The neural basis of constraint-induced movement therapy.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This review describes our current understanding of the changes in brain function and structure that occur in response to an intensive form of motor rehabilitation, constraint-induced movement therapy (CIMT), that has been shown to be efficacious in promoting motor function of the paretic upper limb of stroke patients. RECENT FINDINGS: Studies using transcranial magnetic stimulation have demonstrated consistently an increase in the size of the representation of paretic hand muscles in the ipsilesional motor cortex after CIMT. This motor map expansion occurs in response to CI

Neural Oscillations Track Subjective and Pupillary Arousal During Naturalistic Movie Viewing.

Movies evoke dynamic emotional experiences that fluctuate moment-to-moment. While fMRI has mapped these fluctuations, the real-time continuous oscillatory dynamics underlying naturalistic viewing remain less understood. In this study, 25 adults watched an emotionally rich short film while EEG, continuous subjective arousal annotations and pupil diameter were recorded. Inter-subject correlation (ISC) analyses revealed robust synchronization in behavioural and pupillary arousal across the cohort. Leveraging these shared, group-level arousal trajectories to probe individual-level cortical process

Image complexity-based fMRI-BOLD visual network categorization across visual datasets using topological descriptors and deep-hybrid learning.

This study proposes a new approach that investigates differences in topological characteristics of visual networks, which are constructed using fMRI BOLD time-series corresponding to visual datasets of COCO, ImageNet, and SUN. A publicly available BOLD5000 dataset is utilized that contains fMRI scans while viewing 5254 images of diverse complexities. The objective of this study is to examine how network topology differs in response to distinct visual stimuli from these visual datasets. To achieve this, 0- and 1-dimensional persistence diagrams are computed for each visual network representing

Seeking cognitive and neural specificity in occipitotemporal cortex.

Studies in our field have often operated under an implicit assumption that the purpose of visual processing is categorization. I argue that our reliance on univariate category-selectivity has diverted attention from behaviorally critical dimensions, such as individuation, which are best captured in multivariate patterns. Category-focused localizers suppress within-category variability, masking signals at the level of individuals, exemplars, and items. By shifting the emphasis from univariate activation to multivariate discriminability, we can better align neural measures with the cognitive dem

The superior colliculus motor region does not respond to finger tapping movements in humans.

Electrophysiological studies in macaques and functional neuroimaging in humans revealed a motor region in the superior colliculus (SC) for upper limb reaching movements. Connectivity studies in macaques reported direct connections between this SC motor region and cortical premotor arm, hand, and finger regions. These findings motivated us to investigate if the human SC is also involved in sequential finger tapping movements. We analyzed fMRI task data of 130 subjects executing finger tapping from the Human Connectome Project. While we found strong signals in the SC for visual cues, we found no

Encoding of Visual Objects in the Human Medial Temporal Lobe.

The human medial temporal lobe (MTL) plays a crucial role in recognizing visual objects, a key cognitive function that relies on the formation of semantic representations. Nonetheless, it remains unknown how visual information of general objects is translated into semantic representations in the MTL. Furthermore, the debate about whether the human MTL is involved in perception has endured for a long time. To address these questions, we investigated three distinct models of neural object coding-semantic coding, axis-based feature coding, and region-based feature coding-in each subregion of the

Online transcranial magnetic stimulation reveals dynamic interactions between language control and processing in bilingual language production.

Language production in bilinguals relies on the collaborative interaction between two neural systems: the language control system (e.g. the right inferior frontal gyrus) and the language processing system (e.g. the left superior temporal gyrus). However, the causal mapping between these brain systems and their cognitive functions, as well as the temporal dynamics between these two systems during bilingual language production, remain unclear. To investigate this, our study applied online transcranial magnetic stimulation to the right inferior frontal gyrus and left superior temporal gyrus in Ch

Frontal engagement in perceptual integration under low subjective visibility.

We investigated how spatiotemporal neural dynamics underlying perceptual integration changed with the degree of conscious access to a set of backward-masked pacman-shaped inducers that generated the percept of an illusory triangle. We kept the stimulus parameters at a fixed near-threshold level throughout the experiment and recorded electroencephalography from participants who reported the orientation and subjective visibility of the illusory triangle on each trial. Our multivariate pattern analysis revealed that posterior and central areas initially used dynamic neural code and later switched

Mild Deficits in Fear Learning: Evidence from Humans and Mice with Cerebellar Cortical Degeneration.

Functional brain imaging studies in humans suggest involvement of the cerebellum in fear conditioning but do not allow conclusions about the functional significance. The main aim of the present study was to examine whether patients with cerebellar degeneration show impaired fear conditioning and whether this is accompanied by alterations in cerebellar cortical activations. To this end, a 2 d differential fear conditioning study was conducted in 20 cerebellar patients and 21 control subjects using a 7 tesla (7 T) MRI system. Fear acquisition and extinction training were performed on day 1, foll

A task-general connectivity model reveals variation in convergence of cortical inputs to functional regions of the cerebellum.

