Quality of life, and quality of sleep in the working population with chronic low back pain: A 2-year follow-up.

Chronic low back pain is a frequent medical condition, and a major problem especially among the working population, because it influences their working ability. The research aimed to evaluate the influence of pain on quality of life (QoL), and quality of sleep (QoS) in patients suffering from chronic low back pain, during 2 years of follow-up. The study included 128 patients. Patients were tested on 4 occasions (on admission, after 6, 12, and 24 months from initial testing). Based on age, they were divided into 3 groups: I group 18 to 30 years; II group 30 to 50 years; III group 50 to 65 years

Exploring the clinical utility of postural outcome tools for back and neck pain clinical outcomes: a systematic scoping review.

The role of posture in spinal pain is unclear which might be linked to characteristics of postural outcome measures. This systematic scoping review mapped the clinical utility of postural outcome tools for spinal pain. Following Joanna Briggs Institute framework, twelve bibliographic databases were searched until 8 th August 2023. Article selection, characterisation/mapping and synthesis using qualitative content analysis were performed by two independent reviewers. Clinical utility was defined by psychometric and clinimetric criteria including construct validity, predictive validity, intra an

Design and validation of a referral algorithm for inflammatory arthritis and low back pain: identifying gaps in primary care practices.

OBJECTIVES: Timely referral of patients with inflammatory arthritis (IA) and inflammatory low back pain to rheumatology is crucial. This study designed and validated a referral algorithm for non-rheumatologists in Arab countries and identified gaps in correct referrals and referral parameters. METHODS: Sixteen rheumatologists adopted referral algorithms, based on validation studies and clinical expertise, and summarized them in educational material (EM), including a PDF and video module. Five illustrative clinical vignettes were electronically sent to non-rheumatologists, to make referral dec

Two-years clinical course of pain intensity and symptom satisfaction for latent classes in older adults with back pain.

BACKGROUND: Back pain is known to increase with age. However, most studies are conducted in the younger adult population, leaving the older adults understudied. The clinical course and associated prognostic factors for back pain remain poorly investigated in this population. Hence, this study aimed to investigate the clinical course of back pain and symptom satisfaction across groups derived from a latent class analysis in older adults: the Positive, the Fearful, the Distressed, and the Hopeful, over a 2-year period. METHODS: Participants were ≥ 55 years of age, seeking primary care due to an

Measurement properties of six expectation scales for chronic low back pain in Brazilian Portuguese: Not all expectations are the same.

BACKGROUND: The literature points out that expectations can shape treatment outcomes regarding pain and disability in patients with chronic low back pain (CLBP). There are several instruments available to assess pain-related expectations, and most studies haven't reported the measurement properties of such scales. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to adapt and examine the measurement properties of the Stanford Expectations of Treatment Scale (SETS), the Treatment Expectations in Chronic Pain Scale (TEC), and four single-item expectations scales in Brazilian Portuguese in CLBP. METHODS: A total of

State-of-the-Art Personalized Therapy Approaches for Chronic Non-Specific Low Back Pain: Understanding the Mechanisms and Drivers.

Chronic non-specific low back pain (CNSLBP) is a debilitating condition that affects millions of people worldwide, significantly impacting quality of life and imposing a substantial socioeconomic burden. Traditional treatment approaches often rely on a one-size-fits-all strategy, failing to account for individual variations in pathophysiological mechanisms, drivers, and the principles of personalized medicine. Furthermore, an overemphasis on biomechanical findings from imaging may lead to ineffective interventions and unnecessary surgical procedures, obscuring other important factors that cont

Serum Interleukin-8 Levels and Their Association with Anxiety and Functional Disability in Military Personnel with Chronic Low Back Pain.

Background/Objectives: Chronic low back pain (LBP) remains a leading cause of disability and healthcare utilization globally, with complex, multifactorial pathophysiology. Despite advances in imaging, diagnosis often remains challenging due to poor correlation between structural findings and clinical symptoms. Recent evidence suggests inflammatory mechanisms may underlie persistent pain. This study investigated whether systemic inflammatory cytokines are altered in military personnel with chronic LBP and examined their relationships with clinical manifestations, psychological factors, and radi

Qigong Versus Usual Exercise in the Treatment of Chronic Nonspecific Low Back Pain as an Add-On to a Standardized Physiotherapy Program.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic nonspecific low back pain (CNSLBP) is a leading cause of disability worldwide. Exercise-based interventions, particularly strengthening exercises, are widely used in rehabilitation. However, mind-body approaches such as Qigong, which integrate movement, breath control, and mindfulness, may offer additional psychological benefits. Despite evidence supporting Qigong in pain management, its effectiveness as an adjunct to physiotherapy remains unclear. This study compared the effects of Qigong versus strengthening exercises, integrated into a standardized physiotherapy progra

Randomized Trial of Self-Selected Music Intervention on Pain and Anxiety in Emergency Department Patients with Musculoskeletal Back Pain.

INTRODUCTION: Acute musculoskeletal back pain is a frequent cause of emergency department (ED) visits, often with suboptimal relief from standard treatments. Recent evidence suggests listening to music may modulate pain and anxiety. In this pilot randomized controlled trial, we evaluated the impact of a brief session of patient-selected music vs noise cancellation on pain severity and anxiety in patients presenting to the ED with back pain. METHODS: Patients with acute back pain completed a baseline survey to assess demographics, medication information, and psychosocial factors. The ED patien

Looking back to move forward: 50 years of epidemiology of lymphohaematopoietic malignancies for prevention, and healthcare planning in Sardinia, Italy.

In previous reports, we showed the diversity in the epidemiological features of the most prevalent lymphohaematopoietic malignancies (LHM) in Sardinia, Italy. In this paper, we reviewed those findings, aiming to: 1) explore the geographic correlation between the various LHM; 2) estimate the standardised incidence rates up to 2017; 3) compare our estimates with nationwide trends; 4) project such trends up to 2030; and 5) predict the expected LHM cases in the upcoming years by health district to assess the adequacy of the existing Haematology and Healthcare services. We observed a high probabili
