quest

A Smart Computational Tool for Personalized Coronary Blood Flow Settings During Normothermic Ex Situ Heart Perfusion.

Myocardial edema significantly develops during current subnormothermic ex situ heart perfusion (ESHP) procedures, resulting in myocardial function decline during prolonged perfusion. A relatively high coronary blood flow (CBF) during ESHP is thought to be responsible for this high degree of myocardial edema formation. In this study, we present a novel tool to calculate CBF based on individual donor (sex and body weight) and perfusate (hemoglobin concentration, oxygen saturation, partial pressure of oxygen [PO 2 ]) characteristics. The tool continuously evaluates the balance between myocardial