While resting-state fMRI studies have provided a broad picture of the connectivity between human neocortex and cerebellum, the degree of convergence of cortical inputs onto cerebellar circuits remains unknown. Does each cerebellar region receive input from a single cortical area or convergent inputs from multiple cortical areas? Here, we use task-based fMRI data to build a range of cortico-cerebellar connectivity models, each allowing for a different degree of convergence. We compared these models by their ability to predict cerebellar activity patterns for novel Task Sets. Models that allow s

Cortico-Cerebellar neurodynamics during social interaction in Autism Spectrum Disorders.

BACKGROUND: Exploring neural network dynamics during social interaction could help to identify biomarkers of Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). A cerebellar involvement in autism has long been suspected and recent methodological advances now enable studying cerebellar functioning in a naturalistic setting. Here, we investigated the electrophysiological activity of the cerebro-cerebellar network during real-time social interaction in ASD. We focused our analysis on theta oscillations (3-8 Hz), which have been associated with large-scale coordination of distant brain areas and might contribute to

Cerebellar Functional Dysconnectivity in Drug-Naïve Patients With First-Episode Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Cerebellar functional dysconnectivity has long been implicated in schizophrenia. However, the detailed dysconnectivity pattern and its underlying biological mechanisms have not been well-charted. This study aimed to conduct an in-depth characterization of cerebellar dysconnectivity maps in early schizophrenia. STUDY DESIGN: Resting-state fMRI data were processed from 196 drug-naïve patients with first-episode schizophrenia and 167 demographically matched healthy controls. The cerebellum was parcellated into nine functional systems based on a state-of-the-art atlas, and seed-based

The impact of temporal lobe epilepsy surgery on picture naming and its relationship to network metric change.

BACKGROUND: Anterior temporal lobe resection (ATLR) is a successful treatment for medically-refractory temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). In the language-dominant hemisphere, 30%- 50% of individuals experience a naming decline which can impact upon daily life. Measures of structural networks are associated with language performance pre-operatively. It is unclear if analysis of network measures may predict post-operative decline. METHODS: White matter fibre tractography was performed on preoperative diffusion MRI of 44 left lateralised and left resection individuals with TLE to reconstruct the preo

Cognitive tasks affect the relationship between representational pattern similarity and subsequent item memory in the hippocampus.

Episodic memories are records of personally experienced events, coded neurally via the hippocampus and surrounding medial temporal lobe cortex. Information about the neural signal corresponding to a memory representation can be measured in fMRI data when the pattern across voxels is examined. Prior studies have found that similarity in the voxel patterns across repetition of a to-be-remembered stimulus predicts later memory retrieval, but the results are inconsistent across studies. The current study investigates the possibility that cognitive goals (defined here via the task instructions give

Two distinct networks containing position-tolerant representations of actions in the human brain.

Humans can recognize others' actions in the social environment. This action recognition ability is rarely hindered by the movement of people in the environment. The neural basis of this position tolerance for observed actions is not fully understood. Here, we aimed to identify brain regions capable of generalizing representations of actions across different positions and investigate the representational content of these regions. In a functional magnetic resonance imaging experiment, participants viewed point-light displays of different human actions. Stimuli were presented in either the upper

Categorical encoding of moving colors during location tracking.

Categorical perception (CP) describes our tendency to perceive the visual world in a categorical manner, suggesting that high-level cognition may affect perception. While most studies are conducted in static visual scenes, Sun and colleagues found CP effects of color in multiple object tracking (MOT). This study used functional magnetic resonance imaging to investigate the neural mechanism behind the categorical effects of color in MOT. Categorical effects were associated with activities in a broad range of brain regions, including both the ventral (V4, middle temporal gyrus) and dorsal pathwa

Causal evidence for a coordinated temporal interplay within the language network.

Recent neurobiological models on language suggest that auditory sentence comprehension is supported by a coordinated temporal interplay within a left-dominant brain network, including the posterior inferior frontal gyrus (pIFG), posterior superior temporal gyrus and sulcus (pSTG/STS), and angular gyrus (AG). Here, we probed the timing and causal relevance of the interplay between these regions by means of concurrent transcranial magnetic stimulation and electroencephalography (TMS-EEG). Our TMS-EEG experiments reveal region- and time-specific causal evidence for a bidirectional information flo

Mechanisms of imbalanced frontostriatal functional connectivity in obsessive-compulsive disorder.

The diagnosis of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has been linked with changes in frontostriatal resting-state connectivity. However, replication of prior findings is lacking, and the mechanistic understanding of these effects is incomplete. To confirm and advance knowledge on changes in frontostriatal functional connectivity in OCD, participants with OCD and matched healthy controls underwent resting-state functional, structural and diffusion neuroimaging. Functional connectivity changes in frontostriatal systems were here replicated in individuals with OCD (n = 52) compared with controls
