The Montpellier snake (Malpolon monspessulanus) is an opisthoglyphous snake rarely implicated in human envenomation because the anatomy of its venom apparatus is generally unsuitable for venom delivery to large mammals. The authors report one case of human envenomation by the Montpellier snake in Southern France. Envenomation occurred under exceptional circumstances (finger of patient inserted deeply into the mouth of the reptile). The clinical picture was dominated by neurological symptoms (ptosis, oculomotor paralysis). The patient recovered in 6 days with symptomatic treatment.

The clinical, epidemiological, and therapeutic aspects of 15 patients with Mediterranean spotted fever (MSF), admitted to the Internal Medicine Department of the General Hospital of Sitia (southeastern Crete, Greece) between December 2000 and July 2003, were studied. BACKGROUND: Borreliosis is the most common vector transmitted disease in childhood. Although the disease manifests with an erythema migrans in 80 % of the patients, multilocular skin manifestations are only observed in 2-18 % of these. Differential diagnoses of erythema migrans include erysipelas, persistent insect bite reaction, and fixed drug eruption, in particular when the clinical history does not reveal a tick bite.
